Thank goodness for TFB. Otherwise I would be seriously depressed right now.

Re: Trumps tariff threat
Amongst the things that Trump does not understand is that in today's world it is impossible to manufacture most things more complicated than an apple pie without using components from many different countries.
An example. Right now here on the Gulf Coast billions of dollars are being spent to expand existing polymers plants. A key piece of equipment used in all of these new production lines can only be obtained from a single manufacturer in Germany. That company has no competitors nor will it have any because the market is too small to support more than one supplier. Other necessary components can only be sourced in Asia. The people with the expertise needed to design and build these plants are few in number and scattered about the globe. Engineering firms from three or four continents therefore are working on all these projects. When the plants are finished their products will be shipped worldwide. (That BMW plant in Mexico will most likely get its plastic components and tires from the USA.)
If you take a flashlight and magnifying glass and look under your American car's hood you might be amazed at how many different counties are the source of the car parts.
Guess who makes the cars with the highest proportion of US made content-
2016 Production-Based Index (2016 AMI Rank)
1. Honda Accord (2)
2. Toyota Camry (1)
3. Toyota Sienna (3)
4. Honda Odyssey (4)
5. Honda Pilot (5)
6. Chevrolet Traverse (6)
7. GMC Acadia (7)
8. Buick Enclave (8)

If you want a car with the highest possible US-made content you have to buy a Honda or a Toyota. Even then the Honda Accord is only 80% US made. By comparison most Ford cars are about 65% US made. There are no 100% US made cars anymore.
The world is no longer a simple place.

Product design, supply chain, and manufacturing are but three of the things Trump has no clue about.Volkonski wrote:The world is no longer a simple place.

Re: Trumps tariff threat
He also doesn't realize (or maybe he doesn't care) that, by raising the price of imported cars by 35 percent, he will be raising the price of domestic cars by 15-20 percent. When the competition is forced to raise their prices, GM, Ford and Chrysler will raise theirs to be just below the competition.Volkonski wrote:Trump does not consider that if he starts raising tariffs then our trading partners likely will respond in kind thus harming US exporters.
That is what happened when Reagan convinced the Japanese automakers to limit their imports. Since the Japanese were voluntarily selling fewer cars in the US, they sent the top-of-the-line models with the biggest profit margins. Domestic automakers raised prices to match.
So, a 35 percent, or any significant tarrif, on imported goods will almost automatically raise the prices of domestic goods, to the detriment of the working class buyers. It could also trigger a return to the inflation rates of the late seventies and early eighties.

There is no need for tariffs. After a few more of his tweets, Trump will drive the Dollar down and BMW's will cost a lot more.
And domestics products will go up too.
