13? He was barely a teenager. I would not care if he were a follower of Baal until age 13. Of course, I don't care what his adult religion is, either, so long as he keeps it in his own heart and not in his policies. This is a story about nothing of importance. It is amazing that the author makes so much of so little.

I agree with you on all that, Tollie. It's still interesting in that any Mormon background could affect Romney's consideration of Rubio as a running mate. I think it might be seen as a minus. Even one and a quarter Mormons on the ticket might be calculated as too many.

rachel maddow did a little on this last night. It's interesting only in that there is speculation that romney will choose him as his VP. Yeah, it's weird. She interviewed the guy who wrote that book on rubio. I didn't watch that part cuz he seemed kinda boring. He might have had a lot to say, but I just couldn't watch him and had other stuff to do.

The videos are posted now.

Does Rubio have the credibility to help draw Latino votes?

this is prolly the interview one:

Thanks, Mimi, for posting those. Yes, the second one gets into it.

And the registered Republicans/teabaggers have responded by fielding a bunch of nutjobs. Their only hope is to have an open convention and find someone more in the mainstream.

I remember being appalled and saddened(yo, I was naive bck then) when I heard Bob Dole address the Rethug Convention in San Diego in '96 thusly:

"it's good to talk to REAL Americans for a change!". Wild cheering. He then went on...and on...about how Democrats were ruining the country and they had to take it back, like right now. This, when they were the ones who brung the whole stained blue dress thing up to public consciousness in the first place and made it wallpaper for our lives for an entire year.

Here's Matt Taibbi's take on the current crop of anti-Americans.

Again, I apologize for no c&p. The iPad is nearly perfect, otherwise.

I have been "concerned" that with Rubio as VP candidate, that would swing Florida and swing that state to the Repubs.

However, today I learned that Rubio was baptized as a Mormon at eight and was a Mormon until he was eleven years old when his parents left the church to return to Catholicism. Now, I could care less, but....

I don't think that Christian Fundamentalists and Evangelicals will stand for a Mormon and former Mormon to compose, respectively, the Pres and VP Republican ticket.

NO WAAAAAY!

Supposed Romney gave a major economic address and nobody came?

Quote:
Mitt Romney spoke to several empty seats Friday in Detroit, in a speech that offered Democrats more fodder for their attacks and failed to deliver the major economic address his campaign promised.

Television cameras showed rows of empty chairs as Romney rehashed many of the policies and quips he'd used in previous speeches, made a few jokes that appeared to fall flat with the audience and said that his wife, Ann, drives "a couple of Cadillacs," which will likely give Democrats more ammunition for their depiction of him as rich and out of touch.

Image

Dayum. This man has been running for president since 2007, and yet he and his team keep stumbling like this.

Quote:
His speech was held at Detroit’s massive Ford Field, which holds tens of thousands of people, but only 1,000 or so attended. The campaign and the Detroit Economic Club, which hosted the event, sought to make the stadium look more full by putting the audience in one end zone of the football field and putting the cameras directly behind them.

OK, he's not a candidate anymore but I don't know where else to put this:

Herman Cain: 'stupid people' are behind Obama job approval rating

Quote:
Former GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain thinks he knows what's behind President Barack Obama's 45 percent job approval ratings nationally.

"That's where the stupid people are," the former Godfather's Pizza CEO told a packed room during a luncheon at the California Republican Party convention in Burlingame.

Cain, who dropped out of the race in December after allegations of sexual harassment surfaced, urged attendees to stay involved and inspired in politics as they work to maintain control of the House of Representatives, win the U.S. Senate majority and "alter the occupant of the White House."

"Know your facts. Stupid people are ruining America," he said, reviving a line he has used often on the campaign trail and in public appearances.

I have to wonder what Cain thought when a customer made a suggestion on how to improve his pizza.

Santorum was on This Week this morning. He went on a long rant about how he did not believe in the separation of church and state. He kept confusing 'the state' with 'the public square,' a term he used over and over. He insisted that everyone be brought to the 'public square.'

