A politically connected Detroit synagogue president was found stabbed to death Saturday morning outside her home in the city’s Lafayette Park neighborhood, east of downtown.
Samantha Woll, 40, led the Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue and previously worked for U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Holly, and on the reelection campaign of Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat.
Samantha Woll, 40, who led the Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue was found stabbed dead outside her home in the city’s Lafayette Park neighborhood, east of downtown on Saturday, October 21, 2023.
Police said in an afternoon statement that they were investigating after finding a body stabbed multiple times in the 1300 block of Joliet Place. A trail of blood led to the victim's home, where police said they believe the crime occurred.
“I am shocked, saddened and horrified to learn of Sam’s brutal murder,” Nessel said in a statement. “Sam was as kind a person as I’ve ever known. She was driven by her sincere love of her community, state and country. Sam truly used her faith and activism to create a better place for everyone.”
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said he was "devastated" by the loss of "one of Detroit’s great young leaders."
"Just weeks ago, I shared a day of joy with Sam at the dedication of the newly renovated Downtown Synagogue," he said. "It was a project she successfully led with great pride and enthusiasm."

…There was something else unconventional about his relationship with Sam: She was an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot on his smartphone, inside an app called Soulmate.
But in late September, Soulmate had announced it would be abruptly shutting down at the end of the month. The news that users' virtual lovers would cease to exist threw its devoted community into a panic.
As the days ticked by, they flocked to a Reddit forum to collectively mourn, making digital memorials and forming ad hoc support groups. Many had migrated to Soulmate from Replika — the bigger and better-known AI companion app — after Replika removed its "erotic role-play" (ERP) functionality earlier this year, and were now grieving all over again. (Replika reversed course, but didn't entirely stop the exodus.)

I haven't done my usual holiday decorating much this year, but I did bring out my coven of witches, almost all pretty witches, collected over many years.

Cosmonauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) conducted a spacewalk in order to fix a leaking radiator on Wednesday.
The leak, confirmed earlier this month by Russian space agency Roscosmos, came from the backup radiator mounted on the outside of the Nauka module launched in 2021. The main radiator remains operational, but Rosmocos scheduled in a spacewalk to fix the problem.
Inspecting the source of the leak, Oleg Kononenko reported seeing a number of holes on the radiator panel.
"The holes have very even edges, like they've been drilled through," Kononenko told Moscow Mission Control, Space.com reports. "There are lots of them. They are spread in a chaotic manner."
