The people who do these things don't think about getting caught after the first few times.

The first time is the hardest. It gets a little easier for the next several embezzlements. And then, it's like a free flowing spigot of money and you don't think about it any more except to make sure you keep the spigot open and flowing to your needs.

Ponzi schemes work the same way. Many of them don't begin with bad intentions, just bad luck an integrity flaw. But that pile of money over there looks very attractive. (It's also the biggest downfall of lawyers with client trust accounts. Many lawyers seem to think the money belongs to them. A professionally fatal conceit.).

Sad to report another one has fallen and for unexplainable reasons.

Ex-presidential candidate John Edwards has a serious health condition that requires treatment and limits on his travel, sources told NBC News on Friday. It had been reported that the judge delayed Edwards' campaign-finance trial and described Edwards' condition as life-threatening. But a source told NBC News that the condition is an arrhythmia that might require implantation of a pacemaker. Another source said the judge described Edwards' condition as serious.

And The Associated Press phrased it this way: Federal Judge Catherine Eagles did not disclose the exact nature of Edwards' illness Friday or what procedure he needed. However, she said the two-time presidential candidate had "three episodes" and indicated his condition could be life-threatening if left untreated.

Earlier story: A judge on Friday agreed to delay the campaign-finance trial of ex-presidential candidate John Edwards after his attorney presented two letters detailing a life-threatening condition that will require surgery next month.

A cardiologist for the 58-year-old ex-North Carolina senator wrote two letters about his condition to Judge Catherine Eagles who talked about them Friday during a hearing to consider whether the trial would go ahead later this month. She delayed it until at least March 26.

John Edwards’ defunct presidential campaign must repay the U.S. Treasury $2.1 million within 30 days, the Federal Election Commission said in a report released Friday.

The report says that in his pursuit of the 2008 campaign Democratic nomination, Edwards received a total of $ 12,882,878 in matching funds from the United States Treasury -- $2,136,507 more than his entitlement.

The commission rejected arguments made by Edwards’ lawyers who said that problems with the commission led to an incorrect finding on the amount of the entitlement.

"After careful consideration, the commission determines that none of these arguments has merit," the commissioners wrote in the document.

Lawyers for Edwards' campaign committee said they won't contest the commission's decision, according to a report on Philly.com.

Should the vote pass, Patterson, who was elected as a Democrat and changed his party affiliation to independent on Monday, would become the first sitting lawmaker to be expelled in more than 20 years.

A 33-page report released Monday by independent attorneys appointed to investigate Patterson included allegations that he offered to trade a lobbyist sex for a vote, used marijuana, verbally abused staff and other lawmakers, and physically abused his ex-girlfriend. Some of the allegations are unattributed and contain scant detail.

Felony charges related to election fraud have touched the 2008 race for the highest office in the land.

Prosecutors in South Bend, Ind., filed charges Monday against four St. Joseph County Democratic officials and deputies as part of a multiple-felony case involving the alleged forging of Democratic presidential primary petitions in the 2008 election, which put then-candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton on the Indiana ballot.

The officials are accused of taking part in a scheme to fake signatures and names on the primary petitions needed to run for president. Court papers say the plan was hatched by local Democratic Party officials inside the local party headquarters.

Five women who worked for Vito J. Lopez, the assemblyman at the center of a broadening sexual harassment scandal, described in interviews an atmosphere of sexual pressure and crude language in his office, with frequent unwanted advances by him and others, requests for provocative dress, personal questions about their boyfriends and fears of reprisals if they complained.

By their accounts, Mr. Lopez, 71, a Brooklyn Democrat, told some women not to wear bras to work. He requested they wear short skirts and high heels. He gave them cash to buy jewelry and complimented them on their figures, giving special attention to those he called “well endowed.” ...

“He would comment on a shirt I was wearing and say ‘I’d like it better if you didn’t have a bra on,’ ” said one of the former staff members. “That was something he brought up quite a bit.”

The sexual harassment scandal that has been roiling New York’s political world began last Friday, when the Assembly’s ethics committee substantiated claims that Mr. Lopez harassed two women. Former congressional aide accused of drugging and sexually assaulting women

A former senior congressional aide was indicted this week in D.C. Superior Court on charges that he sexually assaulted two women after drugging them with a sedative that he allegedly put in their drinks.

Donny Ray Williams Jr., 36, who served as staff director for a Senate subcommittee and worked in the offices of several members of Congress, gave at least one woman Ambien and assaulted her while she was unconscious, according to court papers.

Williams was charged with 10 counts of first- and second-degree sexual abuse and related charges in connection with attacks that authorities said occurred between July and December 2010. During that time, according to his profile on the LinkedIn Web site, Williams was staff director of a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs subcommittee.

A third woman made similar allegations against Williams, attorneys and Williams said, and a fourth woman said that he threatened her. As a result of that fourth allegation, Williams was indicted on one count of threatening to injure or kidnap a person. Additional details of that charge were not made public.

Outside the courthouse Friday, Williams said the allegations are “absolutely and completely false.

Additionally, Williams appears to have worked in the Obama administration as the general deputy assistant secretary for congressional and intergovernmental relations in the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He held this position from April 2009 – October 2010, or 1 year and 7 months.
