How does a Mrs Sandusky or Mrs Bales accept the reality of being married to a monster? Article 32 investigation (pre trial hearing) begins today.
I've got a great deal of sympathy for both Sgt Bales and his wife. I am not - repeat not - condoning what he did. But I've had extensive conversations with someone I know who had a significant mental health issue develop while deployed. One of the things I've taken from those discussions is an understanding that people can have mental health issues that cause delusions, and that their behavior when they are suffering from those delusions can be extraordinarily abnormal for them - that they are, essentially, not the same person they usually are. If the delusions involve threats to friends, comrades, or family, and the person suffering from the delusions is well-armed and skilled at using those weapons, tragedy can very, very easily result.
Mrs. Bales is absolutely on the infamous Egyptian river. But understandably so. It's likely that what happened is totally and utterly inconsistent with the person she married.
