Warren Jeffs Sentenced to Life in Prison for Sex With Underage Girls.

Jurors deliberated for just under 30 minutes before ordering Jeffs to serve life in prison on one count of aggravated sexual assault of a child and 20 years in prison on one count of sexual assault of a child. They also determined Jeffs must pay a $10,000 fine.

Jeffs, 55, must serve half of each of those sentences — a total of 45 years — before he could become eligible for parole if he lived to the age of 100.

In a closing statement given Tuesday morning, prosecutor Eric Nichols told the jury the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints leader was a man who "perverted a religion to his own ends" and treated women and children not as human beings but as "property for sexual gratification and child bearing."

Prosecutors rested their case against Jeffs in the sentencing phase of his trial on Monday. Jurors last week convicted Jeffs in connection with two plural marriages to girls ages 12 and 15.

During the sentencing phase, prosecutors presented evidence of other so-called bad acts committed by Jeffs. Jurors were told Jeffs took a total of 78 plural wives, including 12 girls he wed at age 16 and another 12 he married at age 15 or younger, according to evidence and testimony presented in court Monday.

Jurors heard several audio recordings of what prosecutors said was Jeffs giving sexual instruction to underage wives and even having intercourse in a baptismal font inside a temple at the sect’s Yearning for Zion Ranch in Eldorado.

What a pile of shit Warren Jeffs is. I'm all for plural marriages of consenting adults, but grown men taking advantage of teenage girls is absolutely disgusting. I spit in Warren Jeffs' general direction.

What makes him worse is that he convinced people--even the parents of these girls--that his having sex with young girls was a good and necessary thing sanctioned by God.

Compared to filth like Jeffs, even Orly looks like a decent human being.

Currently, Jeffs is still controlling the group from prison. I'm not certain that this will change in the near future.

I think that the FLDS may make a change in marrying under-aged girls; time will tell. So far, Jeffs and 7 other men have received prison time for marrying under-aged girls. Jeff's trial aired some pretty disturbing stuff; he made audio recordings of some of his sex sessions with his young brides. Other women were in the room at the time. To my knowledge, sex was between Jeffs and his new child wife, but other women were present during his "teaching" sessions.

I will find more info and share it this afternoon. I think that this trial has opened the door for the FLDS to examine and to alter some of their most egregious acts. Whether or not the church leadership chooses to learn from this is up to them.

LMK, I doubt anything will change. They have to start these girls reproducing early, so that they can bear 12 or so children in their lifetimes. Remember, most of the victims refuse to testify. The reason the Jeffs prosecution was successful was that the State obtained the recordings of the rapes during the raids, and even then other courts suppressed those recordings. I doubt the other rapists will make the same mistake. Sorry to be a pessimist here, but in a cult of over 10,000, these prosecutions will be a proverbial drop in the bucket. Also, too, many cult members live in other jurisdictions that don't seem too anxious to prosecute (well AZ did but screwed up the jury instructions).

It will be interesting to see if Warren Jeffs can continue to run the cult from prison. I heard that while in jail awaiting trial, Jeffs was spending over $10,000 a month on phone calls (phone cards donated by his followers, while our tax dollars were paying for their food through the food stamp scams they have going). I don't know for sure, but I suspect Jeffs' phone privileges won't be as liberal in prison.

At one point in the tape recordings, Jeffs can be heard instructing "Naomi" to untie the girl(s). Texas law does not provide a double standard for the crime of child sexual abuse.

Although some news reports say that most of Jeffs' FLDS followers are unaware of his conviction because of their isolation from the rest of the world, other news reports say that followers are building a 38' tall statue in honor of their imprisoned "prophet." Many news reports say that Jeffs is still running the cult from a telephone in jail, including excommunicating members and issuing other orders. He has a contender for leadership of the cult, William E. Jessop, who has written a warning to the faithful (letter on Scribd).

Two municipal authorities have been indicted for corruption ("misusing public funds and participating in 'a criminal syndicate'") in the main base of the cult, Colorado City, Ariz. A court battle continues over a trust fund reportedly worth $110 million; although members of the cult frequently apply for social welfare benefits, it may have substantial resources.

The cult moved women from place to place, including across international boundaries. RCMP are now investigating how women from B.C. ended up in FLDS towns in the U.S.

I had not heard a word about the high incidence of mental retardation in their community.

Perhaps worth a discussion in a new thread:

Fumarase Deficiency seems to be a specialty within this community.

But there is a long term biological experiment running with marriage among close relatives, eg cousins. It's name is Islam. For some 1500 years (give or take) they have been practicing cousin marriage. From what I picked from some web articles and YouTube clips a few months ago, the results are statistically significant. Overall the IQ among the Muslim population practicing cousin marriage is some 15 points lower than global average. It was mentioned that this may be one of the reasons why the world as yet to see any significant contributions by Muslims to science, and why they have yet to produce a Nobel Prize winner. In addition this population share an enormous number of child birth defects. I understand that both the UK and Sweden have a special load of young patients stemming only from the local Muslim communities, in the UK especially from Pakistani origin. The report noted the whole of Saudi Arabia with identical medical issues.
