Quote:
Who was Stanley Ann Dunham?

Close followers of politics know that Stanley Ann Dunham was the mother of President Obama. And while the president has written about his dad -- there was that whole "Dreams From My Father" bestseller -- his mother has been less present in Obama's public narrative.

Now, Stanley Ann Dunham -- who went by Ann -- will come into focus, with a biography coming in May from Riverhead. "A Singular Woman: The Untold Story of Barack Obama's Mother" is due in bookstores May 3.

The biography is written by Janny Scott, a former New York Times reporter who left the paper to complete the book.

Adding from the Publisher's Description:

Quote:
Award-winning reporter Janny Scott has interviewed nearly two hundred of Ann's friends, colleagues, and relatives (including both her children), and combed through boxes of personal and professional papers, letters to friends, and photo albums, to uncover the full breadth of Ann's inspiring and untraditional life, and to show the remarkable extent to which she shaped the man Obama is today.

Poor Janny. She'll be the target of Orly Taitz's next attempt at discovery.

So, umm ... yeah. I suppose you deranged Obots are going to simply ignore reality and pretend for public consumption that it's purely a meaningless coincidence that May curiously also happens to be Zombie Awareness Month. :-k

Sounds like book club stuff to me.

Quote:
Obama’s Young Mother Abroad

The photograph showed the son, but my eye gravitated toward the mother. That first glimpse was surprising — the stout, pale-skinned woman in sturdy sandals, standing squarely a half-step ahead of the lithe, darker-skinned figure to her left. His elastic-band body bespoke discipline, even asceticism. Her form was well padded, territory ceded long ago to the pleasures of appetite and the forces of anatomical destiny. He had the studied casualness of a catalog model, in khakis, at home in the viewfinder. She met the camera head-on, dressed in hand-loomed textile dyed indigo, a silver earring half-hidden in the cascading curtain of her dark hair. She carried her chin a few degrees higher than most. His right hand rested on her shoulder, lightly. The photograph, taken on a Manhattan rooftop in August 1987 and e-mailed to me 20 years later, was a revelation and a puzzle. The man was Barack Obama at 26, the community organizer from Chicago on a visit to New York. The woman was Stanley Ann Dunham, his mother. It was impossible not to be struck by the similarities, and the dissimilarities, between them. It was impossible not to question the stereotype to which she had been expediently reduced: the white woman from Kansas.

Aww:

Obama was precocious indeed. Even from an early age, he knew that pirates kick the shit out of ninjas.

Thanks for posting that article, Addy.

A couple of things:

1. The racists are going to piss themselves when they find out the family had servants.

2. If Ann gave even a hint of being a commie, she would have been killed in those first years in Indonesia.

3. I don't get all of the accusations of abandonment. Are rich people who send their kids off to boarding school accused of abandoning their kids?

4. Very interesting to read how he became so cool and well mannered (as opposed to the uncouth Trump).

Very good point, Seq. I didn't think of that.

Edit: Just saw this Freeper post, fwiw, referring to Stanley Ann, the commie.

Shocking new photographs from Barack Obama’s African Past reveal that he was actually a Somali pirate in Hawaii during his youth, the feared “Child Scallywag of Honolulu.” Here, pictured with Liz Phairin the early 1990s, the dread pirate O’bamar prepares to raid a British crown colony of landlubbers and then head off to the Indonesian pirate lair of “Singapore” to live under the Socialist doctrine of rum, sodomy and the lash. And even now that he’s “all growed up,” Barack Obama continues to welcome the various Pirate Kings to his mansion in Washington, where the terrible skull ‘n crossbones continues to fly beneath the disguise of “Old Glory.”

Regarding the pirate costume: It's really striking how utterly different Barry's childhood and upbringing was from that of "normal," "American" children, without exposure to "our" accepted cultural modes and memes.....

Brian Williams showed this pic on the NBC Nightly News tonight. "Barack Obama is not only America's first Black President, but the first President who was a pirate" (paraphrase). :D

We found one copy only at Borders and bought it. I'm reading it first.

It has some great pics, some I hadn't seen before. I find the writing a bit on the dry side, and Janny Scott, puzzlingly, fails in the first chapters to keep the players straight for the reader (IMO), with a multiplicity of Dunhams and Stanleys spanning three generations. But it's definitely enjoyable, and I feel will inform an important dimension for those interested in knowing our president better as a person.

[snark] And again, I must marvel at how such a book could be written in the first place, when really nothing is known of Obama's background and origins. [/snark]
