Eugene Polley, Inventor Of TV Remote, Dies At 96

CHICAGO — Couch potatoes everywhere can pause and thank Eugene Polley for hours of feet-up channel surfing. His invention, the first wireless TV remote, began as a luxury, but with the introduction of hundreds of channels and viewing technologies it has become a necessity.

Just ask anyone who's lost a remote.

Polley died of natural causes Sunday at a suburban Chicago hospital, said Zenith Electronics spokesman John Taylor. The former Zenith engineer was 96.

OMG, he might as well have invented the phonograph or the light bulb! Yeah, I know that's exaggerated in some ways (sorry, Mr. Edison) -- but in others, it's not.

RIP, Mr. Polley

Here's the BBC interviewing the Director of the IEEE Museum (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers History Center) about Eugene Polley. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... 3_05_2012/ at 1:38:00. Worth a listen.

Was that little old lady from Pasadena?

Tragedy lived to be over 100 and an 90-yr old runs over him. Seriously. Cut down in his prime really. And yes he was legendary.

I'm not surprised, nor do I think the autopsy results will be a surprise.

A great but very troubled boxer.

From NYT Sports

Johnny Tapia, Champion Boxer Amid Chaos, Dies at 45

Quote:
Johnny Tapia, a prizefighter who won world titles in three weight classes in a chaotic life that included jail, struggles with mental illness, suicide attempts and five times being declared clinically dead as a result of drug overdoses, was found dead at his home in Albuquerque on Sunday. He was 45.

The Albuquerque police said an autopsy would be done in the next few days. Foul play is not suspected.

Tapia, who was 5 feet 6 inches, said the raw fury he displayed in winning his world titles came from the horrific memory of seeing his mother being kidnapped and murdered when he was 8. He said he saw every opponent as his mother’s killer.

[...]

Mike Tyson called Tapia one of the greatest fighters ever. He won 59 fights, 30 by knockout; lost 5; and drew 2. He was knocked out only once.

Doc Watson has died... http://music.msn.com/music/article.aspx ... 234#scpti2

Quote:
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) -- Doc Watson, the Grammy-award winning folk musician whose lightning-fast style of flatpicking influenced guitarists around the world for more than a half-century, died Tuesday at a hospital in Winston-Salem, according to a hospital spokeswoman and his management company. He was 89.

Watson, who was blind from age 1, recently had abdominal surgery that resulted in his hospitalization.

Arthel "Doc" Watson's mastery of flatpicking helped make the case for the guitar as a lead instrument in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was often considered a backup for the mandolin, fiddle or banjo. His fast playing could intimidate other musicians, even his own grandson, who performed with him.

I saw him fight once, from the front row, and it was an amazing thing to watch. Tapia methodically turned his opponent into a withered pile of mashed potatoes - with gravy - and knocked the guy out in the fourth round. Talk about focus.

He will always be considered to be one of New Mexico's greatest sports heroes.

Oh my, the passing of another great one.

We lost Earl Scruggs just a couple of months ago, and then Levon Helm, and now Doc.

They provided the soundtrack of my life. I haz a true sad this spring.

Kathryn Joosten, who played Mrs. Landingham on West Wing, died today after a lengthy battle with lung cancer.

She was one of my favorite characters on the show she she showed enormous courage during her illness. May God bless her.

Ray Bradbury's works were among the earliest I devoured as I got acquainted with science fiction and fantasy at age 13-14. Illustrated Man, Martian Chronicles -- what magic. I consciously emulate him, at times, in my own writing.

Peace.

I tape stuff to the walls of my office, like a dumb kid. The stuff up there is not very permanent. Most of it gets pulled down and tossed after a while.

This has survived four office moves:

The little bit taped below the main article informs me that Bradbury owned 22 cats at one point.

A great one :(

Washington Post obituary.

Quote:
“People say, ‘Are you a fantasy writer?’ No,” Mr. Bradbury told the Charlotte Observer in 1997. “ ‘Are you a science fiction writer?’ No. I’m a magician.”

He explained, “Science fiction is the art of the possible, not the art of the impossible. As soon as you deal with things that can’t happen, you are writing fantasy.”

Oh, my. I hadn't read the papers yet. God bless his soul. He was one of a kind and a fixture in so many L.A. Cultural events. He will be so missed by me and many more. I am so sad.

Bradbury was pretty much my introduction to science fantasy. He could paint landscapes with words. I shall miss him but still have him in his books.

I'm thinking maybe I should give him a try. I am embarrassed to admit I have never read anything by him.
