I have to wonder... how many Santorum Republicans will stay home this November? I hate it when things make me smile. My old face tends to crack.

Over in another thread, Kate520 brought up GOP "ratfucking"

And Santorum has gone there. Naturally, he professes ignorance.

OBAMAVILLE AD
http://thinkprogress.org/security/2012/ ... can-enemy/

Quote:
A paranoid Rick Santorum campaign ad, “Obamaville,” briefly replaces a picture of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmedinejad with President Barack Obama’s face, as the narrator talks about a “sworn American enemy”:
<snip>

After this subliminal editing was noted by Politico, the Santorum campaign professed confusion about Obama’s appearance.

“Obviously I’m not trying to say anything about Obama and Ahmadinejad,” Rick Santorum spokesman Hogan Gidley said.

<snip>
“Despite their sanctimonious protestations to the contrary,” liberal blogger Digby comments, “that quick cut in the ad that juxtaposes Ahmadinejad and Obama is a very creepy, underhanded trick.” She continued:

“The Republicans love to do this. (Recall the famous RATS ad.) But this one is especially low because it’s obviously aimed at the none-too-bright right wingers who believe that Obama is a Muslim usurper — which is just another racist dog-whistle with a little xenophobia and religious intolerance thrown in for good measure.”

.

Speculation that it was staged. Being used in a fundraising letter:

Quote:
"Quit distorting my words. It's bullsh*t," he said to a Times reporter.

In a fundraising email Monday morning, Santorum writes, "I'm Ready to Take On The New York Times":

Earlier today, while campaigning in Wisconsin, I criticized Romney and Obama for their outrageous healthcare legislation. Predictably, I was aggressively attacked by a New York Times reporter all too ready to defend the two of them, and all too ready to distort my words. Let me assure you, I didn't back down, and I didn't let him bully me. I think it is high time that conservatives find the courage to expose the liberal press for what they are, a defender and enabler of Romney's and Obama's liberal agendas.

BBC is showing profile of Mittens just now.

Quote:
This World: The Mormon Candidate
John Sweeney profiles US politician Mitt Romney, the leader in the race to become the Republican candidate in this year's presidential elections, and explores how his Mormon beliefs are likely to be received by voters across the country. Sweeney travels to Utah to examine the appeal of the world's fastest-growing religion, investigates the faith's practices, including rituals Romney is likely to have participated in, and talks to believers as well as former members of the Church

Expect it will be available via iplayer later.

Edit: Meh. Mostly Mormon bashing. Supposed first ever tv interview with Mittens cousin Park Romney.

Newt Gingrich has replaced his campaign manager and is laying off a third of his staff, but has vowed to continue his bid for the Republican presidential nomination, a spokesman confirms to CNN.

"The campaign is being redesigned to make it convention ready," spokesman R.C. Hammond said. "Speaker Gingrich is committed to going all the way to Tampa."

Didn't he do this last year too?

He has also started charging for having pictures taken with him.

Newt's ego is not allowing reality to be accepted.
Fox News.com wrote:
The staff shakeup, first reported by Politico, is designed around a “big choice convention” strategy, which the campaign says will be built around two goals: showing how Gingrich is the most capable candidate to take on the president and courting delegates in anticipation of a brokered convention.
<snipped>
This “big choice convention” strategy, of course, depends on front-runner Mitt Romney’s failure to secure enough delegates to win the nomination.
Gingrich has said anything short of 1,144 delegates will create an opening for him make his case to the party at the August convention in Tampa.
http://politics.blogs.foxnews.com/2012/ ... convention

There have been 33 elections or caucuses for available delegates to date. Gingrich has won more than anyone else on just 2 occasions (SC and GA). Newt did come within 1 delegate of the winner on 2 occasions (OK and MS). His performance everywhere else has been so abysmal that according to Real Clear Politics he leads only Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann and the pizza guy.
Rmoney.......565...55%
Santorum.....256
Gingrich......141
Paul............66
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls ... count.html
It won't happen but, if Gingrich could miraculously convince an additional 1003 delegates at a brokered convention he should be their nominee, the GOPers would make the 1968 Democratic National Convention look like a kindergarten play time.

There are 1216 delegates yet to be earned by the candidates. Sorry Newt, a "big choice convention" ain't gonna happen. I'm almost as disappointed as you are.

I think Gingrich is very pissed that his candidacy is failing so badly. He "knows" he is smarter than all the others. He is also the darling of big time conservative radio talking heads like Limbaugh and Hannity. He has run in the elite circles in Washington for years and been on the big Sunday network interview shows hundreds of times. "So :(( why aren't they crowing me as the nominee, dammit. "

Sweet Jeebus on a hot dog bun, this man is an idiot.

Quote:
Santorum claims ‘seven or eight’ University of California campuses don’t teach American history

During a campaign stop in Wisconsin on Monday, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum claimed that a number of the University of California’s ten campuses did not offer courses on American history.

“I was just reading something last night from the state of California,” he said, according to Think Progress. “And that the California universities – I think it’s seven or eight of the California system of universities don’t even teach an American history course. It’s not even available to be taught.”

“Just to tell you how bad it’s gotten in this country, where we’re trying to disconnect the American people from the roots of who we are, so they have an understanding of what America should be,” Santorum added.

He appeared to be making reference to an op-ed recently published in the Wall Street Journal by Peter Berkowitz of the National Association of Scholars, a conservative group that fights the “progressive agenda” in the lecture hall.

Also, too, Debra Saunders from the Chronicle wrote on this today. http://goo.gl/jl1hv

somebody tweeted at me when Rachel said Santorum's campaign was like the comments at a birther blog. :P

I didn't see the show yet.

Maddow: Santorum campaign like the comments on a birther blog

Quote:
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow said Monday night that it was difficult to report on Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum because he does not appear to be running a serious campaign.

On Monday, Santorum falsely claimed that “seven or eight” of the University of California’s ten campuses did not offer any American history courses. Previously, he falsely claimed that elderly people in the Netherland were terrified of being involuntarily euthanized.

“The Rick Santorum campaign is essentially being run out of the blog comments on a birther website,” Maddow said. “It is very hard to treat him or his campaign as a major political force. It is hard to treat him as a major political figure that has a shot at the presidency.”

there's more, including the video clip. Or, you can go to the whole show and watch it at msnbc.

The original source seems to be “A Crisis of Competence: The Corrupting Influence of Political Activism in the University of California”. The poorly written report quotes heavily from The American Council of Trustees and Alumni at http://www.goacta.org. It seems Santorum or someone he's reading confused this sentence:

Quote:
"on four of the nine UC campuses, a student can achieve a bachelor's degree without doing any coursework in science, mathematics, a foreign language, economics, literature, or the history and institutions of their country."

Buried in that might be legitimate topics of discussion -- are conservative voices represented or encouraged in academia (No, not a Dr. Who-shall-not-be-named discussion), is there core knowledge that every college graduate should have, etc.

But anyone who can interpret a statement that "students don't have to graduate knowing about X" as "students can't even study X" is not smart enough to be President.
