My poor brain was just burning some old bunker oil from storage and was thinking...,
Have the RWNJ made it popular to display your racism to everyone, so that you can "stand up and be counted"?

Just from the yellow "Don't tread on me" flags on private flagpoles among the hobby farms and hobby ranches around here.....we know who they are, and we know what they did last summer.

People are certainly becoming Less afraid to be open about it, but they are still careful to count it in polite terms. For the moment.

Case in Point: PJMedia blog entry "Please, Please, Call me a Racist"

Quote:
You may have noticed, then, that while the charge of being a Racist™ is still significant, its barbs have dulled somewhat. Blogging and citizen journalism have demonstrated that the media are not merely useless but dangerous. Several months ago, we were told that a white man in Florida decided, spur of the moment, to slay a preteen black boy half his size for no good reason. It turns out that not one part of the foregoing sentence is true. And yet the media proceeds as if we still believed it.
Except for the slay part.

The rest (of the blog entry) is gibberish and hardly worth skimming, except as a data point for this discussion.

Racism never stopped, it just got quiet because people like us made it harder to show one's face in polite company if one were overtly so.

Ask anyone who lives in the South. Sure, there are pockets of people who share our values, but the racism is institutionalized, so ingrained i suspect most Southerners would say it doesn't exist.

It does. Its just very subtle. It was only in the 70's that segregation began to lift a bit. We moved to Virginia in the late 60's. I remember spring breaks in college, driving down to Lauderdale for some fun. Being a good liberal, from California to boot, I was shocked to see segregated bathrooms and restaurants all the way down I-95.

In Monrovia, CA, a town where at least two FBers have lived, the community swimming pool only let blacks swim on Wednesday afternoons. They then drained and refilled the pool. That didn't changed until the late 70's.

I don't think it's new. It's old.

I think there was a Harvard study published around 1990 in the New Yorker on how the politically correct police would trigger a racist/sexist backlash. Suppressing speech would not suppress attitudes and could actually prove counterproductive, the study argued.
Racism went underground in polite society. It never left. If you notice white southern politicians have learned to skillfully sidestep the issues of racism/sexism when addressing limiting voters' and abortion rights or challenging President Obama eligibility with their extremist base. They just say whatever they're doing is for We the People. They simply wrap everything they say in false patriotism when it really hides their hate.

Edit: There is allegedly one small town in Indiana where they still won't serve blacks at McDonalds.

"Fashion" is a strange measure. Perhaps the question should be about the level of tolerance for racism. The rise of the internet certainly exploded with the expression of racist views. That certainly made it seem like there is more now even though there seem to be less public and open tolerance for it. After 9/11, a lot of it was transferred to anti-Islamic fervor. A lot was also transferred to anti-Mexican illegal alien hysteria. We don't have a good way of dealing with people like Pasture Manning and Pasture Jones with his Koran burnings and hanging president displays.

Can you believe this in 2012?

Black couple says opposition at mostly white Miss. church forced a relocation of their wedding

Quote:
A Mississippi couple says the church where they planned to get married turned them away because they are black.

Charles and Te’Andrea Wilson say they had set the date and mailed invitations, but the day before their wedding they say they got bad news from the pastor of predominantly white First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs: Some members of the church complained about the black couple having a wedding there.

The Wilsons, who live in nearby Jackson, said they attend the church regularly although they are not members.

Pastor Stan Weatherford told WLBT TV (http://bit.ly/QSNlf8 ) he was surprised when a small number of church members opposed holding the wedding at the church.

Obama’s reelection sparks racially charged protest at Ole Miss

Quote:
Around midnight on election night, news spread on Twitter that a group of University of Mississippi students were protesting President Obama's reelection. The crowd quickly grew from a few dozen to as many as several hundred, and the rhetoric took an ugly turn as some people shouted racial slurs.

The Daily Mississippian student newspaper reported that hundreds of students “exchanged racial epithets and violent, politicized chants.” And a photo posted on Twitter shows a campaign sign being set on fire:

[imgwidth=300px]http://pbs.twimg.com/media/A7FGPPaCUAAPII3.jpg[/imgwidth]

Two people were arrested, one for public intoxication and one for failure to comply with police orders. There were no reported injuries or damaged property. But the southern university’s racial climate again came under scrutiny.

