Seems very plausible, venality is Trump's signature dish after all. But my own guess would be that Ms Daniels, and probably many others, received her payoff from the charitable Donald J. Trump Foundation. There were mistresses to silence long before he became the presidential candidate, and Cohen probably had records of these payments, neatly stapled to copies of pregnancy tests, NDA's, etc.

Hopefully it's a felony to misdirect ring-fenced charitable funds towards such purposes, and if the transactions have been falsified in the Foundation's accounts then the trustees are also in hot water. I'm building a castle in the sky here, but Trump's downfall could end up being his petty greed...
Not to mention his satyriasis.

Trump’s allies worry that federal investigators may have seized recordings made by his attorney

President Trump’s personal attorney Michael D. Cohen sometimes taped conversations with associates, according to three people familiar with his practice, and allies of the president are worried that the recordings were seized by federal investigators in a raid of Cohen’s office and residences this week.

Cohen, who served for a decade as a lawyer at the Trump Organization and is a close confidant of Trump, was known to store the conversations using digital files and then replay them for colleagues, according to people who have interacted with him.

“We heard he had some proclivity to make tapes,” said one Trump adviser, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation. “Now we are wondering, who did he tape? Did he store those someplace where they were actually seized? . . . Did they find his recordings?” ...

It is unknown whether Cohen taped conversations between himself and Trump. But two people familiar with Cohen’s practices said he recorded both business and political conversations. One associate said Trump knew of Cohen’s practice because the attorney would often play him recordings Cohen had made of his conversations with other top Trump advisers.

“It was his standard practice to do it,” this person said.

Legal experts said Cohen’s taped conversations would be viewed by prosecutors as highly valuable.

Business Insider
Mueller has interviewed a senior FBI official who may prove pivotal in the obstruction case surrounding Trump ...

Mueller is tasked with probing Russia's interference in the 2016 US election and whether President Donald Trump's campaign colluded with Moscow to tilt the race in his favor. He is also looking into whether Trump sought to obstruct justice when he fired FBI director James Comey last May.

Boente revealed Mueller had asked to interview him in a letter to the Justice Department's senior most career attorney, Scott Schools, on January 2, according to MSNBC.

At the time, Boente was the acting head of the national security division at the DOJ. Boente said in the letter that he did not believe he was a subject or target of the investigation.

Boente may prove to be a pivotal witness in Mueller's obstruction case against Trump. The case hinges, in large part, on determining Trump's rationale behind firing Comey.

There is talk of some Act of Congress - probably a simple Resolution because that won't require a President's signature - by which Trump would be prevented from firing Mueller. The details of this proposed legislation have not yet been publicized.

I won't say it isn't possible, but the topic makes me think of The Tenure of Office Act which was used to try to impeach Andrew Johnson for removing Edwin Stanton as Sec of War. That Act was probably unconstitutional, and described as such in obiter dicta in a Supreme Court decision many years after its repeal.

I am trying to picture the entertainment value of congress passing something that would require a president's signature. Could you imagine how fuming Trump would be if it was veto proof?

Post-ABC poll: Majority of Americans support Mueller’s probe of Russia, Trump campaign

A clear majority of Americans support special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and alleged collusion with President Trump’s campaign, a new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds.

The results show backing for inquiries into Trump’s orbit on several fronts.

Nearly 7 in 10 adults say they support Mueller’s focus on possible collusion with Russia. Sixty-four percent say they want the special counsel investigating Trump’s business activities. And a 58 percent majority supports investigating alleged payments by Trump associates to silence women who say they had affairs with him.

The poll was conducted Sunday to Wednesday, with interviews overlapping the FBI’s Monday raid of the home and office of Michael D. Cohen, Trump’s longtime attorney. Agents seized communications between Cohen and Trump, as well as records related to a 2016 payment Cohen made to adult-film star Stormy Daniels, who claims to have had a sexual encounter with Trump. The Cohen inquiry was opened by the Manhattan-based U.S. attorney’s office following a referral from Mueller. ...

Walter Shaub

@waltshaub

If Rosenstein gets fired, it’ll be because a leader who thinks he’s above the law wants to shut down the investigation — an attack on the republic!
If that happens, every person who is remotely able to do so should join the marches that are spring-loaded to start upon his firing.
