Those of us without a lifetime's knowledge of US tv missed the clever disjunction of using Barbara Billingsley for that scene … and probably similar references elsewhere, but Airplane was so stacked with jokes, who cares?

It amused me how few people notice that the background droning noise for the plane's engines is for a propellor plane (the original from the film it was based on, whose name momentarily escapes me), wholly wrong for a 1980 jet plane.

Those of us without a lifetime's knowledge of US tv missed the clever disjunction of using Barbara Billingsley for that scene … and probably similar references elsewhere, but Airplane was so stacked with jokes, who cares?

It amused me how few people notice that the background droning noise for the plane's engines is for a propellor plane (the original from the film it was based on, whose name momentarily escapes me), wholly wrong for a 1980 jet plane.

The entire movie was based in the 1957 movie Zero Hour. The propeller sounds were taken from that 1957 version.

The makers of "Airplane" took the precaution of buying the rights to the script of "Zero Hour" for around $2500.
