The RWNJ have an astonishing ability to read into this treaty provisions that elude others. However, the specific sentence about "the best interests of the child" is worth thinking about. We as a people have had to deal with parents who deemed it to be in the best interests of their child that the child not receive a blood transfusion, or not receive chemotherapy, or not go to even some sort of pretend home schooling. We have child protection services that intervene when parents are starving or abusing a child.
Much of this is perpetrated by religious nuts like Jehovah's Witnesses, who are, of course, free to die of their own stupidity but not to kill other people because of it, even their own children. It is no surprise a religious nut like Rick Santorum, whose views are so far out and extreme as to be beyond the pale, would fear the best interests of anyone outweighing his own right to be crazy.
