Loren, that post is hilarious. I hope you don't mind that I tweeted it to a couple of folks. :P

In the wake of the Posse's findings, I encourage you to watch this video by Errol Morris (the play button is in the bottom left corner of the picture at the top of the article):

The Umbrella Man

The link to the NYT site did not work for me, but this Daily Motion video may be the same video:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xmmhck_the-umbrella-man-errol-morris-for-the-new-york-times_shortfilms?start=76#from=embed

Incidentally, rain is not the only reason for carrying an umbrella in Texas. Protection from the sun is one such additional reason. In fact, "ladies" used to carry parasols all the time to protect their delicate skin. They may use an SPF-40 product now.

The 1978 testimony that the umbrella involved the Court of St. James and Neville Chamberlain is weird.

Tink is so right...a cautionary tale, indeed. Something you think is so odd, so sinister that it absolutely MUST be nefarious...can turn out to be nothing, after all.

I love Errol Morris. A Thin Blue Line is one of my all time favorite documentaries.

Pat Buchanan Moves to Fox, Immediately Makes Birther Joke

No, he doesn't have a show on Fox (yet), but Pat Buchanan made an appearance on Sean Hannity's show and said this (at around 2:38 in the video below):

Sean, you know, a couple of months ago Obama was so low in the polls even the Kenyans were saying he was born in the United States.

In Positive Economic Sign, Republicans Starting to Say Obama Wasn’t Born in US Again
S & P Birther Index Posts Big Gains

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report) – In what some experts are calling a strong indicator of improvement in the economy, Republicans in recent weeks have begun renewing their claims that President Barack Obama was not born in the United States.

Image

While most economists agree that any significant improvement in the US economy is generally accompanied by an uptick in GOP questions about Mr. Obama’s place of birth, there is now an econometric tool for measuring the increase in those claims: the so-called S & P Birther Index.

The Birther Index, established in 2008, measures the occurrences of such words as “birth certificate,” “Kenya,” and “wasn’t born here” in Republican statements about the President, and has proven to be a surprisingly reliable tool for tracking improvements in the economy.

Harland Dorinson, the economist who devised the S & P Birther Index, said that as the economy recovers the index also shows a strong surge in statements questioning the President’s Christianity.

As you probably know, umbrellas were first developed in the ancient Egypt and the near east to protect the user from the sun. It was a millennium or two before they finally used to keep protect one from the rain.

I always got a kick out of the fact that, as an member of the Air Force, we were allowed to carry an umbrella when it rained. Army personnel, at the time, were prohibited from carrying an umbrella. (I believe that has recently been changed.) I can recall many a joint service meeting during a rainy day where members of the Air Force showed up reasonably dry while the Army folks were soaked to the bone, dripping water every where. I guess it was more "manly" to be catch your death of pneumonia than to carry an umbrella when it's raining.

Addie has a bit from Ed Kilgore's post on the 3-state ppp poll.

Elder Tea Party Birthers And Rushers

Quote:
The most startling, to me at least, is the extraordinary support for both birtherism and Rush among self-ID’d Tea Party members in all three states. They reject Obama’s U.S. nativity by margins of 56/25 in OH, 62/22 in TN, and 54/24 in GA. Tea Folk also do not seem to share the issues with Limbaugh’s slut-shaming, approving of him by margins of 73/11 in OH, 72/12 in TN, and 69/14 in GA. Evangelicals are just as likely as Tea Folk (with whom, of course, they overlap greatly) to be birthers (50/25 in OH, 53/24 in TN, and 50/25 in GA); but do support Rush a bit less (54/23 in OH, 51/26 in TN, and 53/25 in GA). Indeed, it’s probable the varying sizes of the evangelical segment of the electorate (43% in OH, 66% in TN and 55% in GA) largely explain the statewide variations on these questions.

The other number that jumps out from the crosstabs are pretty notable generational splits. 18-45 year-olds reject birtherism by 54/27 in OH and 48/28 in GA, though in heavily evangelical TN they favor it 46/37. Over-65 voters are big birtherists everywhere: 44/34 in OH, 52/28 in TN and 47/30 in GA. Younger voters only narrowly approve of Rush in all three states, while over-65s give him near-majority support.

