It is very scary that most of us on TFB know what that is and where it came from. (Altho' I never really got it in the first place, other than it kept being repeated, kind of like Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger. But I always got that.)

It was a joke because Franco made the headlines for weeks and being close to death before he finally breathed his last. It's a bit like Mubarek and how he is being reported as being close to the end.

Yes, I can remember the original SNL broadcasts of Chevy Chase saying this every week.

Well, it only took me 36 years to have someone explain it to me. Thanks! (I still say, "Never mind," in a really nasal, whiny old-person's voice in the office when I get something wrong, it's kind of a joke in our staff meetings. They all know I will say it, kind of wait for it actually, but have not a clue where it comes from. Miss you Gilda!)

I initially read it as "Lonesome George, the last remaining tortoise of his kind and a conservative icon..."

An entirely understandable misread. No doubt you were thinking of Mitch McConnell.

Hmmm... guess I'm dating myself but I thought of George Gobel.

Only he's been dead since '91.

Brian Williams reported earlier she was in the last stages of leukemia. She was 71.

This one really made me sad. Actually tears came to my eyes. She was uniquely perceptive about what draws people together and drives them apart. I could watch When Harry Met Sally once a week for the rest of my life and never tire of it, especially the scenes on the sofa of the couples talking about how they fell in love. OMG, romantic love was alive and triumphant in Nora Ephron's world despite all the crap that comes with it! She never failed to make me love love! What a loss for us romantics. :(

I guess Matlock has tried his last case. RIP Lonesome Rhodes.

Edit: Patricia Neal was to die for (NADT)

My dad went to school with Andy Griffith. Sad.

Lonesome Rhodes was before my time. (Which is to say that I don't remember being affected by the movie contemporaneously.) But I do remember enjoying No Time for Sergeants when it first hit the little TV screen in the big bulky cabinet.

In assessing my own love-hate relationship with the South, Mayberry's Andy is as good as any way I can come up with to explain the love side. I'd have hated to find out that underneath that essentially good and sincere character lay hidden a baleful redneck.

Until now (courtesy of teh Google), I didn't know that Andy was an active Democrat. And even if I should have known, I'm just as glad I didn't know. But I'm proud to know it now.

You did good, Andy.

An actor friend of mine was featured in a couple of "Matlock" episodes and came to despise Griffith as a mean, disagreeable varmint.

Nil nisi bonum, however....