He left the panel more or less shaking their heads in disbelief. They agreed that Santorum was very bad for the GOP as far as appealing to the indies and all but the most conservative right wing. Also, they have pushed Romney so far to the right that he will likely lose the purple states. George Will (and the others agreed) that Newt's promise of $2.50/gal. gasoline was economic nonsense.

The visual above is right on. The longer these candidates move to more and more unpopular positions such as they have on contraception, the better it will be for the Dems. 8>

But wait! From Adam Winkler, the constitutional law professor at UCLA who is a perfect demonstration that you don't have to be a liberal (or even make any sense) to be a university professor, comes the proposal for the White Knight who will come riding into the brokered GOP Convention and save them from themselves.

Clarence Thomas is a long shot, but ...

I read the whole thing and I didn't find one idea in it that wasn't ridiculous. Especially his comments about how Thomas is an "outsider" and "not partisan," and that the only thing the Democrats would have against him is a 30-year-old accusation by Anita Hill.

He must have missed Thomas' inability ot understand what financial disclosure means.

How is he going to keep gas at $2.50 a gallon???? GOVERNMENT price controls that's how....Lets pass some more laws. This is pure BS. If Newt wants to negotiate oil contracts with Venezuela and the Iranians, it could possibly happen if you can convince the Iranis to undersell the rest of the producers destroying the oil markets as we know them---And seriously pissing off the entire Arabian Peninsula.

Edit: Where is Richard M. Nixon now that we need him.

Kyle Scott, a Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science at Duke University, has a hope: Santorum will win the GOP nomination. No, not for the reasons you might think.

An Obama-Santorum matchup would be good for the country: Obama vs. Santorum is the only contest where real issues would be the focus
Quote:
Rick Santorum's message resonates with voters' hearts and minds (this week at least), because he is a true believer. He believes in his message, and his message is consistent with core Republican values. What gave Mr. Santorum the edge in Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado and Missouri can give him an edge in the general election against President Barack Obama.

Mr. Santorum speaks directly to issues that are most relevant to core Republicans. He focuses on social and cultural issues that evoke emotions, and emotions move people to vote, especially those who align themselves with a particular party. This has helped him do well in primaries and caucuses when core conservatives turn out to vote in greater numbers than independents.
...
What pushed Mr. Santorum to the front in the most recent contests — and vaulted him into a tie with Mr. Romney in at least one national poll — was his ability to stay above the bickering and negativity that took place between Mr. Romney and Newt Gingrich. Mr. Santorum is not as susceptible to personal attacks, as he seems to have a clean personal life, as far as we know. This means to attack Mr. Santorum, one must attack his policy positions. This cannot be done in the GOP nomination process because to attack Mr. Santorum's policy positions would be to attack the Republican platform.
...
An election about issues is what this country needs. It may be too much to hope for, but it is a prospect we should all get excited about. To win the GOP nomination, Mr. Santorum must find a way to keep his campaign positive and issue-focused. Not only will it help him win the nomination, but it is the right thing to do.

Is it time to play "Taps" for the Republican Party?

As I mentioned elsewhere, we went to dinner with republican friends last night. They actually do not like Romney at all -- they called him and Gingrich* both dishonest -- but they don't really hold out hope for Santorum winning the nomination. However, they both feel like Santorum says what he really means (whether folks like it is another matter).

Neither of them thought Santorum could win the election if he won the nomination. I thought that was interesting, too, particularly as I think they like a lot of his positions on social issues. Pragmatic republicans WILL vote for Romney, I think. They'll hold their nose, but they'll do it. If the republican party survives, it will be because of the pragmatic ones like our friends. I think.

It's interesting to talk to people of other political persuasions, particularly in person. I should do it more often.

*She had a lot of body language when she mentioned Gingrich being dishonest. I know he's not really in it any more, but he would lose enough of the female republican vote to matter, at least based on my friend's expression. Sample size = 1.
