Yoo Hoo! Crafty Ladies! My new project well, it's really a been sitting in the yarn queue for months project. I made a small version of the throw as a baby gift for my niece. The colors matched her nursery. I decided to make one for my office/craft room with a pillow to match. Super-easy pattern goes super-fast.

And for the knitters, here's an idea for those Christmas gift cards. I'm going to double the width and knit on two double-ended needles like a sock so I have to sew only the bottom.

Your niece is going to be a very lucky girl!!! I love how you use the term "super-fast." I've tried a few of those. I think they be finished in a year or two -- if I'm lucky. :(( :((

Beauty, lioness. Will you show us when you finish? I want to see your colors.

I found my old weaving teacher while looking for something else recently. I heard he had passed away a few years ago, so I'm thrilled to learn otherwise. I may start again, but it had better be soon. :geezer: Gay Kurdish weaving teachers are not, contrary to popular opinion, a dime a dozen.

tjh's suggestion to try a side of pink slime with my glued meat sent me off into a bit of research on the practices of the modern food industry. I think it is time for another Upton Sinclair and The Jungle 21st Century. One does not have to be a Socialist to write this new book. Simply being a human be-ing will suffice.

Sinclair's book was rejected by six publishers, so he decided to self-publish the book. Running ads in The Appeal to Reason, he got enough orders to persuade Doubleday to publish it. The rest of the story is widely known, except to those who honor Sinclair Lewis as the author.

A reader for Macmillan, one of the publishers that Sinclair approached without success, got it almost right. This is why we need another Upton Sinclair:
Quote:
"I advise without hesitation and unreservedly against the publication of this book which is gloom and horror unrelieved. One feels that what is at the bottom of his fierceness is not nearly so much desire to help the poor as hatred of the rich."

The part that he got wrong was that a desire to help the poor means to fight against the class warfare being waged by the 1% -- and not even by all of them.

Well that was exciting. Dark skies, weird clouds going in different directions, funnel clouds, pea-sized hail, storm cells popping up one after another kept us in the basement for 2 hours, the longest I can remember. Still some thunder around. But all's well, other than the cats are extremely bent out of shape. Maisy rattled around in her carrier so much she tipped it over. Then she was really mad. At one point I sneaked upstairs for some food for them. I guess I'd better put together a go-bag with some treats and a bottle of rescue remedy, and blankets. We were cold. The good news is my weather alert radio works and the county emergency team was on the siren switch seconds after NOAA issued the tornado warning. We get about 3 or 4 a year. thanks for all ya'lls concern, such nice people.

The latest email listed as unavailable valium, ativan, and versed ... and suggested we find another medication to use as a sedative. And what would that be, pray tell? Monitored units and palliative care are now using propofol (think Micheal Jackson) in place of the above, but other floors are just SOL. Not that it matters; word is that our stock of propofol is falling short, too.

For going on a year now, we've been out of (or have had severely limited quantities) of analgesics such as morphine, dilaudid and fentanyl, even toradol ... one email suggested we use pain relieving "alternatives" such as imagery and diversion, and then they did approve use of IV tylenol (limited to 24 hours). Whoopty-do. Lidocaine is out ... only certain procedures in ER are approved; suggestions for alternatives included using a "freeze" spray for minor suturing and the like. The email this week added atropine, valium, fentanyl, kytril, lidocaine, ativan, magnesium, mannitol, reglan, lopressor, versed, morphine, TPN --- including separate mineral and fat infusions, zofran and nystatin oral liquid, benadryl. Remaining in short (or no) supply are various antibiotics and a number of cancer chemotherapy drugs.

I know of a number of patients who have had their admissions for chemo cancelled because of this, and I'm seeing those who DO manage to get treated are having side effects that could be controlled if only we had these drugs available.

It's absolutely ridiculous. Sure, over the course of my career in the last 29 years I've seen shortages here and there, but nothing to this extent, and of those shortages that did occur, they were resolved rather quickly. I feel like I'm working in a third-world country. And I have to say (putting on my tinfoil hat), I do think the passage of the healthcare bill has a lot to do with this. It's just too much of a coincidence that we're seeing this happen at this level since the bill passed. I really wish the USAG would investigate the true source behind this issue. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that these companies are working in concert to create these "shortages".

Holy batshit!

So many of these meds cause physiological dependance; if a patient can't get their meds, they go into physiological withdrawal. So many of these drugs are absolutely necessary for treating potentially fatal diseases.

You make an interesting point about the healthcare bill passage. I hadn't considered that.

Tonight, in Southern Oregon, it is predicted that we may get snow on the valley floor (sea level) by tomorrow morning. And over 3 inches of rain.

Isn't it spring? All of the Daffodils that popped up last week are going to die!! :((

This week is finals week at the local colleges and univ; my college is 1,000 feet above sea level, and may get 2-6 inches of snow. To get to the college, one has to drive up a steep hill. The city buses won't go up the hill if there is too much snow/ice. Will there be a snow day during finals week?

ETA: Just turned on the news. We may get snow all week. Weird.

I luvs snow.... :xo

A friend's office in Cambridge has gone to their summer dress code. Shorts are allowed.

In New England, many buildings have HVAC systems that must be manually changed from AC to Heat. That requires a trip from the HVAC company. We can't switch our building yet because there WILL be nights coming up with lows below 40o, and that strains the system too much. AC is set to switch over in late April.

It's windows open time for a while. I'm having flashbacks to the dive apartment we lived in when we first got married. Noisy, traffic fumes, uncomfortably hot nights. Now if we only had a second-hand mattress on the floor and working joints... 8>

Same weather report from a bit further south, Storrs, CT. Trees are in first bloom; the willows have leaves; and the students are wearing shorts except when boys are sunning shirtless by Mirror Lake. In the meantime, my friend on the Oregon coast has faced a string of storms with intense rain, considerable wind, and some snow. There is still an Accuweather "Weather Alarm" for that region.

One explanation appears to be a continuing La Nina of unusual strength. This is connected to a weird pattern of the jet stream, which currently dips into northern Texas and then goes north so that none of New England is above the jet stream. Almost none of Michigan is above it.

Awww... but you were sleeping like a baby when I drove through the town where I always hear the tune of dueling banjos. Snow was falling heavy there, btw. You can lurves the snow if you like. It isn't so bad if you get snowed in with someone, too. Also. Otherwise, not so much.

I need a couple hours of VFR weather this weekend or I'll be losing some use it or lose it hours. So far, weather man says yes. Next week, more crummy weather.

My sister sent me a picture Sunday of her family skiing in Oregon - said it was 23 and snowing on the mountain, but 36 and a rain/snow mix back in Eugene. On Sunday I was at a track meet in Philly in 70 degree weather in a t-shirt.

She called me this morning at 4 am her time to report that it was snowing heavily. She that that the ground didn't have much snow accumulation because of all the rain the day before, but that the tree branches and fence posts already had a couple inches. She texted back at 7 her time that they had lost power and phone because trees were coming down and it was still snowing heavily. I slept Tuesday night with the windows open and it is supposed to be 81 here tomorrow.

I am soooo glad to be on the east coast right now and not in Eugene with her.

Good luck to all the Oregonians - I hope you (and your blooming plants) survive the snow!

The weather here in my secret, undisclosed bunker has be been great -- no real winter at all. I'm just worried that we'll have a summer that is a repeat of last year -- it was the hottest summer ever recorded here. We had over 60 days of 100+ degrees -- and nine of those days were over 110 degrees.