Chancellor Daniel W. Jones released a statement on Wednesday saying the matter was under investigation but that the reports of “uncivil language and shouted racial epithets” appear to be true. Jones condemned such behavior.

James Carter IV strikes again.

Exclusive: Lee Atwater’s Infamous 1981 Interview on the Southern Strategy

Quote:
It has become, for liberals and leftists enraged by the way Republicans never suffer the consequences for turning electoral politics into a cesspool, a kind of smoking gun. The late, legendarily brutal campaign consultant Lee Atwater explains how Republicans can win the vote of racists without sounding racist themselves:

You start out in 1954 by saying, “Nigger, nigger, nigger.” By 1968 you can’t say “nigger”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “Nigger, nigger.”

Now, the same indefatigable researcher who brought us Mitt Romney’s “47 percent” remarks, James Carter IV, has dug up the entire forty-two-minute interview from which that quote derives. Here, The Nation publishes it in its entirety for the very first time.

The whole interview is over there, with Rick Perlstein's analysis.

An answer to the question in the topic title is "Most definitely yes." Current postings by racist bloggers are sufficient to prove the point, but the racists are digging a bit deeper into the history of racism and resurrecting old documents. One of these is "Corruption of Blood," which made an appearance in 1990 and was amended and republished in 2010. Now it is republished again on Fourwinds10.com. This is an anti-Semitic and White Power site that looks to aliens for the salvation of the white race.

In discussing a bill to give residents of the District of Columbia the right to vote,
Quote:
Mr. Boyer, of Pennsylvania, said:

Quote:
The design of this bill is to inaugurate here, upon this most conspicuous state, the first act of the new political drama which is intended to culminate in the complete political equality of the races and the establishment of negro suffrage throughout the States. Constitutional amendments with this view have been already introduced at both ends of the Capitol. The object of the leaders of this movement is no longer concealed; and if there is any thing in their action to admire, it is the candor, courage, and ability with which they press their cause. The agitation is to go on until the question has been settled by the country, and it may as well be met here upon the threshold. This monstrous proposition is nothing less than the absorption into the body politic of the nation of colored population equal to one-sixth of all the inhabitants of the country, as the census reports will show. Four millions of the population so to be amalgamated have been just set free from a servitude, the debasing influences of which have many a time been vividly depicted in the antislavery speeches of the very men who are the most prominent champions of this new political gospel.

The argument in favor of the American negro's right to vote must be measured by his capacity to understand and his ability to use such right for the promotion of the public good. And that is the very matter in dispute. But the point does not turn simply upon the inferiority of the negro race; for difference without inferiority may unfit one race for political or social assimilation with another, and render their fusion in the same government incompatible with the general welfare. It is, as I conceive, upon these principles that we settle the question whether this is a white man's government.

The negro has no history of civilization. From the earliest ages of recorded time he has ever been a savage or a slave. He has populated with teaming millions the vast extent of a continent, but in no portion of it has he ever emerged from barbarism, and in no age or country has he ever established any other stable government than a despotism. But he is the most obedient and happy of slaves.

...
These men who stood for God, Country and Race were few as only the brave would at this time speak out and run the risk of being called a traitor to the new socialist republic. Of course, the colored race received the privilege of voting in the District of Columbia and after the passage of the 15th amendment, under conditions of martial law, the voting privilege was extended to the colored in the several States. Is this not a loss of State Sovereignty over who could vote which was established by the original constitutions of those States?

Racism never really went out of fashion. The pigs just found different ways of packaging their evil product.

Lee Atwater, the architect of this product, described the ad campaign in this way:

Quote:
You start in 1954 by saying ‘Nigger, nigger, nigger.’

By 1968 you can’t say ‘Nigger.’ That hurts you. It backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states rights and all that stuff and you get so abstract. Now you talk about cutting taxes and these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that’s part of it.

I’m not saying that. But I’m saying that if it is getting that abstract and that coded, we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. Obviously sitting around saying we want to cut taxes and we want this, is a lot more abstract than even the busing thing and a hell of a lot more abstract than nigger nigger. So anyway you look at it, race is coming on the back burner.

