Strangeness surrounds North Korea

NPR May 31, 2012 General Says He Was 'Accurately Quoted' But Misspoke On North Korea

Speaking at some sort of conference in Florida, Brig. Gen. Neil Tolley is reported to have said that the U.S. is parachuting Special Forces into North Korea. Their main purpose is surveillance of the extensive tunnel system that North Korea is thought to have built, including tunnels under the DMZ. Now he says that, although he was speaking in the present tense, he was actually laying out a possible scenario.

The source article, which appeared in The Diplomat, a Japan-based publication, has now been taken down. However, the author, David Axe, has reposted it on another Web site, War Is Boring.

The article includes some fairly outlandish statements about the technology being used by these Special Forces:
Quote:
Tolley outlined new equipment he said would boost the spies’ capabilities without giving them away to North Korean troops. For starters, he said his men could use a lightweight sensor able to “characterize what’s in a facility from standoff distance.” In addition, the commandos would benefit from a High Frequency radio whose signal cannot be tracked back to its origin. Finally — and most dramatically — Tolley said a wireless power transmission system would allow his troops to jump into North Korea without heavy loads of batteries for their radios and other gear.

It is impossible for me imagine that a Brigadier General would have ever released such sensitive information to a conference were it true. Nor do I think that a wireless power transmission facility exists, despite what Tesla claimed over a century ago.

That would be interesting. It has just enough truth to it that North Korea might take it to be a true report: there are tunnels all over North Korea, dating back to the Korean War when much of North Korea went underground. There are said to be industrial plants that are underground.

One Free Korea has doubts. Really? A U.S. General Said Our Special Forces 'Have Been Parachuting into North Korea? (Update: No, Not Really)
Quote:
But can this really be true? First, given the way gravity works — yes, even in North Korea — how would these guys get back out again? Jet packs? Second, this would be an act of war, and haven’t we sort of reserved that as North Korea’s exclusive privilege since 1953? Third, assuming that this is true, why would a serving general officer would say it in a room full of people — any room full of any people — thus increasing the risk of compromise and capture? Fourth, even if it is true, why would we hand the North Koreans a propaganda gift like this? Fifth, North Korea’s underground airfields aren’t necessarily invisible to our satellites, which makes the story’s premise questionable.

The report seemed so suspicious to me that I went back to the original source to see if there was more context for the quotation. Although it does name BG Tolley as its original source, it doesn’t claim that Tolley actually said this on the record or in the presence of the reporter, David Axe; instead, it says that Tolley told this to “a conference in Florida.” We don’t know what conference, where, or who was present, which means that this could be third-hand information (and thus, a misunderstanding, or outright disinformation). Nor does it say when these missions occurred.

Within the next few days, we can expect to see an official denial, but a story like this one can’t be untold. No matter how implausible it all sounds, there are just too many people who would never believe a denial. I haven’t decided whether I’m one of those people, but given how little our government does about the things it knows damn well North Korea is doing, you have to wonder why we’d take such profound risks to gather yet more intelligence to not act on.

UPDATE: David Axe seems to acknowledge that he misunderstood BG Tolley. Interesting that AFP, whose story has already circulated globally, quotes the Army’s denial but fails to note that Axe, the original source, now doubts what he wrote, and that it also appears to have misquoted the National Defense Industrial Association journal. [Axe has since retracted this retraction.] I don’t think Axe made this up intentionally, but it’s a case study in how sloppy and false reporting gets around the world before the truth catches up. Why were so many papers so quick to believe this before asking obvious questions and going back to reread the original source?

Five more updates follow. One concerns how North Korea will use this story for domestic propaganda.

Kim Jong Il continues to croak as the military hierarchy that he established is disassembled by Kim Jong Un, who has put himself in the position of head of the military and discarded his former mentor for reasons of ill health. The Guardian July 17, 2012 North Korean military chief is removed in possible sign of power struggle. This led to the military's dancing in Kim il-Sung Square in Pyongyang in celebration of Kim Jong Un having taken the reins.

Noting this change, Lame Cherry has a Plan and offers to be Ambassador at Large to North Korea to implement this Plan. It involves
  • The Robert Rodale gardening principles for Organic Farming
  • ...stockade panels of horse design, in order to keep Korean chickens from predators and Korean goats from eating the Korean gardens
  • a Garden in every plot and a goat in every spot
  • an apple tree in every yard
  • the Israeli greenhouse culture...for a 10-month harvest season

Most importantly, since
Quote:
The Kim family has always had a good intention policy toward Protestants in allowing their work and Faith in God to be operational in North Korea.
...
I advocate Churches to be built as Christians are good Citizens in obeying laws and not attempting to overthrow regimes. They are of God and Kim is of communism. The Christianization of North Korea would create a peaceful and nourished people, strong and independent.

