Here's something that puzzled me:

Our problems can be solved. Our challenges can be met. The path we offer may be harder, but it leads to a better place.

The comparison is stated vaguely, but it lends itself to an interpretation that Romney is offering us an easier though ultimately less rewarding path. Is it smart to say that? Is it true?He repeated it at the end:

Yes, our path is harder – but it leads to a better place. Yes our road is longer – but we travel it together. We don’t turn back. We leave no one behind.

I think he was saying that he isn't offering any quick fixes or solutions. To get out of this, everyone has to work together. It will take time, but it's what we have to do.
I have learned silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet, strange, I am ungrateful to those teachers.

Oh, I agree, but "hard" would have said that. Saying "harder" -- and saying it twice -- seems to suggest that it's harder than some alternative, and I'm having trouble filling that gap.

I was reading about President Obama’s speech on Raw Story and got to see some of the video, (cuz we don’t have teevee so I didn’t see it live) and yes, I too could see Orly’s head spinning like the little girl in the Exorcist when O started talking about citizenship! =)) Scanning the comments I was happy to see all the positive feedback, then I saw this comment:

PosideonIt is Deja Vu all over again... including the insults they hurled at FDR... he's a communist, a socialist, a traitor to his class and so on... It took FDR more than one term to get the economy under control too.

The post had a link to this video of FDR from 76 years ago. ( :geezer: prolly saw it live  ) And it really is true that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Amazing!

Thanks Realist! Maybe that's the middle name I have been thinking about.

we hear nothing.

My grandfather, whom I never met, hated FDR. He forbade his family to like him  . He even kicked my dad out of the house when he was 15 for expressing his admiration. Dad joined the Army.

My grandmother was surreptitiously recorded as many of his Fireside Chats as she was able on a wire recorder. When I was 14 my bro and I were rummaging in Nana's attic and found the box. She played on of them for us. It was grainy and scratchy but as we listened I saw Nana's stern face relax a bit. When it was over she said," He was a good man. I never understood why Jim hated him so."

I don't remember the specifics of the speeches I heard, but I do remember the care in his voice and the hope he was holding out to people in massive pain.

Thank you, realist! Gonna use that all over the place.

Great story. I'm sure all of it is what run down his health. Anyway Bill Murray is playing him in a movie coming up.

Any thoughts that Gov. Granholm might be a judicial appointee have evaporated. Her speech, while fun, was much too political.

I'm glad Emma posted it though because last night when Gov. Granholm was delivering the speech, my husband was bitchin' about her delivery so loudly that I couldn't hear the speech  . (He did agree with the content though).

I like what Gov. Granholm had to say, but I think she might have had a bit too much caffeine before she said it. :-?

Gov. Granholm should have given Caroline Kennedy half of whatever she was on. That girl makes a rock look animated.

I just want to know what the blue collar folks in the swing states thought about it. Did they get it? Will they get it? They are the ones who have to be moved to the Obama side of the scales.

The bounce has begun:

Gallup, as usual, posted its latest poll findings at 1 pm--and found a big bounce for Obama from this year's convention, adding to yesterday's indication. They show a very strong one-day 3% hike in his approval rating to 52%--his highest mark in many months. This means that he gained a whopping 7% in just the past three days.

This uptick in these two indicators stands in contrast to tracking during the Republican Convention, during which there was no discernible bounce on the ballot tracking.

I think Granholm has always been like that, dramatic sweeping gestures and loud voice. Men don't like that.

The 15 people in my family room thought she had a couple of drinks in her. Good speech, but she was embarrassing, IMO.

She was lively, there's no doubt about that. By contrast she made Clint Eastwood look like The Curse From The Mummy's Tomb.

I can see why people might not like it, but I thought she was terrific and her speech rousing.
