This I think is one of those moments where politicians forget that in this 2012 information age everything is going to be remembered.
It wasn't long ago where a politician really could give a wink wink nod nod to a constituency and act with reasonable belief that others weren't ever going to find out about it. She made those comments and lets be honest, she meant every one of them at the time...then it made news and she had to back off, at least a little.
Of course, if she was honest, she would have answered that her constituents are wrong in this instance. The fact that some of them say he wasn't born in the US doesn't mean she has to pander to them. If a number of them asked her about UFO rumors she wouldn't say "Well I guess I have to believe in UFOs now."
I respectfully disagree. I believe Congresswoman Hartzler is just stringing the birthers along (and doing a very good job at it). She may be a freshman congress critter but she appears to have studied former Congressman (and now Senator) Roy Blunt well.
I don't mean she meant them at the time as necessarily "She believed what she said." I mean that she absolutely meant to speak those birther lines as a deliberate action to let them know she was "One of them". I absolutely agree that most politicians these days that talk about birtherism aren't doing it because they believe it (although there are likely a few), but rather because they think it gives them some sort of political advantage.
I'm surprised birthers fall for it - I mean they went absolutely gaga over Rep. Allan West, who flaunted with birtherism during his campaign, then dropped it with a thud as soon as he got into office.
Much like Sheriff Arpaio, when a politician, sheriff, etc. starts talking birther and says "Someone ought to do something!", but they don't, actually, try and do anything, you know they're just playing the birthers, because unlike the birther
massesminimuses, they're in a position where they COULD do something if they wanted to, but don't.
