He got the number of Communists wrong. It is 57, has always been 57, and will always be 57.

West is repeating a meme that any member of the Progressive Caucus is a socialist. I saw it repeated often in the last two cycles with respect to Pete DeFazio (OR CD-4 D), even though he's a borderline Blue Dog.

This document may be the source of Allen West's claim about 70 "Communists" in the U.S. Congress. Notice that it is about the Democratic Socialists of America, not the Communist Party. RWNJ's do not admit that there is a difference. Any organization that favors redistribution of income, dignified work, community empowerment, global non-violence, environmental justice, social justice, and democratic participation must be Communist. Note that the list of members is out of date.

This is just a listing of Congressional Progressive Caucus members. No way many of these mainstream Dems would be caught dead self-identifying as Socialists of any kind, Democratic or not. This is the DSA's fantasy, put to use by the right wing.

As I view it.

I don't know the structure of Socialist parties in the U.S., but I would not be surprised to find that the DSA is marginal.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Why on earth did they invite him in the first place? This isn't the first time he's done or said awful things. He's a proven liar. OTOH, they did invite him, so they should have let him speak. The crowd booing him would've made for some great footage.

He's talking about the under 65 people who manage to get through the process and qualify for disability (if they have paid into it enough quarters). Like Medicare, it is not a freebie. You pay for it out of every paycheck if you are going to be covered.

Here are the numbers from the Congressional Budget Office. Compare with what he says. It does not compute.

What does he have against insurance? and how is it in anyway like slavery? We can choose to pool our risks or not?

Regular Social Security is a pension scheme and is a different fund. The number of people retiring will be increasing rapidly as Boomers retire (if they can afford to). Using 1946 as the baseline for the Baby Boom, the Boomers started retiring in 2008 and started signing up for Medicare in 2011. It has not been a secret for the last 60 years that there was going to be a big bump in the numbers right about now. It would actually help the employment figures if more people could afford to retire and make openings for younger people.

Mimi, that is priceless! I have no doubt that the irascible and quite predictable Mr. West got his number (of communists in the Progressive wing of the Democratic Party) in a similar way!

It appears that Joe Walsh and Allen West love saying the most outrageous things to get free publicity and air time. Both are running for re-election in their districts and realize that this ain't 2010 anymore. They realize that they can't afford the big money ads on TV so this is the alternative. What pitiful fools...
