Somehow in the transition from PJ to Fogbow, we dropped the ball on the book club, partly because we tried to have parallel threads on two different discussion boards. But I have a lot of great books in my library that I would never have read otherwise. We have quite a number of new members now, and maybe it's time to breathe some life back into the book club.

The way it used to work:

We had about a dozen people in the club. One person was assigned to suggest three books each month, and the rest of us would vote on which one we'd read. Then we'd discuss it beginning on the 1st of the following month, and the next person would suggest three more books. One time we actually got the author to appear on a special edition of R.C. Radio (on a Sunday afternoon), and club members had a memorable two hours speaking to Sally Gunning about her book Bound. We tried to alternate fiction and non-fiction. We limited ourselves to books that you can get on a Kindle. We had a great time, and there wasn't a single book that I thought was unworthy of my time.

If those rules can be improved, tell us how. I'm always open to suggestions.

I'm in.

I didn't always get to participate in the discussions due to other commitments, but I read the books. I agree that I was exposed to books and authors I wouldn't have found alone and it was fun reading other's opinions and perspectives on the books.

Now that life has calmed down just a wee bit (and I have a Nook) I will be happy to participate. :) In fact, just read a good book that I downloaded free for my nook. I'm looking forward to further books by this author.

My not participate in the Non-Fiction much, being I read for escape, but you never know. :-k

I am the polar opposite of Jez. I prefer non-fiction. I can't promise much but I will try to participate when I can. It's been almost a year since I read a good book. The last one was The Help.

Just finished and thought it was a story long overdue in the telling:

(Oh, and I'm in, either fiction or non-fiction ...)

Edit: Also, worth mentioning and I think probably made to be read by a book club: The Immortal life of Henrietta Lacks. http://henriettalacksfoundation.org/

Yipee! I would love to participate...especially since Books on Kindle are the only kind I can get.

I agree! It has been on my list to read for ages. I actually ordered it online once, but something happened and the order got cancelled and I haven't gotten a chance to re-order.

After reading Jez and borealis's comments, I don't think we need strict adherence to the fiction/non-fiction thing. If it's your turn to pick, and you like fiction, tell us three good fiction books, even if we read fiction last month.

The other good thing about reviving the book club is, now I can make a separate page on the site, with a link at the bottom of every page on the forum (that might entice others to join as we go along, too). That will have a table showing whose pick is which month, what the three choices are for that month, etc. That way, there won't be any guessing.

One problem that cropped up last time was I'd say, "OK, it's September, so-and-so's turn to pick!" ... but so-and-so hadn't remembered whose turn was next and wouldn't have any time to think about his/her choices, because we stopped the voting at the end of the first week of the month, so there was some pressure to get the three choices up in a day or two.

Here's a sample of what I can do (but we've read all the books in the survey, and you have to register separately at the Home Page to vote).

I don't have a Kindle. Or a Nook. Or read a zillion printed PDFs. I like holding a book.

Yes, so do I. And will go out my way to find them, too. Doesn't make electronic media any less valid.

OD - Took me years to get a Nook. And even then, only after going back and forth for months about whether or not to get one.

I still love my books, and it's my preferred medium, but the Nook is quite convenient for taking something to work to read at lunch, etc. I will always have my books, but those contraptions are dang convenient.

Even if we don't participate, will the topic show up on the board so we can follow the discussion, or will it be in one of those secret corners we have to join to be included in?

I know you are right. I've just done what so many of us fear more than anything in the world -- I have become my Mother! She hated change, resisted it with a force that was immeasurable when we tried to get her to give things a try. While I was in London in July, a thriller by Karin Slaughter that I was waiting on was finally released. I bought the hardback and schlepped it back with me on the plane. I marveled that the people on both sides of me had Kindles. I'll get there, too. Maybe later that I should, but I will.

I know Foggy interviewed an author or two on RC Radio. I would offer a time slot for book discussions or author interviews any time anyone would want to tackle that.

Open and public at all times, with the hope of enticing more participants. And, as I said, a link on every page in the forum, down at the bottom near the Blogs and Other Resources links.

I'm in, and I'm open to just about anything. I used to be a voracious reader, but it dropped off over the last couple of years. Now that I finally figured out why people wear reading glasses, I'm happily reading a lot again :D

Participating in RC radio is a little hit or miss for me, but when I can I'll be happy to.

I may play from time to time, depending on the books, but consider me an associate member. I always have a stack o' books waiting to be read and said stack is stacked in the order the books are to be read. OCD thing, but mostly harmless unless someone tries to make me insert something new into the stack. Might try to cut a bitch, I dunno. It's kinda like not speaking of the spice rack. ;)

If the first book is the 8th Edition of Yeazell's Civil Procedure, the 7th Edition of Knapp, Crystal & Prince's Problems in Contract Law, the 8th Edition of Moenssens, Bacigal, Ashdown, & Hench's Criminal Law, or the 4th Edition of Dernbach et al's Legal Writing & Legal Method, I'm in. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure I'm busy.
