Andrew Sullivan's The Dish Predisposed For Pop

Quote:
Evolution may explain why we get songs stuck in our head:
Quote:
Modern humans have been around for some 200,000 years, but written language may have been invented only around 5,000 years ago, Levitin says. So through much of human history people memorised important information through songs. That practice continues today in cultures with strong oral traditions. [Daniel Levitin, an expert in the neuroscience of music] says the combination of rhythm, rhyme, and melody provides reinforcing cues that make songs easier to remember than words alone.

Cari Nierenberg recently identified some other possible causes:
Quote:
The most common one was music exposure, either recently hearing a tune or repeatedly hearing it. A second reason was memory triggers, meaning that seeing a particular person or word, hearing a specific beat, or being in a certain situation reminds you of a song. The third reason for earworms [is] your emotional frame of mind, or "affective states." Feeling stressed, surprised or happy when you hear a song may make it stick in your head. And a fourth cause was "low attention states." A wandering mind, whether from daydreaming or dreams at night, can set off this involuntary musical imagery.

Sculptor Elizabeth Catlett dies in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Sculptor and printmaker Elizabeth Catlett, a U.S. expatriate renowned for her dignified portrayals of African-American and Mexican women who was barred from her home country for political activism during the McCarthy era, has died. She was 96.

Maria Antonieta Alvarez, Catlett's daughter-in-law, said the artist died Monday in a house in Cuernavaca, Mexico, where she had lived since 1976.

Born in Washington, D.C., Catlett moved to Mexico in 1946, became friends with great Mexican muralist Diego Rivera and others in his circle, and married Mexican artist Francisco Mora.

She became known for her commitment to winning greater rights for blacks, women and workers in the United States and her adopted country. Catlett witnessed almost every important artistic and social movement of the 20th century and traveled in some of the same illustrious circles as the great American artist Jacob Lawrence and poet Langston Hughes.

According to NPR radio broadcast, a CBS news spokesman has announced that Mike Wallace has died.

Edit: New York Times April 8, 2012 "Mike Wallace, ’60 Minutes’ Pioneer, Dies"

Quote:
Mike Wallace, a pioneer of American broadcasting who confronted leaders and liars for the newsmagazine “60 Minutes” for four decades, has died, CBS News said Sunday morning. He was 93.

His death was announced on CBS. Bob Scheiffer, the host of “Face the Nation,” said that Mr. Wallace died on Saturday night in New Haven, Connecticut. “His family was with him,” Mr. Scheiffer said.

Mr. Wallace had been ill for several years.

A bit of an intersection here.

Morley Safer did the segment on Kinkade and his industry. The banner announcing Mike Wallace's passing flashes above the video.

His son is a Dick.

That factoid was one of those Duh moments for W2 and me. Never connected Mike and Chris Wallace, even though the genes run strong in that family. Much like discovering a couple of years ago that REDRUM is murder spelled backwards. (Never saw the movie.)

When I was in law school a close friend dated Chris and knew Mike. When I first started practicing I got interviewed over lunch by Mike at Casa Escobar, a Mexican restaurant (still there) in Santa Monica, as background for a story he was doing.

Chris was -- and still is -- a jerk. Mike was a real nice guy.

RIP Mike.

Thomas Kinkade was an overweening, God bothering asshole. The art world is better off. Plus I think his family killed him, unless he suicided. I met the clown a few years back. Total asshole. Sort of a male Sharon Meroni with a paintbrush.

Mike Wallace was, by all accounts, a good guy and a great Journalist. Didn't prevent him from raising an asshole, though.

I'm a bit grouchy this evening. [-(

I read (in the Atlantic maybe?) that Kinkade "marked his territory" by urinating on competitors such a Disney statue. Lovely person.

The term "God bothering" is new to me. Introduced in my world on Easter Sunday! Cool. So does it mean someone that bothers others about God or someone that bothers God or something else?

Best definition I can give ya is, "someone who bothers God through excessive prayer or public reference."

Tim Tebow is a God botherer.

Full disclosure? I think I first heard the term on PolitiJab, and it struck a chord, so it's roots in my psyche are here.

That makes sense. Folks that think God is concerned with their every move and who pray for guidance before making a left on Main are annoying even to those of us who believe that there is a creator.

Quit botherin' God y'all. He's got important things to do.

From uses I found with a search of the term, it looks like it could be used for both types. Here's the definition of a God botherer:

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/God_botherer

It seems to be used more in British and Australian for those who bother other people talking about God. But there are sermons with the title which are based on parables in Luke that seem to say that if you don't get what you want, just keep praying and asking until you get what you want.......like the widow who pesters the judge until he gets tired of her pleadings and gives in to get rid of her. Hmmmm.....now who does that remind you of.
