More than 150 leaders in the conservative evangelical Christian community are getting together Friday and Saturday at a private ranch west of Houston in a last-ditch effort to derail Mitt Romney's march to the Republican nomination ...

"What is driving it is discomfort with Mitt Romney among evangelicals, and the search for another candidate," he said. Some evangelicals see this as their last chance to stop Romney, with the South Carolina primary just a week after their meeting.

<Santorum, Perry, Gingrich blah, blah, blah>

What will probably happen, he says, is a vigorous discussion about where candidates stand on the issues and perhaps a consensus among the leaders, who could make their own endorsements.

That consensus appears to be moving toward Santorum, who could benefit greatly in South Carolina from big evangelical endorsements.

In search of an anti-Romney (NPR)

Edit: All the heavies will be there:

Tony Perkins, Gary Bauer, Donald Wildmon, James Dobson and Richard Land.

Can they stop Romneycare?

They'd have picked Gingrich if not for Gingrich's attacks this week on the Financial Wing of the Republican party by way of his questioning Romney about Bain. Remember, Gingrich received absolution from James Dobson in 2007. Max Blumenthal called it "Cheap Grace" in "Republican Gomorrah".* Gingrich told Dobson during a call-in to his radio show.
Quote:
...I have turned to God and got on my knees and prayed to God and asked for forgiveness"

Jerry Falwell heard it and invited Gingrich to give the grad speech at his Liberty Univ that year. Thereafter, Gingrich was redeemed.

Edit: Amazon lets you read most of the chapter. But you can buy it for as low as $1.35 and $5 shipping. My copy has about 20 sticky tabs on it and I've found myself pulling it from the bookshelf several times in the last year.

Many Evangelicals do not consider Catholics to be Christians. They have enough trouble considering Methodists to be Christians. Their source for this is often the Book of Revelation, which they interpret as describing the Roman Catholic Church to be the "Whore of Babylon".

With Romney suspect because he is Mormon (same for Huntsman), and Gingrich and Santorum both Catholics (Gingrich recently), who do they have left? Rick Perry and Ron Paul. Or maybe Buddy Roemer, who got 941 votes in New Hampshire. Paul is far too libertarian on some social issues for Evangelicals. That leaves Rick Perry. Some New Hampshire polls showed Perry trailing Roemer, although it did not turn out that way. Rick Perry got 1,766 votes. If you subtract that leading one from the 7, you get the mark of the beast: 666. Perry's in trouble. Cain cannot be redeemed, and Bachman is a loser.

What is a poor Evangelical arch-conservative to do in such a situation? Draft Saint Sarah, the half-Governor?

I wish them the most contentious of meetings.

The best thing about Mormons is that every time I go to Utah I'm a Gentile.

And the winner is....

Quote:
Rick Santorum Wins Endorsement Of Evangelical Leaders

WASHINGTON -- A week before the South Carolina primaries, more than 150 conservative evangelical leaders met in Texas and voted to throw their weight behind former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum. The endorsement, which will likely come with grassroots support and fundraising assistance, marks a last-minute effort to help a socially conservative candidate dethrone current frontrunner Mitt Romney.

"Rick Santorum has consistently articulated the issues that are of concern to conservatives, both economic and social," said Family Research Council President Tony Perkins, speaking on behalf of the attendees. "He has woven those into a very solid platform. And he has a record of stability."

Added Perkins: "He obviously is not up to some of the other candidates in terms of fundraising, but those issues can be corrected. With this strong consensus coming behind him, that can aid in the fundraising that he needs to be successful in the primary."

I would have preferred Newt Gingrich (Tiffany's husband), but Santorum Google it is almost as good.

It will be instructive to see if there is a Santorum "bump" in South Carolina.

Ron Paul should survive as long as there is a group--once it's him vs. Mitt, he's done.

Late this afternoon, I could hear an eruption of cheers, yahooing, car honking and firecrackers going off everywhere in the city. This is what folks had just seen. It is now known as 'The Catch'' along with other superlatives for the game itself.

Eternal Word Television Network dealt with the Whore of Babylon screed back in the Papacy of John Paul II. It is an old claim; this form of anti-Catholicism has been around for a very long time. It is only one part of a general insistence that the Roman Catholic Church is anti-Christ, if not Teh AntiChrist.
