Paul Krugman-

Did China Just Bribe Trump to Undermine National Security?

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/17/opin ... tw-nytimes
Don’t say that this suggestion is ridiculous: Given everything we know about Donald Trump, it’s well within the bounds of possibility, even plausibility.

Don’t say there’s no proof: We’re not talking about a court of law, where the accused are presumed innocent until proved guilty. Where the behavior of high officials is concerned, the standard is very nearly the opposite: They’re supposed to avoid situations in which there is even a hint that their actions might be motivated by personal gain.

Oh, and don’t say that it doesn’t matter one way or the other, because the Republicans who control Congress won’t do anything about it. That in itself is a key part of the story: An entire political party — a party that has historically wrapped itself in the flag and questioned the patriotism of its opponents — has become entirely complaisant in the possibility of raw corruption, even if it involves payoffs from hostile foreign powers.

:snippity:

It’s possible that Trump was just trying to offer an olive branch amid what looks like a possible trade war. But why choose such a flagrant example of Chinese misbehavior? Which was why many eyes turned to Indonesia, where a Chinese state-owned company just announced a big investment in a project in which the Trump Organization has a substantial stake.

The Hill: Trump urged postmaster general to double rates on Amazon: report:
President Trump has reportedly urged the U.S. postmaster general to double shipping rates for Amazon.com and other companies amid months of his continued criticism that the online retailer is costing the Postal Service "billions" of dollars in revenue.

Trump has personally met with Postmaster General Megan Brennan multiple times since 2017 to petition her for a hike on rates for Amazon and other firms that ship packages, The Washington Post reported Friday, citing officials familiar with the conversations.

The president's demands came despite counsel from close advisers and top Postal Service employees that Amazon, the largest shipper of packages through USPS, actually helps keep it afloat financially.

According to the Post, Brennan explained to Trump in their conversations that the Postal Service is bound by its contracts with retail companies, noting that to change them would require a review by the independent regulatory agency that oversees the USPS.

Jack Brown, the body language guy, says that not only does Trump lack empathy, but he also makes many policy decisions based on his own dislikes and likes.

For example, his immigration summit in CA this week. All that animal crap is his own personal view of non-white immigrant. His body language showed his disgust every time he mentioned them. This is most definitely not the way it should be.

I've actually tried to stay in the Shack Up Inn! It was already full, so we just listened to music in their bar instead (I believe its a restored cotton gin) and stayed in a motel in Clarksdale. I drove a small portion of the blues highway with a friend, and had a wonderful time. Coming from a flat state (Indiana) I didn't think I would find Mississippi very pretty, but I loved the land and the strange sunlight. You know those filters they always use in movies when they show historical scenes set in Mississippi? I swear the light was just like that. But I guess my point is that a hotel in rural Mississippi isn't going to feed Trump's ego, which is based on his belief his properties are "high-class," "luxurious" etc.
Sounds like you were just stopping by.

Holy crap.

Three months before the 2016 election, a group gathered at Trump Tower to meet with Don Jr. to offer help to win:

The group:
• Israeli specialist in social media manipulation
• George Nader, an emissary for Arab princes
• Blackwater founder Erik Prince

John Feeley, the former U.S. ambassador to Panama, said that in his first meeting with Trump, in June 2017, the president asked him: “So tell me—what do we get from Panama? What’s in it for us?”
John Feeley, the Ambassador to Panama and a former Marine helicopter pilot, is not averse to strong language, but he was nevertheless startled by his first encounter with President Donald Trump. Summoned to deliver a briefing in June, 2017, he was outside the Oval Office when he overheard Trump concluding a heated conversation, “Fuck him! Tell him to sue the government.” Feeley was escorted in, and saw that Mike Pence, John Kelly, and several other officials were in the room. As he took a seat, Trump asked, “So tell me—what do we get from Panama? What’s in it for us?” Feeley presented a litany of benefits: help with counter-narcotics work and migration control, commercial efforts linked to the Panama Canal, a close relationship with the current President, Juan Carlos Varela. When he finished, Trump chuckled and said, “Who knew?” He then turned the conversation to the Trump International Hotel and Tower, in Panama City. “How about the hotel?” he said. “We still have the tallest building on the skyline down there?”
Wonder what that meeting was about? Did Pence cover his ears at the potty mouth?

Ah yes, the hotel. I believe that's the hotel Patagonia Girl informed us Panama City taxi drivers call The Russian Laundromat.

I also believe that's the building they took a crow-bar to Trump's name recently. Just thinking of that makes me smile, and I really needed a smile. This whole Trump debacle has bummed me for the past week or so.

I tried to watch Trump's announcement today but the fluorescent white mask around his eyes was especially distracting. He can't see that when he watches himself on tv?

(edited to remove the second "today." Someday I'll proofread, sigh.)
