Any FB'ers have - or know someone who has - a Nook Color? Being too poor to afford an iPad and data plan, but wanting something more than a straight e-reader, the Nook seems like a good option.

The reviews online have been really positive, but it would be nice to get some feedback from someone who's used it for more than the week or so most reviewers tend to.

Thanks, techies!

Not a techy answer, but I think you also have to evaluate the stability of Barnes and Noble. This could matter on things like service and warranty. I am doubtful about its future, especially since it missed the crucial holiday season for release of the Nook.

I have one. I got it when one of my game members told me that she had one, and that "some" of my games worked on it. I dashed down to Barnes and Noble ...

... and it turns out, all my games work on it. Web-kit rules. It's actually quite a nice little tablet -- more than just an e-reader and less than an iPad, but that said, it does a pretty good job.

I would have more confidence if it were backed by some company other than a bookseller with financial problems, but having had platforms that were abandoned by a lot of larger CE companies (I'm looking at you, Sony and Philips), I'm not letting that hold me back.

It has a nice and responsive screen, pinch-to-zoom, a pop-up virtual keyboard, automatic orientation -- a lot of stuff that the iPad has. I think you'd like it, and I'm reading TFB on it now.

I've got a Nook color which I love, but it is even better if you "root" it to open it up to more android based aopplications.

Rooting is a bit technical but there are step by step instructions on the web. I'm not a full blown techie but I found it quite easy.

How's the Nook Color's battery life?

Thanks for the feedback! A new generation Nook Color was just released this week and seems to have more apps and moves it closer to the iPad in functionality - and at no extra charge!

I'm thinkin' belated Easter or early birthday present... ;;)

Actually, I believe that it's an OS/firmware upgrade, and all of us Nookies should get it next week (you can force it this week, but I'll wait).

I find it good - certainly lasts a transatlantic flight and then some.

I am liking my iPad more and more as I get used to it.

So cool to wake up and have the Lyin' Palin book already on it this am. :D

Now what to do with the Kindle? It's just sitting here. It is a couple of years old, so not hot.

Any suggestions on the best place/person to give it to? :-k

Edit: It is better for reading books that have been converted to pdf than the computer is! iBooks keeps track of where you were so you don't have to! Just. Too. Cool.

If I had a Kindle, I would leave it on the same account and give it to my mom. That way, we could both read the same books.

Donate it to a church or women's shelter.

Thought about that, but most of the stuff people want to read costs $. I have the Feedbooks guide with it's thousands of free classics on it.

I'll bet there are hospitals, or hospital-related charities, that could put it to good use. And wasn't there recent news about the fact that you can now download local library books into kindles, for free?

I'm thinking about the Motorola Xoom. I like the specs on it and I've played with it in staples and verizon stores just to get the feel for it. Interface feels pretty smooth. Also they just released an update to the honeycomb os. Right now my home computer resides in my living room as it is attached to the TV and serves as a home entertainment hub. Rather than having to move the computer I think it would be easier to have a tablet for the bedroom that I can double as a photoframe when I'm not using it.

I haven't become very interested in the competition yet, mainly because of the difference in apps available for the iPad versus other tablets. That's a huge factor for me. Last I checked, iPads still had more apps versus the others by a factor of something ridiculous like 5. (i.e., if Xooms have 50,000 apps available, iPads have 250,000.)

Really how many different apps do you think you use on a normal basis? Even on my cell I only use a few apps regularly for instance my photoframe widget I keep that on my phone as a standard (yes I'm sappy its pictures of my wife on rotation). Facebook app, music app, day in history app, weather app, xbox live app, mms messaging app (I hate the standard android messaging app I use Handcent), contapps (alternative contacts management, hate the standard too), browser, trillian for instant messaging, foursquare, gmail, Onion News, Slacker, Youtube and Shazam.

Those are the main apps I use. Sometimes I'd play games but a lot of apps out there are redundant and for what I use my phone for is the same with the tablet. Also android has the flash 10.2 support so I will have no problem accessing any webpages. built in dual cameras for video chatting dual core processor. So for what I plan to use it for I never was confortable with the Ipad. Android has always been more customizable for me and not as restrictive. Besides I also want to be able to access my movies and videos through my network on my tablet.

I use way more apps on the ipad than I do, or ever would, on my phone. In addition, it's not just the sheer number of apps available, but also how frequently new and innovative ones are coming on-line that matters to me. The work-related apps I have currently include:

The entire Arizona code (all statutes etc)
US Constitution
Pages (word processor)
Headspace (a cool brainstorming app I use for everything from digesting a new case I'm handling, to organizing a depo strategy)
Goodreader (the best way for me to review large sets of documents)
Calendars

I use newspaper-like apps heavily too. Some of them are beautifully designed and have resulted in my reading periodicals far more often than I ever did before, dating back to pre-Internet days. These include The New Yorker, The New York Times, my local Phoenix paper, two local tv news stations, BBC, CBC, France 24, PBS, the Daily Show (brand new ipad app), Slate, 60 Minutes, and many others.

Seems like a lot of stuff that is pretty standard I've found. I know I have a law app on mine just for the heck of it. Yes there's a brainstorming app like that I think its called Thinking Space or something.

I just dont think I'm ever going to go for an idevice. I like customizeability and open platforms.

Ipad 1 is way too heavy. Better as a flying saucer-like weapon.

I see... I guess the only important question left is how it handles porn
