Glacier National Park: Grizzly vs Moose

Andrew Wood
2022, 6 Jul

While working in Glacier National Park over the summer at the Many Glacier Hotel, I witnessed this crazy occurrence. The Mama Moose had twins, and after several days of stalking them, the bear got the first baby. However, when he went for the second baby, this is what happened.

It's been just over a month since this happened, and as far as we can tell the baby moose is still safe and sound due to the Mama Moose's courage and constancy. Let's go, queen.

Anheuser-Busch says it will end the practice of amputating the tails of its signature Budweiser Clydesdale horses, following a pressure campaign from the animal rights group PETA.
That seems like good news.
I used to try and make a joke after Inbev bought AB. I wondered if they would retire the Clydesdales, and replace them with Belgians. Bad joke, nobody got it.
My folks had everything except Clydesdales. Belgian, Percheron, Shire, for some reason they didn’t like the Clydesdales

Sweet.

I'd be a little scared for her, too, though. We've had dogs who would play rough with the adults, but as soon as the toy was passed to a little kid would immediately moderate their playful roughness.

I was more afraid that she was riding a horse without a helmet. Princess is in a “mama zone” around children. She is ultra calm and happy.

That was adorable. What a sweet, sweet girl and wonderful horses. They really do seem to be extra gentle with her.

Britain’s ‘loneliest sheep’ rescued after two years at foot of cliff
The ‘over-fat’ ewe, named Fiona, was hauled up from her solitary spot on a remote Scottish beach by farmers

Jedidajah Otte
Sat 4 Nov 2023 18.22 CET

A ewe that was hailed Britain’s loneliest sheep has been rescued by a group of farmers from a remote shingle beach in the Scottish Highlands.

The sheep, called Fiona and wearing a huge fleece, had been stranded at the foot of cliffs on the Cromarty Firth for at least two years, with an animal welfare charity having deemed rescue attempts “incredibly complex”.

But five farmers managed to haul her up a steep slope, and now plan to deliver her to a farm park.

The rescue mission was organised by Cammy Wilson, a sheep shearer from Ayrshire and a presenter on the BBC’s Landward programme, after seeing media coverage of Fiona’s plight.

Speaking in a video posted on Facebook, he said: “We’ve come up here with some heavy equipment and we’ve got this sheep up an incredibly steep slope.

“She’s in incredible condition. She is about a condition score of about 4.5, she is over-fat – it was some job lifting her up that slope.

“She is going to a very special place that a lot of you know very well, where you’ll be able to see her virtually every day.”

Jillian Turner first spotted the sheep two years ago while she was paddling along the coast of Sutherland with her kayak club. She assumed the sheep would make it back to wherever home was by itself and thought no more of it.

When she took the same journey again recently she was horrified to see the same animal.

National Zoo pandas leave DC in emotional goodbye
The National Zoo's giant pandas left D.C. for good on Wednesday

By Maggie More, Allison Hageman and NBC Washington Staff •
Published November 8, 2023 • Updated on November 9, 2023 at 9:28 am

Many were tearful as they watched the pandas depart D.C. for China. News4’s Aimee Cho and Tommy McFly have team coverage of the historic day.

It's a day thousands of visitors to the National Zoo have been dreading for months, or possibly years. The zoo's famed giant pandas have left D.C.

As crowds of hastily gathered fans looked on, the three pandas — each aboard an individual FedEx truck adorned with a signature furry black-and-white face — emerged from the zoo gates, traveled down Connecticut Avenue and then through Northern Virginia. They then took off aboard a specially equipped FedEx plane en route to China.

Tian Tian, 26; Mei Xiang, 25, and their youngest offspring, 3-year-old Xiao Qi Ji, will move to new homes in the China Wildlife Conservation Association. Tian Tian and Mei Xiang were born in China; Xiao Qi Ji was born at the zoo, along with three older surviving siblings who have already moved to China.

Giant pandas have been a beloved fixture in D.C. since the first duo arrived in the 1970s. Wednesday isn't the first time we've seen pandas leave the region, but it's the first time in 23 years that the panda exhibit at the zoo is empty.

In opening remarks marking the start of the pandas' journey, National Zoo Director Brandie Smith said it was a "hard morning." She spoke in front of the zoo's Asia Trail and the just-vacated panda enclosure. The zoo's online Giant Panda Cam broadcasted an empty hammock before the page switched over to offer a compilation of old footage.

“It’s a moment of joy because this is one more step in 50 years of a successful giant panda conservation program, and hopefully the beginning of 50 more years,” Smith said. “Please know the future is bright for giant pandas. We remain committed to our program, and we look forward to celebrating with all of you when pandas can return to D.C.”

Mouse filmed tidying up man's shed every night

Guardian News
7 Jan 2024

Retired postman Rodney Holbrook, 75, captured footage of a mouse tidying up his workbench after dark. Over a couple of months, he noticed that the things he used during the day were being mysteriously put away at night, so he set up a night-vision camera in his shed in Builth Wells, Powys, Wales, to find out what was happening. He discovered that an industrious mouse was picking up items such as nuts and bolts, clothes pegs and cable ties and tidying them away into a box.
