But I could never part with something that warms my heart and makes me smile every time I see it. I can almost see my dad smiling back at me at times. He was a real hoot I have to say, we lost in in 1986. He now resides on Eisenhower Drive at Arlington National.

He even adopted himself a theme song and always sang along with it when he heard it play, even if he couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. Another trait he passed on to me.

Florida man discovers he's not legally in US more than 60 years after moving to America
Revelation came when Social Security denied him benefits

By: Katie LaGrone
Posted at 2:53 PM, May 07, 2024 and last updated 1:11 AM, May 08, 2024

After more than half a century in the U.S., where he's lived, worked, gone to school, got married, had kids, paid his taxes and even voted, Jimmy Klass said in 2020 he discovered he's not an American citizen.

Outside Jimmy Klass' mobile home in Clearwater are symbols of American pride hanging not just front and center but also on the side and back of his home. America is, after all, the only home this 66-year-old has ever known.

"I moved to the U.S. in 1959. I've been here for 64 years," he recently told us.

But after more than half a century in the U.S., where he's lived, worked, gone to school, got married, had kids, paid his taxes and even voted, Klass said in 2020 he discovered he's not an American citizen.

"I just was, like, blindsided," he said about the revelation.

Klass said it all came to light after he applied for the Social Security retirement benefits he had paid into his entire working life.

"You've got to be kidding me," he said. "One month, they told me I should expect my first check on the second Wednesday of 2020. But instead, I get a letter stating that I haven't proven to them that I'm here legally."

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — An unusually strong solar storm headed toward Earth could produce northern lights in the U.S. this weekend and potentially disrupt power and communications.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a rare geomagnetic storm watch — the first in nearly 20 years. That was expected to become a warning Friday night, when the effects of the solar outburst were due to reach Earth.

NOAA already has alerted operators of power plants and spacecraft in orbit to take precautions.

“As far as the worst situation expected here at Earth, that’s tough to say and I wouldn’t want to speculate on that,” said NOAA space weather forecaster Shawn Dahl. “However, severe level is pretty extraordinary, It’s a very rare event to happen.”

If you are interested, here's a "before" Google street view of what it looked like before the fence/mural were constructed. This was from 2019, so it seems to be a different boat, but you can see where the boat was, well off the street. I can't believe the City of Seaside would fine someone for this. What jerks.

The boat is better than the brown weedy front yard.

The LA Times goes into a bit more in-depth about how this came about - they hired a compliance officer. There's also a link to the city code regarding storage of non-passenger vehicles.

Turn the view around 180 degrees and look at the yard across the street.

This is California. 2019 was a dry year. Some California cities prohibit lawn watering and car washing during droughts.

I get that. I did look across the street and thought that yard looked better.

No idea why the boat bothered them.

Melinda French Gates to step down as co-chair of Gates Foundation
Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates had pledged to continue work together through trial period after filing for divorce in 2021

Kari Paul and agencies
Mon 13 May 2024 19.26 CEST

Melinda French Gates said on Monday she would step down as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the world’s biggest private charitable foundations, which she co-founded with her former spouse more than 20 years ago.

Her last day of work at the foundation will be 7 June, according to her post on Instagram.

“The time is right for me to move forward into the next chapter of my philanthropy,” she wrote, adding that the CEO, Mark Suzman, and the executive leadership team would “ensure its important work continues”.

Billionaire benefactors Bill and Melinda Gates, co-founders of one of the world’s largest private charitable foundations, filed for divorce in 2021 after 27 years of marriage in 2021. They pledged to continue their philanthropic work together, but said at the time they would undertake a trial period through 2023 to determine whether they would continue to co-manage the charitable foundation.

Founded in 2000, the foundation is one of the most powerful and influential forces in global public health, having spent more than $50bn over the past two decades to bring a business approach to combating poverty and disease. They have infused funds into projects including transforming agriculture technology to aid poverty and hunger as well as extensive health care efforts to fight disease like Aids, tuberculosis and malaria.

Gates said that, per a separation agreement with her former husband, she will leave with an additional $12.5bn, which she will use to continue her work “on behalf of women and families”. The foundation did not immediately respond to request for additional comment.

“I am sorry to see Melinda leave, but I am sure she will have a huge impact in her future philanthropic work,” Bill Gates said in a post on X.

This popped up in an AmEx ad on Reddit a while ago. It seemed odd since there are only three or four dozen 747s left in passenger operation in the world. I don't think Delta operates any. It would have been more fun if it was a 737 that had little bits fall off the card each time you used it.
