Yes, they did misspell Haley's name, and I replicated that. Sorry. I have looked on the Web for this exact quote, and I can find only the Free Republic instance. Google could have missed a slightly misquoted statement, so it is possible that Haley did say this. If so, I find it very sad.

I agree, it would be very sad. For the moment I find it reassuring that the only current source we have is of scanty credibility.

I think it is a lie. Whether the Southern writer Neill made it up, or whether somebody lied about what Neill said he had heard, the quote fits with nothing else that I can find from Alex Haley:

I doubt he said that. I did see that freeper posted it quite a few times in a bunch of threads. Here is a quote by Haley regarding the Confederate Flag:

The Free Republic site has no link substantiating this fake quote. If you Google the quote itself, it appears on one site alone: Free Republic. This is just some shit made up by a lying-ass winger.

Such lies and disinformation are common on the right, who use such tactics to propagate the idea of the "happy-go-lucky" slave, and thus assuage their consciences of this vast crime against humanity BY THE FOUNDING FATHERS.

I've yet to hear a white person claim they would happily be a slave if it gave them the opportunity to live in a culture where their women and children could be raped and sold at will, where they could be lynched and murdered, where they were forced to live in substandard conditions, as long as they could be close to de massas and wuhship de lawd Jeezus.

American Thinker: Obama Calling Tea Party Racist Reveals A Far More Disturbing Reality
Lloyd Marcus wrote:
Please consider the validity of what I am about to say rather than having a knee jerk reaction dismissing it as being "over the top." Folks, we have an irresponsible egocentric evil man occupying the Oval Office.

[...]

President Obama said the Tea Party is racist. That's the unmistakable meaning of his statement that race is a "key component" of Tea Party protests. The liberal media, NAACP and Democrats have been relentlessly promoting this same baseless allegation. When final confirmation comes down from the highest office in the land, the Oval Office, that the Tea Party is racist; the allegation becomes "official" in the minds of millions. President Obama is slandering millions of decent hard working Americans who simply disagree with his progressive/socialist agenda.

Think of the repercussions. Obama's indictment of the Tea Party will birth tremendous racial discord across America in schools, churches, and civic life. Obama's proclamation will cause Americans to double down on their already extreme caution when criticizing our black president. Sadly, I suspect such intimidation is a part of Obama's plan; anything to empower his mission to "fundamentally transform America."

Make no mistake about it, Obama and company have successfully intimidated many white Americans into not dissing the black president in public.

I stopped in a fast food restaurant for a burger. Around fifteen white seniors were having lunch. I overheard them ranting about Obama's overreaches and socialist policies. Upon seeing me, a black man, they became silent. I was tempted to say, "Please continue, I whole-heartedly agree with you!" Too bad they did not notice my Tea Party Express t-shirt.

Barack Hussein Obama received more votes than any other presidential candidate in American history. So Obama alleging millions of Tea Party patriots are simply upset because America elected a black president is disingenuous, absurd and manipulative.

Having read the entire article and giving it some thought, I conclude it is entirely over the top.

When did Obama say the Tea Parties are racist?

U.S. News: Obama Says Race a Key Component in Tea Party Protests
Quote:
In May 2010, he told guests at a private White House dinner that race was probably a key component in the rising opposition to his presidency from conservatives, especially right-wing activists in the anti-incumbent "Tea Party" movement that was then surging across the country. Many middle-class and working-class whites felt aggrieved and resentful that the federal government was helping other groups, including bankers, automakers, irresponsible people who had defaulted on their mortgages, and the poor, but wasn't helping them nearly enough, he said.

A guest suggested that when Tea Party activists said they wanted to "take back" their country, their real motivation was to stir up anger and anxiety at having a black president, and Obama didn't dispute the idea. He agreed that there was a "subterranean agenda" in the anti-Obama movement—a racially biased one—that was unfortunate. But he sadly conceded that there was little he could do about it.

Squint reeeeeal hard and you'll see: Obama said Tea Partiers are racists.

Heh, I agree with your characterization. You do have to squint. As a matter of political strategy, the President has always been extremely careful to avoid looking like he's "whining" about race. I can guarantee that if you were lucky enough to be in his close circle of confidants, he would completely agree with you or any of us that race is a huge component in the hysteria about him from the right wing. But tactically, it would be counter-productive for any such thought from him to become public. He will never do it, as long as he is in office, in my opinion.

Nor does he need to; it's pretty obvious, listening to what these people say, and, of course, looking at the signage they have displayed at their rallies. Daily Kos has had some excellent photo diaries about this in the past. In fact, one of the "leaders" of the Houston Tea Partiers took to standing on an intersection with signs that called the President the N word...well, not exactly the intersection, he was safely standing at the edge of a strip center parking lot. Someone alerted the property owner, and he was removed. But I will never forget the sign, or the guy holding it. He also appeared at some of the national rallies.

Bet taken! Marcus is black:

You owe me 30...somethings.

What I love about Marcus's story is how 15 white people are afraid to discuss Obama in front of him, and that's Obama's fault!

He is. He's been the token black man at tea party rallies for a while.

They were Tea Tards! Isn't that EXACTLY what the Tea Party is all about, Lloyd?

Jeez, Lloyd. I can't understand why President Obama thinks that "race was probably a key component" in the Tea Party.

Did YOU think "race was probably a key component" in why the elderly white Tea Tards became silent, Lloyd?

Is that why you mentioned you were black, Lloyd? ;;)

Did you, or did you not just describe a scene which TOTALLY VALIDATES WHAT THE PRESIDENT SAID?

:-k

He claims the Tea Tards aren't racist ... except they go silent if a black man comes anywhere near in a fast food restaurant, from which it may be somewhat difficult to escape in an emergency, like prob'ly the black dude has a gun and isn't gonna pay for his burger. This passage has stuck in my craw for some time now. He wanted to tell them "I'm almost a white guy myself!"

I mean, gag me with a spoon.

In any event, our ol' buddy Lloyd Marcus is moving up in the world. According to an email I got from Andrea Shea King, he's now the chairman of something called "leading conservative group Campaign to Defeat Obama PAC".

Which of course means that if, as reported by ABC News, Dick Cheney himself criticized Saint Sarah of the Moosekill, then it was up to ol' Lloyd to respond on her behalf:
Quote:
Ever since she was selected in 2008 by the Republican party’s nominee for president [who shall remain unnamed for not being sufficiently Tea Tardedly Correct], then ratified by the GOP membership at the Republican Party convention [who are the very core of the Tea Tards today], she has proven time and time again to be an extremely capable, inspiring and visionary leader ... her campaign efforts have single-handedly influenced the outcome of countless senatorial, congressional and gubernatorial elections [for better or worser  ] because the American people believe in her leadership skills and trust her judgment.

I mean, gag me with a spoon some more.

Yeah, that Sarah Palin. The one who had only a 28 percent approval rating in March 2011 ... but they're "the American people," and the 60 percent with an unfavorable view of her are not.
