Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday that Al Jazeera is gaining more prominence in the U.S. because it offers "real news" -- something she said American media were falling far short of doing.

Clinton was speaking before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and she said the U.S. is losing the "information war" in the world. One of the reasons she cited for this was the quality of channels like Al Jazeera:

Quote:
We're the most technologically advanced country in the world, so slowly but surely we've been trying to take back the airwaves in Afghanistan against Taliban with the most primitive kind of communication equipment. Now, take that as one example where I don't think we were very competitive, and we have worked like crazy to change that, and then go to the most extreme where you've got a global, a set of global networks, that Al Jazeera has been the leader in, that are literally changing people's minds and attitudes.

Quote:
And like it or hate it, it [Al Jazeera] is really effective. And in fact viewership of Al Jazeera is going up in the United States because it's real news. You may not agree with it, but you feel like you're getting real news around the clock instead of a million commercials and, you know, arguments between talking heads and the kind of stuff that we do on our news which, you know, is not particularly informative to us, let alone foreigners.

I agree!

I've been starting to really like Al Jazeera. Of course, we WILL corrupt them eventually.

Tomorrow, on American Idolater...

Hillary Clinton's Al Jazeera Comments Draw Attention Of U.S. Media
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/0 ... 31788.html

Quote:
Fox News Channel's Michael Clemente said he was "surprised and kind of curious" by Clinton's remarks.

"We've got leadership issues there, the safety of people, the safety of our own people," said Clemente, senior vice president for news. "Some big issues. All of a sudden there are headlines about Al-Jazeera versus the news in this country? It's just surprising. Curious more than surprising."

Representatives from CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC news all declined comment Friday on what Clinton said.

But former CNN Washington bureau chief Frank Sesno agreed with her assessment.

I probably don't utter this sentence very often.

I completely agree with Hillary.

American "news" is a fucking joke, and I've been relying on al Jazeera for real news for years, because you don't get real news from American corporate propaganda broadcasts.

I thought I was losing my mind...

Seems like I was being given credit for posting stuff just about a week ago that I couldn't recall being involved with in that time frame. But no, it's from March 2011, not 2012. And yeah, I do vaguely remember that far back!

Welcome abdul khan. And thanks for resurrecting this year-old thread. :-?