In the meantime, Kim Jong Un is looking at things

I'm sure he's looking at his hot apparent wife too! She is quite the elegant cutie pie. And to be serious, it is interesting that she accompanies him in public and is frequently photographed. This is a marked departure from the style of his father. There are a lot of interesting things about this young dictator. I don't want to convince myself that any of his differences from his father are significant enough to deliberately steer North Korea toward democratization. But he is very interesting to observe.

Now we know what Kim Jong Un will be Looking At come November: Red Dawn, a remake of the 1984 movie about a joint Cuban-Soviet invasion of the U.S. This time North Korea invades the West Coast, and only teenagers can fight back. In the original remake, it was China, but the film's makers realized that they wanted to attract theater-goers in the world's largest film market. So North Korea got picked. Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson star, perhaps to their great embarrassment.

The film's makers (MGM) have had financial troubles, but this film may just solve that problem. That depends on how many explosions there are. Too few, and MGM will be back in big trouble. So far, we know of only four atomic bombs launched by North Korea.

Not the real trailer for the monumental film:

The premise is too ludicrous even to suspend belief. This may be the worst idea for a remake in history, assuming the story is not some kind of practical joke, because I find it difficult to believe anyone with a functioning brain would greenlight such a moronic idea.

That's what Wired said on August 4. North Korea Invades America in Dumbest Movie Ever

Some fans are objecting to the switch from a Chinese invasion, which they find much more credible (remember all those Chinese troops massed along the Mexican border and maybe the 10,000 in ships at anchor off San Diego).

They are faking everyone out to build expectations. The new film is actually a remake of a much better film.

The premise of the original was just as ludicrous. Someone greenlighted that one.

Until a couple of days ago, the motive for North Korea invading the U.S. was unclear. It has to do with this boo-boo:

I spent a good portion of my weekend reading about this fat little man, after stumbling on his story through Google. A Spanish citizen, he appears to be a harmless computer nerd, because that is literally what he is. But he is also a hysterically brainwashed North Korean propagandist, who has substituted North Korean culture for what should be a girlfriend or wife, so far as I can tell. He has become so deeply seduced by communist doctrine and Pyongyang imagery, that he has achieved quasi-official status within the North Korean government.

If you don't want to hunt him down so you can punch him in the face yet, you will if you watch this quite incredible eight-part documentary that is posted on YouTube (here's part 1, you may not literally want to punch him until you reach part 7):

Poutine, you weren't kidding, although he made me angry and sad from the start. Although the guy who answered "I don't know" to the question about what the North Korean government did to dissidents also made my blood boil.

That documentary was a very surreal experience. The emaciated people brought out into the streets to blindly cheer on the propaganda stunts... The whole Potemkin Village feeling that never goes away.

Thanks for sharing. If I needed yet another reason to be the virulent anti-communist that I am, I have it.

North Korea may soon launch a Unha missile from its Sohae Satellite Launching Station. The regime claims that this will be an attempt to launch an earth-observation satellite. Others suspect that it will be a test of an ICBM. Pyongyang may delay the launch if the U.S. enters into negotiations.

Japan has three Aegis-equipped destroyers on patrol in the sea of Japan, along with advanced Patriot batteries in Tokyo, Okinawa, and coastal locations facing the Korean peninsula. One Patriot unit is deployed in the governmental center of Tokyo. The U.S. also has warships in the area.

Edit: ETA:
Quote:
The United States is shifting four warships into position to track and possibly defend against a planned North Korean rocket launch, while urging Pyongyang to cancel its second such attempt this year, officials told NBC News.

The Aegis guided-missile cruiser Shiloh and three guided-missile destroyers John S. McCain, Benfold and Fitzgerald will be put in place as a "prudent precaution," officials told NBC News.

As further evidence of the enormous progress being made in North Korea under Kim Jong Un, a project that was commissioned by his grandfather and that began 24 years ago under his father is nearing completion: the world's ugliest hotel. The hotel has been sheathed in glass by its Egyptian investors, better to reflect sunlight from a coal black surface. In the 1990s, the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Korea inspected the hotel and declared that it could not be repaired. Questions were raised about the quality of concrete used in the building and the somewhat twisted elevator shafts.

The people of North Korea continue to starve as this tyrant spends the little wealth the country has on such vainglorious projects.

North Korea launched its missile over Okinawa. No damage is reported and no counter-action was taken. Their chances for the U.S. to honor the February food supply agreement have fallen further.
