As the campaign season heats up, several candidates for congress have started to pander to the birther crowd.

The latest is Republican candidate for North Carolina's 9th district (Charlotte)

Quote:
“I have reason to be suspicious,” he said. “But I don’t know. I haven’t seen the facts. I think there’s a lot of smoke and generally when there’s smoke there’s got to be fire somewhere.”

The comments have the usual scattering of birther echobots, but a good number of people have roundly denounced the stupidity.

well that didn't last long, they shut down the comments because of the "personal attacks."

The majority of them were attacking Pendergraph for his views.

Well as they say, if you can't stand the smoke, stay out of the kitchen. (Or something...)

The Charlotte Observer retracted their endorsement of Pendergraph.

Pendergraph prompts questions about how he would govern

What a run for Republican Jim Pendergraph. After winning the Observer’s endorsement in his bid for Congress, he has done nothing but embarrass us and himself.

By buddying up to one of America’s more hateful egomaniacs and then joining with fringe “birthers” to question President Obama’s citizenship, Pendergraph has contradicted much of what he told the Observer’s editorial board in his endorsement interview last month. As a result, we have lost faith in him, and urge voters to consider Edwin Peacock or Ric Killian in the 9th Congressional District race.

The 'hateful egomaniac' is Sheriff Joe.

Quote:
Then he rallied in Huntersville with Maricopa County (Ariz.) Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a Melvillian character on a never-ending crusade against Latinos. The only thing that energizes Arpaio more than stroking his ego is profiling Hispanics. The U.S. Justice Department found Arpaio led “a pervasive culture of discriminatory bias against Latinos” and one expert in the report said Arpaio led the worst racial profiling in U.S. history.

Pendergraph pandered further this week by saying he has “reason to be suspicious” about whether President Obama was born in the United States. “… Generally when there’s smoke, there’s got to be fire somewhere,” he said, even as he acknowledged “I haven’t seen the facts.”

Not if there's a smoke machine like WND. And smoking mirrors.

No on everything. Dismantle all social programs (except those that he may be on, in which case keep them going for him only).

What's with the water in North Carolina?

A bunch more candidates have gone full moon birther

Quote:
Richard Hudson, considered a leading Republican candidate in the race to unseat Democratic U.S. Rep. Larry Kissell in the 8th Congressional District, told a Tea Party group in Rowan County recently that “there’s no question President Obama is hiding something on his citizenship.”

Dr. John Whitley, one of Hudson’s opponents in Tuesday’s primary, declared Obama’s birth certificate a “poorly reproduced forgery” after comparing it to the Hawaiian birth certificate of one of his campaign workers.

“There is a tremendous amount of smoke here,” Whitley said. “In fact, it’s called a smoke screen.”

George Hutchins, a candidate in District 4, is convinced the birth certificate is a forgery. He promises if elected in the fall to help lead an investigation of the birth certificate, regardless of whether Obama is re-elected or not. The Republican winner in the 4th will face Democrat David Price in the general election.

I wish I could move there. The COL seems to be much more reasonable then what it is here. 700 sqft 1-Bdrm apart is almost $900/mo.

:((

Richard Hudson is very upset with The Observer for calling him a birther.

tweets:

Quote:
@RINOHasBeen doesn't matter. He's POTUS. Fact. Let's focus on other issues. Jobs, healthcare, etc. @obs left that quote out of story

@candiedwhiskey I told observer he's POTUS & this issue is distraction but facts messed up the story they already wrote b4 they talked to me

@RINOHasBeen shame on you 4 trust @observer I'm no #birther I said its a distraction & he's POTUS but they left that out. Vid out of context

@laconically @jonathankappler @rebic I never said I was a birther

https://twitter.com/#!/RichHudson/

Don't trust the observer. He was just taken out of context. okay. :P

Charlotte Observer, May 4, 2012:

Quote:
Richard Hudson, considered a leading Republican candidate in the race to unseat Democratic U.S. Rep. Larry Kissell in the 8th Congressional District, told a Tea Party group in Rowan County recently that “there’s no question President Obama is hiding something on his citizenship.”

Quote:
Reached Friday, Hudson appeared to back away from earlier comments. He would not say whether he believes Obama was born in the United States, but noted that he had never seen the president’s birth certificate. If elected, he said he hopes to eliminate any future legitimacy issues by helping implement rules and procedures that’d verify the president was born in the United States.

It is like their big excuse is -
"I've never seen the BC"

These candydates seem to think that just because they haven't 'SEEN' the BC, that gives them a dodge when asked questions.

Unlike Hudson, another of the North Carolina birther candidates, John Whitley, wears his birtherism proudly.

He went on Anderson Cooper last night and looked like a total fool

Why do birthers go on Anderson Cooper? He just humiliates them.

I think Coop is a better birfer confronter than most, but I was disappointed in this interview.

Once Whitley admitted that he had modeled his "investigation" on Arpaio's, Cooper should have brought out the fact that the CCP came to the conclusion that the hard copy LFBC photographed in Savanna Guthrie's hand never even existed.

I wonder if the good doctor would have been interested in defending that conclusion.

Whitley only got 4 bites on his invitation to like his birfing position. What do we know about his district and his chances of getting elected. His biggest issue is that he promises to help repeal Obamacare.

What an idiot. "Anybody can come and feel the seal" on his employee's BC...

And just how long does he think President Obama's BC would last if "anyone" could handle it?

Looked into the North Carolina Congressional race to see if Dr. Whitley had a chance. It does not seems so. He running for the Republican nomination for the 8th cong. dist. against 4 other repugs including the birfer lite Hudson. Hudson has been declared the favorite to win the primary. He is not favored to win against the Dem incumbent in the general even though the redistricting is more favorable to the GOP. The Dem won in 2010 even though the district was labeled a toss up and the repug had slightly better polling. The Dem seems a blue dog anyway.

Oh, today's election day in NC. Let's see how much birfing helps these guys. :-k

With 43% of precincts reporting, Whitley is in last place out of 5 candidates, with 14% of the vote. Hudson is leading with 32%.

Right. The birfing did not seem to help. Dr. Whitley did not get many votes and the fewest of all. Hudson will be in a run-off with another repug but he's way out in front. But if you look at the total Dems voting today versus the total Republican votes for this district, then the incumbent Dem should be the winner.

GOP candidates from N.C. back down from questioning Obama's birthplace

Quote:
After questioning the authenticity of President Barack Obama's birthplace, North Carolina congressional candidate Richard Hudson now says he's willing to give the state of Hawaii the benefit of the doubt and accept that the president was born in the United States.

--snip--

"I could have expressed myself better," Hudson said in an interview at his home in Concord, N.C. "It's not an issue I've talked about before. Once I had time to really think about my words better and I was not in a forum with a one-minute clock running, I could have given a better answer that I accept the fact that the state of Hawaii says (Obama's birth certificate) is legitimate."

--snip--

Like Hudson, Pendergraph has backed away from his earlier doubts about the president's birthplace. He said Friday he has no reason to disbelieve the Hawaii birth certificate.

--snip--

"I'm willing to look at the evidence, period, and wished I'd kept my mouth shut," he said.