Pig rhetoric has remained pretty much exactly the same since Atwater.

The full interview in which he said these things has just recently been republished in its entirety.

Black family flees O.C. city after tires slashed, racial taunts

Quote:
An African American police officer and his family said they fled their upscale Orange County community after rocks were thrown through their windows, their tires were slashed and racial taunts were shouted by passing motorists. Last month, someone shot corrosive acid pellets into his garage, which damaged his car.

The family, who asked that they not be identified out of fear for their safety, said they packed up and moved to Corona and reported the alleged hate crimes to the Orange County Human Relations Commission.

Though African Americans account for a small fraction of the county's population — no more than 2% — they are the most frequently targeted group for hate crimes, said Rusty Kennedy, the executive director of the commission.

--snip--

After the family talked about the incident, the college-age son said that when he rode his bike to his job at a nearby Home Depot, he was taunted with racial epithets by passing motorists and told to go back home.

Philadelphia Magazine March 2013 "Being White in Philly: Whites, race, class, and the things that never get said" by Robert Huber.
Quote:
It was a different place then, before the war. You could walk home from the Blue Jay restaurant, at 29th and Girard, at any hour. Or up to Ridge to the Amish Market.

John worked in the offices of local long-distance haulers. He’s small, with a bowling-ball potbelly and macular degeneration; his right eye is closed and sightless. He chain-smokes Virginia Slims as we sit in his enclosed front porch and he describes his neighborhood, back when he was a boy.

Milk and bread and ice delivered to your door. A city worker coming by every evening to climb a ladder to light the gas lamps that cast a beautiful glow. There were four nearby houses of prostitution, and tailors and drugstores, a butcher, barbers, a candy store—a self-contained world. Everybody had a laundry tree in the alley out back, and every Monday there’d be a snow of white—until shirts and towels and sheets began disappearing, right after the Second World War.

That’s when blacks from the South, with chips on their shoulders, John says, moved North. They moved into great brownstones above Girard and trashed them, using banisters and doors to stoke their furnaces instead of buying coal. Before long, it looked like Berlin after the war. Whites moved out.

For those who know Philadelphia from something other than the Amtrak station, does this article ring true? I felt very uncomfortable reading it, which is probably what Huber intended. However, my discomfort depends upon his account of race and class in Philadelphia being true.

Huber's questions are easily turned to the service of racism. His article was picked up in "The Coach Is Right" and then in Free Republic. "The Coach" writes:
Quote:
Since America is more than seventy percent White, an honest media would present lots of stories about minorities, especially Blacks victimizing Whites even as they demand more money from them; but of course they don’t. The media doesn’t concern itself with the truth about Black on White crime. It has become virtually axiomatic that stories about violent crimes omit the race of the perpetrator even when it is known and would be helpful in capturing him.

While statistics about Black on White crime tell the worst of the story, most Whites have instinctively learned to stay off their town’s “Martin Luther King Boulevard” for their own safety. Nevertheless, that strategy has its limitations. Large cities have seen their centers became minority enclaves and it is woe to those Whites who innocently and/or naively wander into such areas even during daylight.

A recent “Philly” magazine article talks about the dangers Whites face by merely attempting to conduct everyday business in Philadelphia.

The author found foreigners willing to speak freely about their observations of Blacks. A Russian student described Black rudeness and lack of ambition; a Panamanian talked about the “moral poverty” of the Blacks she met. Because neither grew up being intimidated into silence by America’s political correctness enforced by our media, they had no hesitation to speak freely of their observations of Blacks.

This is just a goddamn pack of lies. Any time you see a story about a criminal and they're black, they have a photo, usually a mugshot. You can generally only tell when a report is about a white criminal because there is not a picture.

The article made me uncomfortable as well, but for a few different reasons. May I ramble?

The writer seems to struggle with his own issues...the first that comes to me after reading the entire article is that he does not report speaking with any of the non-white residents. He also relays "stories" from white residents, laying out poignant "I tried to be nice to "these people" but you just can't help them...and the sweet story about how the benevolent white folks allow the little black children to come and trick-or-treat in their neighborhood, but most didn't even bother to dress up! The NERVE!

