I just had someone leave a comment on my blog. I've been on the internet for something like 20 years. This lady is something special. I'm pasting her comment below. I've responded, but if anyone else feels like taking a whack at her, the comments thread is here:
http://scientopia.org/blogs/authority/2 ... /#comments

Here's the mindboggling comment in question:

Quote:
First I would like to thank your wife for serving and many thanks to you, too. My husband served 14 years, Navy and National Guard. His time was up the same month as 9-11. I know it was hard for him to walk away, but as a family it was what we decided, talk about guilt! I have such respect and love for our soldiers. We are in the process right now of trying to stop a traveling musuem from visiting our childrens school, an "Enriching Lesson on Afghanistan's Culture"... What a slap in the face to our soldiers and their families. What could they possible teach our children about this country that hates Americans, Christians and Jews? We have tried for three weeks to get a copy of the lesson plan with no success! My husband and I will not give up, there is nothing positive about Afghanistan and their culture.
God's peace stay with you always.

Such ignorance!

And she wants not only her own kids but every kid in that school to remain ignorant.

Ignorance breeds intolerance, hate and fear.

I'd be fascinated to know what it is this person thinks we've been doing in Afghanistan for all these years.

I thank the husband for his service. And I am also thankful that he is a soldier, not a policymaker.

The word that popped into my mind was "chickenhawk". Well, the non-obscene word, anyway.

I belong to an organization that is dedicated to promoting peace through world understanding. Frankly, I can't think of any other way to achieve lasting peace.

I guess this woman prefers the rinse and repeat of declared and undeclared war.

Mike, I'm grateful for your wife's service and for the sacrifices your family makes for our national security and for world peace. I'm also grateful that our political and military leaders understand that we need to win hearts and minds, not just firefights.

I certainly understand how you feel, Mike. I taught a course in comparative religion for five years. The content was totally objective, but even after your experience, you would be amazed at how often I was accused of trying to "heathenize" good "Christian" children by exposing them in some depth to other beliefs. Those experiences gave me a better understanding than anything else about why our education system is flatlining, and it ain't because of the kids.

That was probably the greatest course I ever taught, and I loved it, but it was eliminated as part of a "backwards to basics" movement.

Yeah lol.

My brother is in special forces group, and on 9/11 was on base at a doc's appointment. At that point, my brother had plenty of time in that he could have retired and watched from the sidelines as this unfolded. But he stayed in --- it never even occurred to him to walk away; and to be perfectly honest, I've lost track of the number of times he's been sent to Iraq and Afghanistan since.

Mike, Emma, and all Fogbowers who have served themselves or have family serving, thank you. I honor and respect your sacrifice and you and your loved ones are in my thoughts and prayers.

I believe tolerance of others' spiritual beliefs, or lack thereof, is one of the hardest things for the human heart and mind to learn. As a species we still have a long way to go, but it's really heartwarming to see by the evidence on this thread that some of us are making the journey.

Me too. Also.

The reply to MikeD's blog post was indeed bigoted and small-minded, and his reply actually rather diplomatic. But for those who haven't visited his blog and read the original post, I recommend it.
