A wealthy donor provided Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) with a golf simulator for the governor’s mansion as well as private flights to fundraisers, according to a Washington Post investigation.

Mori Hosseini, the chair of the University of Florida board of trustees, lent a golf simulator system to DeSantis to be installed in the governor mansion gym, accessible only to the governor and his family. Models of the simulator range from $27,000 to nearly $70,000, the Post reported.

Since 2021, DeSantis-supporting PACs have reported more than 50 in-kind transportation donations believed to be private jet flights, the Post found. Specific travel records of his time as governor can no longer be acquired via public records after DeSantis signed a law making them private last month.

DeSantis announces lawsuit against Biden admin, Dept of Education over college accreditation

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday announced a lawsuit against the Biden administration and the U.S. Department of Education over the college accreditation process while speaking at Hillsborough Community College.

The lawsuit takes aim at college accreditation agencies, which DeSantis claims are unconstitutionally trumping Florida policies.

“You cannot take legislative power and delegate it to an unaccountable private body,” DeSantis said.

The state is asking the court to find the current accreditation requirements unconstitutional and permanently block their enforcement.

I was under the impression that accreditation was a voluntary but government privileged scheme -- i.e., you can run an unaccredited school, but you can't get federal dollars and you have no guarantee that other schools will consider your graduates' degrees worth a damn.

But nothing forces you to be accredited.

Am I wrong here?

No, you're exactly correct. Accreditation is voluntary and you usually have more than one choice but to get Federal dollars you have to have something.

Without any standards, we'll be giving Pell Grant money to Trump University and any number of Zero Down Real Estate Seminars and such. Meatball Ron want's to turn Florida into the finest education you can get for the late Bronze Age but still score that sweet Deep State Socialism cash.

As I understand it, you are correct. Accreditation carries no legal weight, there is no requirement to have it in order to have students. But it probably impacts your access to certain kinds of funds and makes your school more attractive to students (and potentially their loan backers).

Florida is notorious for its unaccredited schools, it is big business down there. So I suspect someone from that community is pushing for this in the hopes that they can claim accreditation on their recruiting materials and bring in more suckers.
