The casualty figures from both the central government district and the island youth camp are still in flux. Some people tried to escape by swimming from the island to the mainland even as the SWAT team was arriving at the island. Police are reported now to be looking for explosives on the island.
As this story becomes clearer, we may find that the quick assumption that some extremist Islamist group is behind the attacks is false. Norway
also has an anti-immigrant radical right that is not pleased with the current coalition government and the Labour Party that is leading it.
Despite that lack of clarity, in a typical demonstration of bad taste the American Thinker is running:
The Crocodile Feeding in NorwayQuote:
"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile -- hoping it will eat him last." Winston Churchill
Norway, which has a sordid history of feeding the anti-Semitic, anti-Israel beast, woke up this morning to the shock of the Islamist beast feeding on Norwegian blood.
Norwegian police have now confirmed that a bomb by an Al Qaeda-linked group caused an explosion at the government headquarters in Oslo, and reports are now coming in of a simultaneous attack at a youth camp. The body count is not yet in, but most of Norway must be asking "Why us? Haven't we been sufficiently anti-Semitic and anti-Israel?"
Edit: Police: Utoya shooter was local manQuote:
Police say the gunman is a Norwegian.
Witnesses described the suspect as "blond" and "Nordic-looking." Late Friday, Knut Storberegt, Norway's royal minister of justice and the police, confirmed that he is a Norwegian; the BBC, citing police, said he was from Utoya. Police said he is also believed to have been involved in the bombing that killed seven people earlier in the day in Oslo, about 25 miles away.
Magnus Ranstorp, a terrorism researcher at the Swedish Defense Academy, told Nettavisen, that the description of the suspect and his possible involvement in bombing national government offices, "points to an internal rather than external extremist extremist."
"Intuitively, the bombing is al-Qaida-related, but with this attack on Utoya, this could just be a crazy person," Ranstorp said.
