Michele Bachmann Legal Expenses Soar In Face Of Investigations Legal expenses for Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) soared in the month after congressional ethics and criminal investigations were opened into allegations that the four-term congresswoman had misused funds from her 2012 presidential campaign.Since the beginning of 2013, Bachmann has spent more than $200,000 on legal expenses, using money from her congressional campaign, presidential campaign and leadership PAC. This is far above the average for legal costs incurred by a House campaign at this point in the election cycle. The vast majority of that money -- $190,054 -- was spent after it was announced in May that the Department of Justice had opened an investigation into her failed presidential bid. The Office of Congressional Ethics had previously announced an investigation into Bachmann's campaign. <...snip...>

Huffington Post is a waste of electrons bandwidth.

I suppose electrons flow, the number depending on the impedance. Bandwidth is a more commonly used term when we talk about computer waste.

Arianna Huffington is a [/break1]com/5064930/ariannas-mandatory-cult-meetings]drooling cultist.

I remember when Arianna was strictly into nutjob news. Huffington sits on the fence and leans into whatever direction where the advertisement dollars are most lucrative on a particular week.

You think she might be interested in getting back together with Michael? There's money there. And her politics seem to have moved in his direction, too.

I wonder why AP thinks this is breaking news. MinnPost had an article about it last week in which her lawyer acknowledged the investigation.

[link]Bachmann investigation goes to House Ethics Committee,http://www.minnpost.com/dc-dispatches/2013/07/bachmann-investigation-goes-house-ethics-committee[/link]The [Office of Congressional Ethics] announced Tuesday that it had referred all seven of its investigations last quarter to the ethics panel for review, citing “substantial reason to believe a violation may have occurred.” The office didn’t detail exactly what its investigations centered on, or even the names of the lawmakers under investigation. In a statement, Bachmann lawyer William McGinley confirmed her case was among those referred to the Ethics Committee, though OCE has recommended dismissing at least some of the allegations it had been investigating, he said. “We are grateful that this matter is finally in the hands of the fair-minded and capable professionals at the House Committee on Ethics who we are confident will dismiss all allegations in this matter, including those that the OCE referred for dismissal — despite the false representation to the contrary in OCE’s quarterly ‘report,’” he said in a statement. “Under the House Rules, a referral by the OCE to the Committee on Ethics does not mean that a violation has occurred or that the Committee on Ethics has rendered any judgment in the matter. Any inference to the contrary is false.”

And the StarTribune said this on July 17

[link]Bachmann campaign allegations sent to House Ethics panel,http://www.startribune.com/politics/215766751.html[/link]Sources who have been interviewed by the OCE have told the Star Tribune that investigators focused on Bachmann’s 2011 book tour, which spanned from Minnesota and Iowa to the East Coast. Federal election and House ethics rules generally forbid candidates from using campaign funds or resources to sell or promote their own books, which are considered personal business activities.Unlike potential campaign finance violations, which could involve top officials in Bachmann’s campaign, the book tour allegations focus on Bachmann’s personal conduct in selling her book.

Funny thing. We're grateful too.

Unusual step for this Congress, messing in their own litterbox.

I'm amazed, too...the GOP turning on one of their own...I think they decided she was too wacky, even for them.

She already announced she was leaving. Piling on is politically advantageous for the 'Thugs - makes them look (almost) ethical and probably helps ensure that her seat will stay Republican.(Sorry SueDB - Da' rulz of da' board said I had to eliminate one of the embedded quotes).

According to a new MinnPost article, the only "breaking news" is that the House Ethics Committee has said that they will delay a decision about whether to investigate further until September.

[link]Ethics Committee acknowledges Bachmann probe, will decide next step in September,http://www.minnpost.com/dc-dispatches/2013/07/ethics-committee-acknowledges-bachmann-probe-will-decide-next-step-september[/link]By Devin Henry | 12:13 pmWASHINGTON — The House Ethics Committee announced Friday that it has received a report on Rep. Michele Bachmann and will decide by September whether to investigate it further.[highlight=#ffff40]This is a very routine part of the process: After the Office of Congressional Ethics conducts an investigation into a member (which we knew about in March) and after it forwards a report on that member to the Ethics Committee (which we knew about last week), the top Republican and Democrat on the committee have 45 days to either open an investigation, drop the case or delay their decision for another 45 days, which is what happened on Friday.[/highlight]The deferral is very common, but the announcement of it inherently acknowledges that the Ethics Committee has an ethics report on a specific member, which is why the committee’s statement made such a splash today. But, as the committee noted in its press release, "the mere fact of a referral or an extension, and the mandatory disclosure of such an extension and the name of the subject of the matter, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee."

I'm not surprised to hear about this book. One thing about the Michele Bachmann scandals that the national press never picked up on is that she was exposed by people who were once campaign insiders and, ideologically, some of her biggest supporters--RWNJs who don't like gays or book learnin' or Muslims, etc. Here's StarTribune's take on it:

[link]Now on Kindle: 'Bachmannistan... behind the lines',http://www.startribune.com/politics/blogs/221244641.html[/link]From the people who brought you the federal election complaints and affidavits against U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, now comes the book: ‘Bachmannistan.’ The tell-all book comes direct from the whistleblower, Florida minister Peter Waldron, the man behind most of the legal turmoil that has visited the Minnesota congresswoman since she ran for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. The ‘report from the inside’ is co-authored by Twin Cities attorney John Gilmore, the lawyer who represented former Bachmann aide Andy Parrish, who helped engineer her run for the presidency before a falling out in Iowa.[...]While the broad outlines of the tale might be familiar to readers who have followed the Bachmann campaign saga since its slow unraveling in late 2011, Waldron promises that much remains to be told, and he’s naming names.

She perhaps has Larry Klayman to thank for keeping this stuff from becoming national news earlier. Ken Avidor, who runs the Bradlee Dean Info blog, is one of the defendants in Klayman's lawsuit against CityPages. He also has a blog called Dump Bachmann that used to follow Bachmann quite closely. Both of these blogs have been hidden from the public since Klayman's lawsuit.

Butbutbut........she's one of the Esquire's hot picks for Speaker of the House.

Boehner aides expect him to resign next year. Why not today? Trey Gowdy, Dana Rohrabacher, Steve King, [highlight]Michele Bachmann[/highlight], Lou Gohmert would be a good replacement

Thanks for posting that. The Romney portion was interesting."(If Bachmann violated 11 laws with her activities, Mitt Romney easily committed thousands of violations throughout the 2012 election cycle. Romney’s super PAC and campaign were so coordinated that they even shared a building.)"Hey, Johnny Foreigner - Orly's suggestion of Bachmann as Speaker was my thought also. ;)
