ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland -- A New York fire department is donating a piece of the former World Trade Center to a Newfoundland town for its help after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The Newfoundland town of Gander on Canada's Atlantic coast was the closest airport for 38 passenger planes forced to land there.

Gander and nearby towns were celebrated for welcoming more than 6,000 stranded passengers as if they were family.

The Bethpage Volunteer Fire Department on Long Island is donating a piece of steel beam for the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

The remnant from the World Trade Center will be part of a memorial at the North Atlantic Aviation Museum in Gander.

snopes has a good article, including a first-person account of a Delta flight diverted to Gander.

We have a family friend who was flying from India to Phoenix on September 11. Her plane was diverted en route to Canada, where she was stranded for a few days, just like the people in these stories. I've actually never talked to her about her experience, in part because everyone was so overwhelmed with 9/11 itself, including her, so I don't know if she was in Gander or not.

Of course, Canadians acted the way they always do, especially when it comes to helping out Americans. For all the occasional acrimony that spills out over minor commercial border issues, I do believe the bond is much stronger between these two countries than it is or ever will be between the US and Britain or anyone else.
