We had a sinkhole in front of our store today! Quite a bit of excitement as there was an suv parked above it when it opened. I went out at 12:30 to take the bog to the patch of grass to do her business and I saw a lot of water bubbling up under the car. When I went back in I called the Dallas water dept. Bob said they would send someone right out. 45 minutes later the trucks showed up. By then the water was shooting up under the car, a hloe had opened up and the passenger-side front wheel had dropped into it. 45 minutes later the water was shooting up to the top of the car and the hole was big enough for a second wheel to drop in. By the time the tow truck arrived, water was shooting up about 10 feet and a third wheel was sinking. The amazing thing about it was the owner of the car. He was dealing with the situation so well, laughing ang joking about it. He told me "Hey, what else can I do about it?" what a great attitude. I'll post pics tomorrow.

It's worth noting that in Arizona today, justice was served on one racist nutjob:

White supremacist gets 40 years in 2004 Scottsdale bombing

by Ofelia Madrid - May. 22, 2012 09:52 PM
The Republic | azcentral.com

A federal court judge on Tuesday imposed a 40-year sentence on a White supremacist who was behind a 2004 bombing that seriously injured Scottsdale's diversity director.

A jury found Dennis Mahon, 61, guilty in February of conspiracy to damage buildings and property by means of explosives, malicious damage of a building by means of explosives, and distribution of information related to explosives.

Mahon was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the first two counts and 33 months for the third count, all to be served concurrently.

His twin brother, Daniel, was found not guilty of a single count, conspiracy to damage buildings and property.

This story has something for everyone - lawyers, schadenfreude enthusiasts, Matt Taibbi fans.

Quote:
It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes God smiles on us. Last week, he smiled on investigative reporters everywhere, when the lawyers for Goldman, Sachs slipped on one whopper of a legal banana peel, inadvertently delivering some of the bank’s darker secrets into the hands of the public.

The lawyers for Goldman and Bank of America/Merrill Lynch have been involved in a legal battle for some time – primarily with the retail giant Overstock.com, but also with Rolling Stone, the Economist, Bloomberg, and the New York Times. The banks have been fighting us to keep sealed certain documents that surfaced in the discovery process of an ultimately unsuccessful lawsuit filed by Overstock against the banks.

Last week, in response to an Overstock.com motion to unseal certain documents, the banks’ lawyers, apparently accidentally, filed an unredacted version of Overstock’s motion as an exhibit in their declaration of opposition to that motion. In doing so, they inadvertently entered into the public record a sort of greatest-hits selection of the very material they’ve been fighting for years to keep sealed.

I contacted Morgan Lewis, the firm that represents Goldman in this matter, earlier today, but they haven’t commented as of yet. I wonder if the poor lawyer who FUBARred this thing has already had his organs harvested; his panic is almost palpable in the air. It is both terrible and hilarious to contemplate. The bank has spent a fortune in legal fees trying to keep this material out of the public eye, and here one of their own lawyers goes and dumps it out on the street.

For the leximaniacs, here's a fun little time-waster:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/quiz/index.htm

I haven't figured out how those people on the leader board got over 4000. To do that, you have to be able to click on the correct answer in less than one second.

It helps to know words such as 'contumacious.'

3940, damn you!

I think 4000 is doable.

Edit: Also it helps to get more than one "hardest" in the group of words.

I got 4000 a couple of times, but I can't figure out how to get the cursor over to the answer in less than a second. It has to be reflexive at that point.

Eyebone taco has been installed. Typing with one eye, five fingers. No real pain. Success.

Normal surgery takes 20 min., mine took a little over 50 min. :?:

Rumors are swirling that it took three tries to knock me out. Doc told me I'd be semi-conscious, "if you see a bright white light, that's the microscope so look straight at it and you'll make things easier for me."

OK, doc.

But Wifehorn claims they told her I wouldn't stop kicking. They gave me the relax-and-vegetate juice. It didn't work. They doubled the dose. That didn't work either. Finally they gave up and put me completely under.

Moral of the Story:
Don't try knockout drops in my drink at the Myrtle Beach Meetup in October, 'cuz I'm too tough to get knocked out. [-X

Are you, or were you once, a redhead? That is a fairly common story for redheads.

Congratulations on getting through it. If you had stayed awake, you might have enjoyed the conversation. When I had a detached retina that had to be reattached with a "buckle," I still remember the surgeon's "Oh, sh*t." I've never had the courage to ask him about that. Besides, he and the anesthesiologist spent much of the operation discussing which model of Lexus they were going to buy.

Glad it went OK, Foggy.

I'm the other way, I'm easily knocked out. Some years back I had to have and endoscopy , they give me a muscle relaxant and it knocked me out cold. Woke up about half an hour later.

Somewhere back on PJ redheads on the forum discussed very similar experiences in operating rooms. I think it has to do with being able to survive Scandinavian or north German winters and occasional raids on Irish monasteries without noticing the spear in your side. Wikipedia

If the phenomenon exists, it is supposed to be a genetic trait. Why having two copies of a recessive gene that yields redheads would affect susceptibility to anesthesia is beyond me.

Both nerve cells and melanocytes (pigment cells) derive from the same fetal stem tissue (neural crest). It makes some sense that a gene that affects one might have effects on other cells from the same origin. I have no idea why it actually does, though.

Doc said he expected my eye to be about 20/400 when he checked it just now. 'Course, you can't get new glasses until he does the second eye.

My eye is 20/25. 8-) :D

He says, "Well, that will probably improve over the next couple weeks." :-bd

Colors are amazingly brighter. Only downside is, he gave me this clear plastic shield to tape over my eye while I sleep. That's gonna be a PITA, but only for a week.

I's a happy ol' rooster. \:D/

Fogster,

I would assume that after your battle with the GB pain, you've probably developed a small tolerance to pain meds. Happens a lot.

Glad everything turned out fine!
