What a run for Republican Jim Pendergraph. After winning the Observer’s endorsement in his bid for Congress, he has done nothing but embarrass us and himself.

By buddying up to one of America’s more hateful egomaniacs and then joining with fringe “birthers” to question President Obama’s citizenship, Pendergraph has contradicted much of what he told the Observer’s editorial board in his endorsement interview last month. As a result, we have lost faith in him, and urge voters to consider Edwin Peacock or Ric Killian in the 9th Congressional District race.

Then he rallied in Huntersville with Maricopa County (Ariz.) Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a Melvillian character on a never-ending crusade against Latinos. The only thing that energizes Arpaio more than stroking his ego is profiling Hispanics. The U.S. Justice Department found Arpaio led “a pervasive culture of discriminatory bias against Latinos” and one expert in the report said Arpaio led the worst racial profiling in U.S. history.

Pendergraph pandered further this week by saying he has “reason to be suspicious” about whether President Obama was born in the United States. “… Generally when there’s smoke, there’s got to be fire somewhere,” he said, even as he acknowledged “I haven’t seen the facts.”

The Charlotte Observer retracted their endorsement of Pendergraph.

A colonel in the Army Reserve who has spent significant time in Afghanistan, Killian understands security matters. He is earnest and forthright and would bring a sensible conservatism to Congress.

Richard Hudson, considered a leading Republican candidate in the race to unseat Democratic U.S. Rep. Larry Kissell in the 8th Congressional District, told a Tea Party group in Rowan County recently that “there’s no question President Obama is hiding something on his citizenship.”

Dr. John Whitley, one of Hudson’s opponents in Tuesday’s primary, declared Obama’s birth certificate a “poorly reproduced forgery” after comparing it to the Hawaiian birth certificate of one of his campaign workers.


“There is a tremendous amount of smoke here,” Whitley said. “In fact, it’s called a smoke screen.”

George Hutchins, a candidate in District 4, is convinced the birth certificate is a forgery. He promises if elected in the fall to help lead an investigation of the birth certificate, regardless of whether Obama is re-elected or not. The Republican winner in the 4th will face Democrat David Price in the general election.

Reached Friday, Hudson appeared to back away from earlier comments. He would not say whether he believes Obama was born in the United States, but noted that he had never seen the president’s birth certificate. If elected, he said he hopes to eliminate any future legitimacy issues by helping implement rules and procedures that’d verify the president was born in the United States.

Why do birthers go on Anderson Cooper? He just humiliates them.

Looked into the North Carolina Congressional race to see if Dr. Whitley had a chance. It does not seems so. He running for the Republican nomination for the 8th cong. dist. against 4 other repugs including the birfer lite Hudson. Hudson has been declared the favorite to win the primary. He is not favored to win against the Dem incumbent in the general even though the redistricting is more favorable to the GOP. The Dem won in 2010 even though the district was labeled a toss up and the repug had slightly better polling. The Dem seems a blue dog anyway.

Oh, today's election day in NC. Let's see how much birfing helps these guys.

After questioning the authenticity of President Barack Obama's birthplace, North Carolina congressional candidate Richard Hudson now says he's willing to give the state of Hawaii the benefit of the doubt and accept that the president was born in the United States.

"I could have expressed myself better," Hudson said in an interview at his home in Concord, N.C. "It's not an issue I've talked about before. Once I had time to really think about my words better and I was not in a forum with a one-minute clock running, I could have given a better answer that I accept the fact that the state of Hawaii says (Obama's birth certificate) is legitimate."

Like Hudson, Pendergraph has backed away from his earlier doubts about the president's birthplace. He said Friday he has no reason to disbelieve the Hawaii birth certificate.
