If you didn't read this NYMag piece, do it. Once you start, you'll have to read the whole darn thing until you finish. It's great.

Four decades after Watergate, there’s something that still nags at Ben Bradlee about Deep Throat.

Skeered. Kinda, sorta.

I was sitting here, minding my own business, cruising around the intertubes when I heard a gunshot. Or what I'd imagine a gunshot would sound like. Seemed pretty close, too (too damn close) ...

I shut the door and turned out the light and peered out the corner of the window. Several more "shots" in succession. I then went to the front door and cracked it open, and saw a flash of light with another BOOM coming from the street below. I thought maybe it was fireworks (but something bigger than a firecracker, for sure). It went on for about 10 minutes, a dozen or so more times. So I pulled a Zimmerman and called the police non-emergency number. Dispatcher said there were numerous calls for possible shots fired, and that 4 patrols had been sent to the neighborhood to check it out. This is a safe, pretty sedate area ... this is the most excitement we've had around here for a long time. I haven't seen any cop cars cruising by; I hope they found whatever the hell it was and took care of it.

So here I sit ... worried and nervous and wishing I could see what was going on out there (but too chicken to walk around and find out lol).

sorry for the babbling ... trying not to panic :)

Maybe you should have called Popeye instead of the cops?

I actually peeked under the bridge since you mentioned him, and I was amused to find that everyone else stopped talking to him the same time I did. And since his whole thing was saying "You are dumb!" whenever anyone said anything, he hasn't said a word since. I guess he hasnt been able to.

I guess it is ... I've not heard anything else for about the last 30 minutes. I told the dispatcher that I'd heard it coming from different areas, so I wonder if some kids were walking through popping off the fireworks as they went (or shooting lol).

I guess everything is ok now. It's times like this I worry about living alone. This is also the first time in 20 years I haven't had a cop or deputy living next door. My latest cop-neighbor moved a few months ago ... he's a great guy, and it was a plus that he parked his marked patrol car in front of my house. My little grandson thought that was the coolest thing evah. He set off his siren for Alex one day while I was sleeping ... I woke up clinging to the rafters, my daughter is running out of the house to see what's going on, and Alex is jumping up and down in the front yard yelling, "Again! Again!". Good times lol. He was here a few days ago, working on his yard. I hope that means he's thinking of moving back :)

Sounds like it may have been transformers. They can make you think you are in a war zone for a few minutes when they spark and explode.

Didn't think of that ... wouldn't the power have gone off tho'?

Whatever it was has passed. Now I feel silly for being all upset. Ugh.

Where I come from when you hear shots in the front of the house, you go to the back of the house and stay away from the doors and windows.

Haven't seen that term for a while. Lived up in Anchorage 76 to 80. I think PJs (Papa Johns) was on Spenard.

I would not feel silly. You did the right thing: let the police check out what it is. Firecrackers, transformers, or guns -- it's not up to you to decide whether or not it is dangerous.

The one time that I heard multiple gun shots I thought it was boards being dropped on concrete until the person beside me fell. Caution is not cowardice.

I remember spending a couple of days before Christmas wandering Luxembourg City, sharing a picnic with another lost American in a park gazebo while the snow swirled around us.

So Zorbas are you saying Luxembourg follows Napoleonic Code? I would have thought Gesetzbuch might have replaced it.