It gets…..well, I can't say "better".

Quote:
"And our 2nd amendment Rights to bear Arms gives each man and woman the power to uphold their law in a time of crisis in a organizes manner in militia as all able bodied people have military and police power in a time of crisis. Before WE THE PEOPLE are forced to invoke our 2ndAmendment right."

Sounding threaty alright. Actually it sounds like an insurrection and call to civil war.

Quote:
"As of this Day MARCH 19, 2012 All federal Employees will be removed from state & local offices with nothing more then the cloths they need to leave with. All material of the Federal Government belongs too in a whole the American People. O RLY???

Quote:
"As of this Day it is the SWORN duty of the closest law enforcement officer to arrest and detain Barack Hussein Obama and to be held in a safe secure undisclosed jail until trial can be set up. And High Treason Charges pressed with the DEATH SENTENCE mandatory if found guilty"

And today's visit from the Secret Service goes to….

Quote:
"As of this day All Paper work if any at all even exist in the vaults of Hawaii will be turned over. All Hawaii officials involved in this Act of High Treason will be arrested immediately and will stand trail for HIGH TREASON with the DEATH SENTENCE mandatory if found guilty."

Oh, it just gets better and better.

Quote:
"As of this Day all high ranking officials in the FBI, CIA, SS and all other Federal agency’s will step down and await charges if any are to by filed.

As of this Day ALL high ranking military officials that have never Questioned Their Commander and chiefs Authority of never being a Natural Born American Citizen will step down and will report to the brig until or otherwise told. within the ranks of the Unit they commanded a New Commander will be picked. And the citizens will Have final say. Until a New President of the United States is Elected."

Let me know how that works for you, skippy. Somehow I doubt that "failure to stage a military coup" is covered as a crime under the UCMJ

good catch!

Offtopic :
i was a long-time reader of the magazine (still have many back issues, including the first american issue)

but i was "meh" on the album and movie. i thought "american pop", which debuted a few months earlier, was more successful.

i have a decent (imho) "just the cream, thanks" collection of heavy metal music, but lean towards punk and hardcore, whose hayday lasted through the 80s, before it gave way to grunge/goth/industrial/etc ...

Obama Impersonator Dies of ‘Natural Causes’
Quote:
The Los Angeles Times describes impersonator Steve Bridges as the actor who impersonated President George W. Bush. Most recently, Bridges impersonated President Obama. Bridges was 48 and is said to have died of “natural causes.” It’s strange that two young men — Andrew Breitbart and Bridges — both died from “natural causes” and both were associated with President Obama in some way.

It’s strange that a number of articles do not mention that Bridges also impersonated Obama. I found it curious. In fact, a lot of press releases led with him being a Bush impersonator, which he was. Bush embraced Bridges. In 2006, he appeared alongside the real President George W. Bush at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, mimicking the president by voicing the president’s inner thoughts during Bush’s presidential speech.

Then are some sites that claim that Obama was “offended.” There’s no way to verify this claim. Anyway, here’s a clip of Bridges doing his Obama impersonation. Keep in mind that Bridges is white:

http://godfatherpolitics.com/4043/obama ... al-causes/

 Bridges is white! It all makes sense now. :-?

Seriously, the comic failed & the comments are crazy.

Looks like a white guy impersonating George Bush impersonating Barack Obama. (With a face prosthetic.) Unconvincing.

However, R.I.P.

I don't know if it's of any use but the earliest appearance of the "born in Kenya" motif that I've seen is 23rd May 2007 although I'm not sure to what extent we want to include these early outliers.

Quote:
If Obama bin HUSSEIN al Barack was born in Kenya, how can he run for president in the US?

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070523133208AA6pPKM

I notice that you've included reference to "PA Madison's" 18th November 2008. While it's probably not that significant from the point of view of the timeline the present version at the Federalist Blog is different from the original. The original included an incorrect quote from early Virginia citizenship law (one word was changed which completely changed the meaning). When he was caught out , mainly at Volokh, he amended the article to remove it without as far as I know admiting the error.
