Every year The Edge asks a question and gets various people from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds to give their take on the question. This year's question is:

2013: What SHOULD we be worried about.

I don't worry because...

98% of the things people worry about they can't do anything about and the other 2 percent is never going to happen.

In two days they're going to put a biopsy needle into my throat, down into my thyroid more than once and extract cells. I am afraid of pain, discomfort, shaky hands, that I might cough or something. Oh yeah. And I'm going to die. Maybe not Thursday but someday and not long enough from now.

Hows that? :-?

We should be worried that tomorrow I am going to slaughter the makers of the homework software system I use for classes.

If I log on after 9pm eastern, y'all know that I haven't been arrested for murder.

Pluto, my mantra for medical adventure is this:

Quiet mind
Open heart
Relaxed being

Say it slowly, with plenty of space in between. Quiet mind is something like a starry sky, keeps the thoughts from crowding in. Open heart makes you willing; relaxed being keeps you safe from freaquing out.

Practice it some beforehand.

Thanks, Kate. I'm going to start working on that now.

Thanks, you guys. I'm going to try to sleep now. I'm a big baby on this stuff.

Don't forget to breathe. It is pretty common for people to hold their breath during a short procedure for which they are awake. While breathing consciously, concentrate upon your breath. That gets you to the border of mindfulness meditation.

My Mom just went through all that. If she can handle it, it should be easy peasy for you. Good luck and be sure to have some icecream on hand for afterwards, it really does help.

Kate, this is probably one of the best pieces of helpful advice I have ever seen. Not just for "medical adventures" but for any anxiety-saturated situation. I am in a particularly peaceful place in my life for the time being, but I will do this for Pluto and send it across the big life soup to him!

Ah, yes...breathing, ativan and ice cream all seem like wonderful additions to finding some calm as well. :D

The combination is one of the best triple therapies to treat "Doctor's Office" I can think of....

Alprazolam (Xanax). Thanks, everybody. Anything else the greater "We" should be afraid of (beyond fear itself)?

People always say "I imagined the worst" and other nonsense. That just tells me they don't have much imagination. Take what you imagined, and add zombies. Instantly worse!
