We all knew this day would come but it is still not easy to announce a milestone on the highway of life. Tom and Ray Magliozzi, better known as "Click and Clack," will end new recordings of Car Talk in October, after 35 years of continuous production at WBUR.

On behalf of everyone at WBUR which has proudly been the home of Car Talk, I want to express my gratitude to Tom and Ray and Doug Berman and his whole team. Their extraordinary work and endless hours of wit and wisdom and entertainment have delighted audiences across the country and the world. As most of you know, Car Talk began as a little experiment on WBUR and reached national distribution when Susan Stamberg heard about it and put a regular segment on Weekend Edition. The rest is history. Special credit goes to Doug Berman, without whom Car Talk would never have reached its levels of success or been sustainable for all these years.

Tom and Ray are a national treasure. They have a special place in the history of public radio. They taught us all about the broadest possibilities of providing wonderful entertainment that is funny, smart, self-deprecating and surprisingly wise. Because of their work, we have been able to broaden our perspectives on how to serve our communities of listeners like you with creativity, intelligence and warmth. How lucky we have been to have them on our air for all these years!

We're pleased that Car Talk will continue to be produced from its archival material. Doug assures me that there is years' worth of material that has yet to be aired. We hope you'll help us honor this legacy by continuing to tune in as you always have.

I has a serious sad. There is nothing more enjoyable on a Saturday morning drive to somewhere else than listening to Car Talk, I shall never forget a woman calling in to say that she had a black widow's nest in her car and the brothers said "do you have a disgruntled spouse?" I will seriously miss those guys.

The NPR show was enjoyable ... but I loved their first show, where they were the mechanics of last resort. They'd only take your call if your dealer/mechanic had failed after multiple attempts, or if you did it yourself and clearly knew what you were talking about.

I lived in their fair city of Cambridge for many years. Their ability to be working class, middle-brow, and culturally elite at the same time mirrors the city itself in many ways.

Car Talk is what roped me into being a paying supporter of NPR. :((

At one time, Car Talk was the most popular non-news show on NPR. Prairie Home Companion runs on many public radio stations but is not an NPR production.

I doubt I've ever listened to the show without laughing out loud a few times.

So glad to hear that there's years of new shows still coming from the archival material. :-bd

That's the good news. 35 years of "unheard" material is available, plenty to keep it fresh for a whole new generation.

Other than their humor, which is timeless, could talk about issues with 35 year old cars be very entertaining for anyone except for :geezer: motorheads?

I've read that their weekly column will continue.

I sent them an e-mail in 2009. I wrote it to be read before the third half of the show. It included a dumb joke, something aligned with the show. I hadn't listened to the show yet (I download the podcasts), and came into the office on Monday to find a sign hanging under my name as "as heard on Car Talk". Yup, they read my letter as written :-bd , badly mispronouncing my name (I didn't think of providing a pronunciation guide - and no, "Walt Tuttle" is not my name).

I'll miss their goofy sense of humor.

How much of it will involve carburetors in old cars? (Not that there will be anything wrong with a show focusing on carburetors.)

Folks are holding onto their cars longer, it's up over 10 years now, and there are hundreds of millions of carberated cars still on the road, I think the shows will still apply quite well.

Not if you're a :geezer: motorhead. For anybody else,

Their answers and insight when it involves disagreements among couples about car issues make me =)) . I think that stuff's timeless whether you're talking carburetors, how much water to carry for your radiator when you drive in the desert, or how to use your ALB's when stopping on ice and snow.

I don't know anything (much) about cars; I listen to them for their patter, humor, and the puzzler. So I'll listen to them as long as they're on the air!

I still shake my head at the gal who called in asking if it was ok to read while driving. ](*,) Needless to say, Click and Clack were NOT on board with that! Unfortunately, she's exactly the type who will be texting while driving now.

I never actually listened to the show (no car, no radio). I only catch NPR online when someone mentions a specific show.

OTH, I can see the WBUR studio and transmitter. WBUR is, of course, Belize University Radio.
