Similar to what Carl Sagan said about humans -- that we are made of star stuff, doG knows how many of the atoms currently in our bodies once were part of some other individual's body. For all I know, I may have atoms in me that were once were a part of Da Vinci, Plato and a whole host of famous (or infamous) people. I figure it will tough enough for the angels to get that sorted out so I'm not too worried about my ashes.

Besides, it was a practice in Europe that when church graveyards became too crowded to allow any more burials, old graves were dug up and the bones burned. The ashes were then reburied in the graveyard. Supposedly, this is where the word "bon(e)fire came from. If burning old bones was OK with the church in the olden days, well I'm just following their lead, but just skipping the part where my body is eaten away over time, leaving just the bones.

Your comment reminds me of one of those "billboards from God" that were a big deal a few years ago. The billboard read something to the effect that God had sent us a cure for cancer, but someone aborted the baby who God had planned to develop that cure. My thought was that if God is all knowing and all powerful, he would have known that the baby was going to be aborted and do something to stop. How weak is God if some mere mortal can easily derail his grand plans?

God, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus are all equally real. Or not. That most human beings deny this reality is a sad commentary on the human race.

Awww Sterngard... but I liked the Easter candy. And the Christmas presents. My family did a lot of doing without when I was young, so I never saw the tooth fairy. Those holidays were real, doncha know.

The Tooth Fairy doesn't visit me anymore, but I enjoy annual visits from the fat guy and the monotreme rabbit. Your point?

I have a friend who says when he dies, he wants a keg put on top of his casket, with a sign "The beer's on Steve". (Ok, this is Texas, but I still thought it was funny).

We have a version of that here.

Quote:

Saw an Indonesian maid heading to Vivo by bus with caucasian baby in her arms

Looked Indonesian. Might have been Filipino. Not sure.

She got on at Pasir Panjang rd opposite Redwood serviced apartment, and was on the way to Vivo city holding the baby at about 11.30am today.

Baby looked about 9-12mths old. No pram, no carrier, no snug-a-bug type wrap thing to hold it safely. Maid was carrying nothing except the baby. Bus driver sped off before maid could take a seat safely at the back end of the bus. Baby could have been hurt had maid lost her balance. Maid really should have grabbed first available seat at the front of the bus - you know, the ones that say "Reserved for Elderly/Disabled/Parents with Children".

I wondered whether the parents knew that baby was "travelling" in such a way.

There was no bag with the maid, so I wondered if the baby had anything to sustain it whilst at Vivo (spare nappy, something to drink, tissues to give baby a wipe down). Definitely no bag; checked carefully.

Baby looked cheerful for half the distance but then got grumpy and cried a bit before maid got off opposite Vivo/Harbourfront. VERY hot day. baby thankfully was wearing a little cap with those tail things to protect back of neck too.

Not sure I would want my child getting around like this with a maid - no pram to sleep in, just getting hoisted about town. Baby was touching the metal railings on the bus seats and then sucking it's arms/hands.

I imagine that the journey home would have been even more precarious, with maid not only having to manage baby but also the grocery shopping....

Just sayin'

The funniest part isn't the posting, it's the replies. Some snarky, but quite a few commiserating right along with the original poster.

Why do they name terrible things after cats?

When are we gonna see some dogastrophes?

What if people became dogatonic in the hospital?

What if you got dogaracts in your eyes?

Actually, that last one happened to me. I'm all set for dogaract surgery. May 23 (right eye) July 11 (left eye).

Can't wait. \:D/ :-

Move to MS! We discovered a while back that burying someone in the back yard apparently isn't illegal here, when a woman bought a house a couple of blocks over and uncovered 2 graves (with headstones!) in an overgrown area of the back yard. After researching the issue, it was decided there was no law against it.

I blame it on chemistry. There are cations, but no dogions. For some reason they decided that stuff on the right side of the periodic table should be called "anions" instead.

Lame :)

Foggy, hope your cataract procedures go smoothly. A lot of people no longer need glasses to read afterward.

As for being named after cats......not really. All those words come from the Greek prefix 'kata-' which means 'down.' Oddly, 'cataract' originally meant 'waterfall' but during it Latin phase came to mean 'gate' or 'obstruction.'

Here's a useful 'kate-' word:

Quote:
catachresis Look up catachresis at Dictionary.com
1580s, from L. catachresis, from Gk. katakhresis "misuse" (of a word), from katakhresthai "to misuse," from kata- "down" (here with a sense of "perversion") + khresthai "to use" (see hortatory). Related: Catachrestic.

I had cataract surgery two years ago. My friends all said that it was a piece of cake, but I didn't quite believe them since I've had a number of surgeries over the years and they always seem to be worse than I expected. This time my friends were right. I got a light sedative that basically relaxed me. It seemed that the surgery was done in a flash. The one thing they either didn't tell me about (or I simply forgot it) was that in 50% of folks who have cataracts removed develop a film-like covering on the back of the lens. It's removed with a few laser bursts. It took me a long time to realize that this film developed in my left eye because when the cedar trees do their thing, I'm continually putting in eye drops to get rid of the film substances that develops in my eyes when they are exposed to ceder. It wasn't until I had my annual eye exam that I found out the it wasn't allergies that was causing the film.

In both the cataract surgery and the removeal of the film, I was back to normal (OK, at least normal for me  ) the next day.

Esseff, thanks for sharing the derivation of the "cat" in the words Foggy mentioned. I recall that the "cat" was related to something other than a feline, but I couldn't remember what it was. I love learning how words develop -- and change over time.

My cataract surgery had the effect that colors became very much brighter. I did not miss the Xmas-tree colored streetlights.

Who knew that there are dirty-minded loonz in Canada of all places? I knew about loons and the loonie coin, but the ability (and eagerness) to see semi-naked women on a monument to 10,000 Canadian soldiers who died in France? Or to see the Twin Towers in a World War I monument?

I never realized how much the cataracts affected colors -- everything had a yellowish tinge to it -- until I had my first eye done and could compare the before and after effects of cataracts. Before I had the surgery, I firmly believed that I had little or no gray in my hair. Because I am a blond and the cataracts gave everything that yellowish tinge, the gray in my hair looked blond instead of gray. It was a shock to find out just how much gray I did have. :o :o
