Now saying 2 people. One critical, One serious. <-that is confirmed.

Someone says brought gun in a backpack, the gun accidentally discharged when dropped and hit two.

Saying that school has had race relations issues.

The guy is in custody.

But guns don't shoot people, people shoot people.

I've heard the gun went off accidentally when dropped. Is this another case of a single bullet hitting more than one person, or is this a weapon that will shoot multiple bullets? No safety on the gun?

A 15-yr old boy was hit in the neck. A 15-yr old girl was hit in the head. She's in surgery right now.

(It sounds like the bullet went through the kid's neck and then hit the girl in the head.)

They say a kid carried a gun in a backpack to school. He placed the backpack on a desk, and something set it off. They don't know what. It "accidentally discharged". One round was fired and hit two students.

They said the kid got scared and took off running. He is in custody. They keep repeating how sorry he is.

ETA: I think they kept repeating the part about the kid being sorry due to the earlier reports of race relations at that school. I see other reports that some are skeptical of the "accidental" part of the shooting. I don't know what to make of it. It is freaky, but so was that accidental shooting at the Texas restaurant a couple of weeks ago. I suppose intentional or accidental, they are trying to keep calm there. The school was, of course, dismissed.

One of the news reports had a spokesperson for the police saying that the high school is a good school but faces typical urban problems.

For how long has bringing a gun to school been "typical" of urban problems? Something is very wrong here. My suspicion focuses now on gangs and gang culture, which can have a powerful influence on what kids think they have to do to be safe.

Gardena High School is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The school serves 3,100 students.

Five years ago, more than 2,000 suspensions were given out, and 15 students expelled, the Associated Press reported. Those figures remained high until last year when the number of suspensions dropped to 300 and expulsions to two.

Criiiiiminy! I am soooooo glad I don't have a kid in school anymore.

Unfortunately, both students are in critical condition.

Gardena is in an area that has mainly Latino and Black residents. The bad blood is an ongoing problem.

Also, this isn't an isolated issue, accidental shootings. Someone, can't remember who, probably Mimi , brought this site to our attention:

http://ohhshoot.blogspot.com/

This is the place that made me think gun insurance might be a fabulous idea. Or that we start cracking down on idiots with guns. With gun owneship comes great responsibility, which a whole bunch of people seem not to take seriously.

I will be holding these kids in my thoughts today.

One of my BILs is not a teacher in Detroit anymore because one day he asked one of his high schoolers to take his seat and the kid stuck him with a knife. When he came back to school a couple of weeks later, this kid's friends were waiting in the parking lot for him. He drove away and never looked back. Too bad, he is a great guy and helped many students find their way. It truly was their loss.

There was another shooting, this time near, not at, a high school yesterday. It is the school that has won the Academic
Decathlon so many times other schools pretty much plan on second place and on down if they are in the competition. The shooter was not a student but he hit a school district policeman. He's ok. They locked down a 7 mile area, including several schools. I don't think they have captured him yet.

(As usual, a paper in another part of the state did a better job with the coverage than the LAT)
