just another snippet on the copyright and DMCA issue:

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/201011 ... aven.shtml
Quote:
Sharron Angle Settles With Righthaven

from the just-get-it-over-with dept

visual77 points to the news that Sharron Angle has settled with Righthaven. This is hardly news. Now that Angle lost her campaign for the US Senate, there was little reason to keep up the fight. I'm sure Righthaven, since it's really an arm of Stephens Media and the Las Vegas Review-Journal -- which supported Angle's candidacy at the same time it claimed she was "stealing" from them, made it quite easy for her to settle for next to nothing. The only reason the company sued in the first place was because some local press had questioned why it had sued others, but had ignored Angle. So, it was all a publicity stunt, and now that the campaign is over, I'm sure both sides found it easier to just close out the case and move on.

Thearticle has also a snippet on the troubles of another website:
http://www.techdirt.com/articles/201011 ... aven.shtml
Quote:
Separately, that same article highlights one person who's been sued who plans to fight back, no matter what the cost. Robert Zumbrunnen, who runs the popular Silicon Investor web board, doesn't seem to want to back down:

"I'm really as aggressive about this issue as I can be. But I can't, as they whine that I didn't, read all of the thousands of messages posted every day, devoting what would amount to every waking minute (only to fall further and further behind), rather than little things like operating the site as a business," Zumbrunnen said in an email. "It's obvious they don't really want a fight. Unfortunately, I rather enjoy a knock-down drag-out and they did swing first.

"They've been scratching out a living catching minnows in nets and have decided to test deeper waters with me. Or they have no clue that they're trying to intimidate not the average blogger here, but a grey-bearded guy who's been around the block more times than he can count.

and the blogger comments:
http://www.techdirt.com/articles/201011 ... aven.shtml
Quote:
Silicon Investor is really quite a large forum for tech investors, and I'm actually quite surprised to find out that they apparently never bothered to register a DMCA agent. Yet another reminder, that if you run a website that allows any user participation, you really should register a DMCA agent.

Still, even without a DMCA agent, given the sheer volume of content on Silicon Investor, it seems like Zumbrunnen should be able to make a strong case that the site's operators should not face liability for postings of users, even without the DMCA's specific safe harbor. It's just an issue of properly applying liability, which Righthaven has failed to do. Hopefully some of the smart lawyers who are fighting Righthaven's awful campaign will step up and help Silicon Investor as well.

Well, there is NO ;) smiley in Chat. You can call it :winkadoodlodoo: for all I care, but you can't call it ";)" cause that's already used up for a hug. It's Justin who shows his manhood by using text smileys, like real men did back in the good old days, and would like them to conform to the old standards.

Because of the rooster's early morning crowing, Saint Vitus became known as the Patron Saint Against Oversleeping.

Quote:
Saint Vitus was a Sicilian who was converted from paganism to Christianity by his tutor and his nurse at the age of 12. Because of Saint Vitus' conversion, Saint Vitus' father had the three arrested and whipped at the stake.

Angels freed them from prison, and they fled to Rome where Saint Vitus exorcised the devil from the emperor's son. Because Saint Vitus refused to give thanks to the pagan gods for the devil's departure, Saint Vitus was tortured and condemned to death and thrown to the lions.

The lions refused to touch Saint Vitus, so Saint Vitus and a rooster (part of the pagan ritual), were thrown into boiling oil. Because of the rooster's early morning crowing, Saint Vitus became known as the Patron Saint Against Oversleeping.

Saint Vitus' feast day is June 15.

Just DMCA-insecure. Non-nerds, you may ignore the rest of this post. For those of you who are :: helpfully :: monitoring my every move to make sure I don't screw up, I submit the following.

From the release announcement:

Quote:
We are pleased to announce the release of phpBB "Patience is a Virtue" 3.0.8. This new version is a maintenance release fixing a large number of bugs as well as improving on usability and performance. Unfortunately we have also discovered a security issue in the previous version affecting boards which have the flash BBCode enabled - it is disabled by default. On WebKit based browsers like Safari or Chrome, as well as Opera, the flash BBCode can be used to execute javascript causing a cross site scripting vulnerability.

OK, that's a bad thing. And I DID have the flash BBCode enabled, but this morning I disabled it. The release has some lines of code to insert in one of the files if you're going to continue to leave it enabled, but I'm not, so I didn't.

The release continues:
Quote:
This will not fix the problem in already existing posts. In order to scan your board for malicious posts we have created a scanning script. Simply upload it to your phpBB's root directory and access it directly. A new version of the Support Toolkit including this script as well as a tool for reparsing individual posts will be released soon. We will keep you updated.

Downloaded the script and followed the instructions for scanning the board.
Results:
Quote:
Checking post_text on phpbb_posts
No potentially dangerous flash bbcodes found.

Checking message_text on phpbb_privmsgs
No potentially dangerous flash bbcodes found.

Checking user_sig on phpbb_users
No potentially dangerous flash bbcodes found.

Checking forum_desc on phpbb_forums
No potentially dangerous flash bbcodes found.

Checking forum_rules on phpbb_forums
No potentially dangerous flash bbcodes found.

Checking group_desc on phpbb_groups
No potentially dangerous flash bbcodes found.

If potentially dangerous flash bbcodes were found, please reparse the posts using the Support Toolkit (http://www.phpbb.com/support/stk/) and/or file a ticket in the Incident Tracker (http://www.phpbb.com/incidents/).

So we're good. I'll do the upgrade on Thanksgiving, because my shop is closed. I'll disable the board while I'm doing it, so we'll be offline for a brief period.

They also released the new STK, and I'll install that after I upgrade the board.

Unfortunately, no. And even if you could, there would probably be an extremely small file size you could upload.

If it's something you don't mind making public, you might try joining FileFactory and uploading it there. You can upload audio files, documents, and any other type of file.

If you can't make it public, usually your ISP gives you some basic webspace. Or, you can always ask the other person for an email address and then attach a PDF to an email.

I think my previous post needs to be changed from a question to a suggestion. The suggestion is add reply-all to the Serenity Purple style for PMs.

Loh, dude, I loves ya like a brother, but has you looked at the Fogbow Statistics up in the right-hand corner? Check the settings statistics tab, please, and see how many of us use Serenity Purple.

There's a reason Only 3 peeps use Serenty Purple. The reason is that the Serenity Purple setting sucks and the solution to the suckitude does not lie here at teh Fogbow. The solution lies with the red bull swilling teenagers coding the phpBB multiverse.

Serenity Purple is not so serene. It sucks. Come to the prosilver side of the force, Luke.

Maybe it's just me, but chat sucks on an iPad. The conversation doesn't automatically scroll, so I end up constantly refreshing the page to keep abreast of the conversation. Also, it might be an iPad problem, but if I open another tab to read while I'm also in chat, it boots me out after a couple of minutes.

:((

I did not take part in the Serenity Purple Reply All confab. But I did see Rhoda Galaxy's reply, and the locked thread.

And may I say, as sheriff, Rhoda's da bomb. That is all. :-bd
