Born in 1860, Low founded the Girl Scouts in 1912. The organization strives to teach girls self-reliance and resourcefulness. It also encourages girls to seek fulfillment in the professional world and to become active citizens in their communities. Since 1912, the Girl Scouts has grown into the largest educational organization for girls and has had over 50 million members. Low died in 1927. This year, the Girl Scouts celebrate their 100th Anniversary, calling 2012 “The Year of the Girl.”

This one made me snicker a little. Even though the reason is entirely legitimate (100th Anniversary of the GSA), still...

Hey! I am a human wormhole when it comes to Girl Scouts and Juliette Gordon Low. My first Girl Scout troop, Troop 6, was founded by her directly. Our scoutmaster was a Girl Scout in the very first troop, and her mother was Juliet Low's assistant scoutmaster.

You know about human wormholes, right? More at the link ....
http://www.npr.org/blogs/krulwich/2012/ ... c=fb&cc=fp

I've been doing our genealogy and have discovered a bunch of fascinating wormholes, reaching quite far back ... (coming from long-lived stock helps)

Oh Noes! I think you misunderstood!

I was thinking of the whole "The Girl Scouts are brain washing our young women to become sexually promiscuous lesbians" kerfluffle a few weeks ago. Then the founder of that fine organziation is honored in this fashion.

*makes not to self: remember to write the thought that came before also. Too. Might make more sense that way*

Yes I've eaten bunny. Fear me, oh mighty hunter. Picking the buckshot out of them while you are skinning them is a pain though...

I used hunt them with my father. And buckshot is a PITA if you're not a good shot. My apologies to any PETA members.

My grandma used to serve us northern city kids a platter of fried chicken mixed with chicken-fried bunny. I guess she figured we would need to be able to tell ourselves we probably ate chicken? So we wouldn't be sad about the bunnies?

I was never sad about the bunnies.

My grandma was the awesome. She never let a kid win at checkers, because it would harm their souls and because she was the most competitive person on the planet. She also once waited 20 years for the most convoluted revenge story I ever heard, which involved getting a job at a newspaper and other nonsense. I still don't know who the bad guy was, but I think it was a judge.

Anyway, with her as my grandmother, I was never going to be a softie. I dunno why she thought she had to fool us with the fried chicken.

I saw Madeleine Albright the other night on "The Daily Show"; I always knew she was intelligent, of course, but she's a fascinating speaker as well.

And of course, I'm proud of Pat Summitt (as I sit here in my "We Back Pat" tshirt - best $10 tshirt I ever bought. Buy one to support Alzheimer's research.) Another fascinating, inspiring woman.

Had a black bunny named "obsidian". Came home from school one day and he was dinner.

Had a sheep named "lady". One day she up and disappeared into the freezer.

Don't eat rabbit, mutton or lamb to this day.

Have no idea why I won't eat the duck my son keeps buying and preparing...

Edit: punctuation

Our school sent a group of students to a rural school in Vermont as part of a week long exchange. Not only did I show up in rural Vermont in winter in a skirt, pearls and candies slides, I played for hours with the bunnies in a hutch in the barn then spent dinner time crying as the family ate my new little friends.

Mary had a little lamb,
Whose fleece was white as snow,
And everywhere that Mary went,
The lamb was sure to go.

But Mary found the price of meat,
Had soared, which did not please her,
Tonight she's having leg of lamb,
The rest is in the freezer.

I think I read that in Mad Magazine when I was about 13-14.

Random thoughts in the random thread....

Since there isn't a shameless self-promotion thread that I can find, I'll tell y'all here that we won 1st, 2nd and fan favorite (3 of the possible 5 total prizes) at the Project Rezway recycled materials fashion show tonight.

We've had bunnies as pets off and on since I was kid and I've been a hunter most of my life, but I've never hunted (or eaten) rabbit. Loves me some frog legs though.

Yay, Juliette Lowe!!

Reading this forum makes me feel competely inadequate, until I get in conversations with normal people about the same subjects, and then I feel incredibly well-read because I've seen it all here and can have an informed opinion.

JAZZFEST!

Akshully, we have an "introduce yourself" topic where we like folks to tell us a little about themselves (not anything the birfoons can use to ID, though) and/or how they learned about birthers and/or found The Fogbow.
