A friend asked me yesterday, "Why should Weiner resign when Vitter has not?"

My answer: "Vitter's a Republican so I can't answer for that party, since I'm a Democrat. I guess they as a party favor prostitution by their members because those are their values. But as a Democrat, I don't want Weiner associated with the Dems' leadership in this country, so he needs to go."

I said this very loudly at the Dbacks-Giants baseball game by the way, so I know many Republicans around me must have heard it.

I also do not see this as an over-reaction. What I object to is Weiner's aggressive lying. I don't think that the House Democrats and the President are being prudes; they are reacting to a matter of character.

I don't know... I still think it is about them being prudes. Let's face it sex is a huge, huge deal in this country.

Congress critters distort facts and lie every day in this country both on the house or senate floor and to the media.

(90% of what planned parenthood does is abortions anyone?)

Hell just a few years ago we went to war based on lies.

Per usual, its not the act that really gets you in trouble, it is the attempt to cover it up. The lying, the hacking claim, that was all worse IMO than sending out the pics.

I agree, esseff. But at this point, I care more about the Democratic Party and the 2012 elections than I do about Anthony Weiner. The Party has to be able to focus. It irks me most that this was a successful right wing op. Really burns me up.

Congress is pathetic. What he did was inappropriate, but so is the overreaction.

Hecklers. Yelling "pervert". NBC broke away, worried it was gonna get worse.

Ugly.

Well, I guess that's what happens when your district is New York City, and you let a scandal fester for so long that everyone eventually gets their hands on self-portraits of you grabbing your wiener at the gym like you're some pimple-faced teenage horndog.

Part of his reason for resigning should have been to save the embarrassment his family would feel as each of these photos would eventually reveal themselves. He was the only one who knew how many of them were actually out there. He should have known they would come out. He could have avoided it.

All that said, I doubt his "period of rehabilitation" will realistically require more than 6 months, as far as his public image is concerned. That's about how long the public will want to see him gone, before he makes his next move to restore his reputation. Spitzer, who I assume hired a very wise PR advisor, began his come-back by simply writing columns, and then making television appearances where his commentary was invited. Eventually, he landed a CNN show. Weiner should take note.

It was interesting that his wife was not by his side. I have been saddened and a bit disgusted to see wives allow themselves to be dragged onto a stage while some politician apologizes for a sexual transgression, as if the presence of the wives as ornaments shows that the men are really fine husbands who just made a little boo-boo.

His marriage may or may not be endangered. That is not my business.

Slate: Hustler Publisher Offers Weiner a Job
Quote:
In a letter dated June 16, Hustler publisher Larry Flynt offered the disgraced politician a job at Flynt Management Group, LLC. Flynt demonstrates a surprising amount of self-awareness, repeatedly stating that the job offer is not, like you may think, a joke.

The letter reads, in part: "As a Congressman, you are known for your intensity and perseverance. I believe that this attitude, combined with your service in the House of Representatives’ Committee on Energy and Commerce, will make you a valuable asset to this corporation."

[...]

The job would be in the Flynt Group’s Internet division. That’s a bit surprising, given that the Weiner scandal erupted because the congressman seemed unfamiliar with the nuances of private messaging on Twitter.

To prove his sincerity, Flynt offers Weiner 20 percent more than his congressional salary. And to sweeten the deal, he promises to cover the cost of Weiner’s relocation to Beverly Hills, home of the Flynt Management Group.

The Hollywood Reporter says that before the congressman resigned, Entourage executive producer Doug Ellin offered Weiner the chance to play himself on the show. Ellin told the news outlet that he had not heard back from Weiner.

Fake Identities Were Used on Twitter in Effort to Get Information on Weiner
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/18/nyreg ... Fje5YriooA
Quote:
A Twitter user employing a fake name posed as a 16-year-old California high school girl in May and tried to get Mr. Weiner to be her prom date, according to people with knowledge of the communications and a review of documents. The person behind another Twitter account created under a fake name claimed to be her classmate and offered to provide the group with incriminating evidence about Mr. Weiner.

So... 'Weiner' has been coined. Again.

The Daily Beast:
Quote:
‘Belgian Weiner’ Tweets at Mistress

It’s not just Anthony Weiner: Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme accidentally tweeted publicly a note he intended as a direct message to his mistress. The note is just the tip of the iceberg, in his case: The two also exchanged 849 text messages and he helped her find a job at the foreign ministry. It’s also the second time he accidentally sent a private message for her to his public feed, following a note sent out a year ago, which translates to “Not at all. Want to learn to know you. You too?”

I saw a post last night in WSJ about an ethics investigation on Alcee Hastings for sexual harassment. As judicial watch is involved, I am suspicious.

He didn't run for Congress. New York lost two seats in Congress, post-census redistricting. The word was that the guy was gonna be screwed -- and I think what eventually happened bears that out. The district was divvied up pretty much. He ran in the GOP primary for Senate, without success.