I think what bothers me the most is how the writer seems to assume that blacks have been offered everything under the sun with civil rights and all at stuff, and they just take advantage of it...that the situations they are in, and how they live, are the result of laziness...sitting around smoking pot, living off government assistance, 'cause you know white people don't do that. And dammit, here we are trying to move into their neighborhoods, bring them up out of squaller and see how they treat us?

I do understand the awkwardness sometimes between diffent races. But the dialog does not begin with false benevolence. That is a high-minded, missionary mistake. But I won't get on that soap box now.

Towards the end of the article, he says this, " Claire, the widow I talked to in Fairmount who was walking her terri-poos, doesn’t worry about saying the wrong thing in her neighborhood, about offending her black neighbors, because she’s confident of her own feelings when it comes to matters of race. But like many people, I yearn for much more: that I could feel the freedom to speak to my African-American neighbors about, say, not only my concerns for my son’s safety living around Temple, but how the inner city needs to get its act together. "

This was an article by a guy who is uncomfortable with race issues, so writes an article about white people being uncomfortable with race by using examples of white people being victims of ... what?

This is, so far as I can tell, just a slightly more polite version of what you see on Stormfront.

Quote:

Gentrifying a neighborhood often shoots up the property rates, so old people who have been living on a fixed income can suddenly no longer afford to live where they have lived all their lives. And the gentrifiers are apparently completely oblivious as to why they're disliked.

First the hipsters and artists move in, often squatting or otherwise living somewhere marginal, then it develops a cachet that makes it attractive to these bourgeois toads, who move in and wreck it for everyone.

This guy somewhat reminds me of David Brooks in that he appears to have a Magoo-like obliviousness to the unstated messages he is delivering. But unlike Brooks, his unstated messages are ugly and racist.

I was born and grew up in the Philly suburbs. Went to college and law school in Philly and I've worked in Center City for almost 20 years. My daughter went to Temple and lived in North Philadelphia.

I admit I haven't read the article and don't intend to do so, motly because all of the commentary I've read criticizing it. Much of that criticism concerns the failure of the writer to talk to any black people, the whiny tone of the (anonymous) people who were interviewed, and the focus on black-white relations to the exclusion of other minority populations.

I know too many white people who are openly racist in this city to believe any story that contends that whites are so victimized or unable to talk about race. They only can't talk about race the way the want - without being challenged with the factual inaccuracies of their perspective that they are superior to "them."

When I was in college I was driving with one of my roommates and some my friends (not hers) back to our apartment when a couple of young (black) kids tried to beat the traffic light on foot across City Ave. They were probably 12 or 13, and I'm sure they knew better than to cross such a busy street like that, but being young, stupid and invincible they did it anyway. We have all done the same kind of thing at some point. Of course I slowed down, but my roommate said "just go ahead and hit the niglet." I was shocked to hear her say something like that, I didn't know her really well, but that kind of attitude, so casually displayed among people she didn't really know showed me what she really thought. She said it without even thinking. It was so alien to me - to hate someone you didn't know and who had never done anything to you personally so viscerally to say something like that in front of virtual strangers. I told her that if she ever said something like that in front of me I'd never give her another ride. She tried to make it a joke, but it didn't make it better. I actually ended up moving out shortly after that. It was really that upsetting. Still is upsetting, since this happened close to 25 years ago and I think of it every time I drive through that intersection.

Some people resent even the hint that racism still exists in America. Some might say that the only racists in Huber's article are the blacks. Others would claim to be color-blind and to be simply "stating the facts." This must be the new direction of today's "polite" racists.

Huber is the Features Editor of Philadelphia Magazine. He has been writing about crime in the inner city for a while, such as
June 6, 2011 Where Center City Meets North Philly: Can the divide ever be bridged?
Sept. 22, 2011 My Mt. Airy Block Has Been Attacked: What can a neighborhood do?

This article, which I thought was sarcastic, may say more about Huber than he knows. April 28, 2011 "A Devoted Birther Will Never Give Up: My fellow Americans, Barack Hussein Obama is not one of us"

If Huber were to ask my advice, it would be that he lay off writing about race and about crime for a few years. And talk with some of the people about whom you have been writing.
