I have the same cover! :-bd

You cannot download from SCRIBD on the iPad. You can only browse documents. I found the best way to read is in the portrait mode. There are hidden spots on the middle of each side to turn the page. SCRIBD is slow and doesn't put any of the pages in the cache like the iBooks and Kindle seem to do. Here are some Apps you might want to check out. If there are iPad only vs. iPad/iPhone versions get the iPad only version as it will have a better resolution. These are all free:

The Weather Channel
WUnderMap
Skype
Dragon Dictation
Go SkyWatch (Astronomy - Star Walk is even better for $5)
Fidelity Investments (if you have an account but your financial institution probably does too)
Kindle
Red Laser (I got this on my iPhone - It reads bar codes on products and compares prices)
DirecTV has an App to set your DVR if you have their service for TV

The little kid in me is screaming "I want!" but the mean 'ol adult in me is saying, "what would I use it for?"

Such a dilemma. That kid can get really pissy when he doesn't get his way.

Other apps I use:

ABC
BBC
CBC (Canuckistan)
CNN
France 24
HuffPo (I actually hate this one)
NYTimes (see my discussion above; I pay for the subscription and love it)
NPR (best free app in the universe)
PBS (second best free app in the universe)
ESPN Score Central
60 Minutes

If you use Facebook and twitter a lot, get Flipboard while it's still free.

To view Flash video (Jon Stewart), you need to purchase the Skyfire app for 5 bucks.

I've also purchased Pages for word processing, Headspace and Total Recall for brainstorming/planning ideas (mind-mapping, basically), and Goodreader for reading/annotating PDFs. I use Goodreader in conjunction with Google Docs, but many people like DropBox and other cloud concept apps.

The reviews for Skyfire are weird. Either they love it or it flat out doesn't work. Most of them say skyfire is a giant rip off. I don't understand. How can it work great for 2 people and not work at all for 10 others?

I've never had a problem, but it's not like I use it every day and it is not my default browser. I just use it here and there when I feel like catching up on Jon Stewart. If it's ever crashed, I don't remember, but I'm pretty sure it never has. Maybe those people were using it for other websites, or other Flash applications? It's only good for video.

Well, I just spent a frustrating hour going round and round trying to download a free app!

All I wanted was to check out Ducky's fish pond app.

I had to "verify" first on both computer and iPad, and give a payment method. It absolutely wouldn't complete the process with PayPal. Went round and round and round... Finally had to give it a credit card and then it got pissy 'cause I didn't fill in the salutation!

Oh and re-type my email and password over and over and over again and it would auto-correct my email to something crazy. Is there anything like the arrow keys? I had to back space the whole thing instead of just correcting the wrong parts and it would just paste the crazy in again!

I think I need a drink...

This is a bit strange. I have my iTunes account (aka my Apple ID, which is the email I used to register) set up to charge to PayPal. That works for everything -- for stuff from iTunes, from the App store, and now from the Mac App store.

I set that up in iTunes on my PC. When I go to buy something directly from App store on the iPad (or when I download a free update), I just enter my iTunes account and password and it downloads. Sometimes it asks me to verify that I'm over some age, which means click "ok" (some security, that). But that's all. I haven't ever entered any charge card info on the iPad, for anything.

Yep. Just hold your finger on the iPad screen over the text you want to copy/paste. A blue box thingie should appear that you can move/expand to copy the text you want. When you've selected your text, hit the copy box that pops up. Go to wherever you want to paste and again hold your finger on the iPad screen. A box should pop up where you can select the paste option.

Well, it got worse before it got better.

iTunes wouldn't recognize the iPad and download Dropbox, my fish pond wouldn't install, it kept nagging me to sign up with my cellphone carrier and then it kept telling me I couldn't use the device until some mobile thing got fixed. :((

In support I checked the box for call me now and the phone rand instantly! Very nice, competent support guy got it all fixed right up!

Got my fishy pond going and even upgraded. Hooked a fish but it got away. :D Kitteh is somewhat interested but mostly is curious about the sounds.

Got Dropbox set up, Kindle - there are all of my books! And Pages. iBooks is next.

Thanks everyone for all of the suggestions and advice. :xo

Have fun with your toy! For birtherism purposes, it's actually the best method ever of reading and enjoying a lengthy court transcript. (especially if you have cool PDF reading apps; my favorite is Goodreader)

I just found a useful tip. On the iPad double tap on the top of the screen in Safari top go to the top of the page instead of scrolling back up on a long page. This was driving me crazy at some sites like Doc's that don't have the handy top of the page link like TFB does.

Yep, what I don't understand is why they didn't do the same thing for the bottom of the page. (Unless I'm missing something. Someone fill me in if I am!)

So, I'm thinking about getting my wife an iPad for her birferday ... right now, she's using one of those infernal PCs with Vista, and she uses Windows Mail. Does anyone know if she'd be able to export all of her Windows Mail email messages and folders and such and import them into mail on the iPad??

T'anks ...

I discovered this accidentally one day with my fat fingers.

Migrate her to GMail, use iMap instead of POP3, and you can have everything, everywhere. My email arrives on my PC, my Mac notebook, my iPad and my iPhone, and I can also pick it up via the GMail web app. We used to run our own mail server, and a couple of years ago we migrated everything to GMail including uploading the archives. It makes everything a lot easier.

So she could upload all her messages and such to Gmail? Huh. Thanks.

She can't directly "upload" all her existing messages to GMail.

The most straightforward way I can see to get all the messages onto a GMail account would be to create a new one, then send all of her existing messages to that account. Once they're on GMail you can get them from anywhere, as ducktape points out.

Great suggestion. I've had Flipboard for a while, but had only played with it when I first got it because there wasn't much content. Wow, it really changes the way you see Facebook :D

It does! And for really good twitter authors, it similarly transforms twitter by adding in photos and large article excerpts. I have a flipboard section for things like Phoenix culture (all twitter users I've found who tweet interesting things about the city), BBC news, ASU sports tweeters, and a park ranger in Denali National Park, Alaska (where I lived for a summer) who posts random photos of the park.
