Many mammals and some birds play. Is there an evolutionary explanation for this?

I interpret it differently, Tollie. (Since I am not anthropomorphizing it.) To me it looks as if the pigeon is trying to pick apart the ring for some delicious treat inside (smells, maybe?) and the best place to do that is on what the bird thinks is a flat surface at the top of the roof. And the bird keeps sliding down.

So I vote no play.

I have seen crows and ravens do a lot of this that seem to be for the pure joy of it. One day, there was one who had a small stick that he flew up, dropped and swooped to catch. He did this over and over. I have seen groups of them do similar things.

Jan. 5, 2011 Wired Science Clever Crows Use Tools in New Way Video at link.
Quote:
With the simple act of using twigs to poke a rubber spider, New Caledonian crows may have become the first birds to join an exclusive cognitive class.

Using tools in multiple ways, and not just to get food, was once considered a singularly human ability. Then chimpanzees, other primates and elephants proved able. But if flexible tool use wasn’t uniquely human, it did seem limited to mammals.

“There is no species of bird that has been recorded using tools for more than one function,” said zoologist Joanna Wimpenny of the University of Sheffield.

The new findings, published in December in Animal Cognition, are still preliminary, but “we really think they suggest very strongly that they’re using tools for a different function,” she said.

I doubt that those were New Caledonian crows. Where was that crow?

It is very interesting that there now exists a journal called Animal Cognition. It was not so long ago that that would have been thought an oxymoron.

On one of my last river trips, I declined the hike so I could watch crows play on the hillside opposite our camp. It started as a small group of juveniles. They were throwing stones in the air and hopping over each other to catch them or pick them up and throw them again. Then they started stotting, hopping on stiff legs, all over the hill. One started it, then a few at a time others joined in. Pretty soon crows were flying in from all directions and it ended with the entire hill covered in crows, hopping stiff legged all around. It was obvious that this was a form of group play.
I watched for over an hour. I'm easily entertained.

I want's one of these...

as soon as they have one that will let me store my Ferrante and Teicher collection on it.

Back in the mid 1980s, one of my regular flight attendants was Arthur Ferrante's daughter, Brenda.

This film clip is circulating (again) on right wing Web sites, but I think they do not understand what it means. They are thinking President Obama, and Chaplin is thinking about the right wing.

I was about to ridicule The Good Sister who works at a college local to that, but further research shows it's actually from the high school. She's safe... for now.

Of course, that makes it even more ironic that many couldn't answer the capitol of their state when they live in it.

While awaiting being picked up by the Galactics or the cash-in of their Iraqi Dinars, the folks at RAP/NESARA often reveal something of themselves. In this case, the 1950s were so great!

http://oldfortyfives.com/TakeMeBackToTheFifties.htm

Of course, the video makes no mention of the social changes that were occurring. The 1950s are frozen in a stasis of rock 'n roll, cars, bad movies, and vinyl dinette sets. Brown v. Board of Education is not mentioned. Nor is the 101st Airborne at Little Rock Central High School. Their memory is highly selective.

Justice Sotomayor rides the ABCth Circuit.

Quote:
News that a Supreme Court justice appeared on a TV show would normally make me cringe. But I think this appearance by Justice Sotomayor on Sesame Street is really terrific. Kudos to Justice Sotomayor for being a good sport about it.

Putting aside the lack of a federal question, it seems a tad unfair to ignore the trespass before pressuring the parties to settle in way so favorable to the trespasser. But I suppose it’s nicer to hear the case than just deny cert as factbound and splitless. Hat tip: How Appealing.

Volokh Conspiracy analyzes the case.
