Jim Arness has passed.

So has Jack Kervorkian.

The greatest (x) father-in-law and grandpa that ever lived just passed away.
His name was Irv, and I loved him with all my heart.
And now my heart is broken,.

I am so sorry. It sounds like he lead a great life. I hope his end was peaceful for him, and that his grandchildren will always have fond memories of him.

He knew that you loved him, and knowing that helped to make him the greatest father-in-law and grandpa. The odd thing is that love is something we can give and give again, and we have more of it to give as we give more away.

I agree, RC. He had fans of all ages. My 96 year old Grammy in-law and my 12 yr old son had that in common.

Oh. That is a pity. I loved Columbo and he was wonderful as the grandpa in The Princess Bride

I'm saddened to hear this. My Peter Falk favorite was "The Great Race". I thought he was the perfect choice as Professor Fate's assistant, Max.

I am picking It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. Peter Falk didn't play a big part but that was one damn funny movie.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the passengers on Friday's Westbound California Zephyr (Amtrak), one of the most beautiful train routes in the world. Reports on fatalities have varied since a truck smashed into the train on Friday, but it looks like they've confirmed 5 dead. From the pictures, the two gutted cars were coach cars so it could be many more. Coach class on that route has both lower level and upper level seats. Lower would be tough to get out of quickly as there's only one narrow steep staircase up, but would normally have fewer passengers. Exit would be out the windows.

I've been on that route at least 6 times (in sleeper cars). It's normally a wonderful experience. The train passes through some mighty forbidding but gorgeous landscapes. This crash happened in the 40 Mile Dessert (the deadliest part of the California Trail) near Fallon, NV, population about 7500 and Fallon Naval Air Station, population 3000. Imagine you live in such a remote area and are suddenly inundated with some 200 traumatized people who have never heard of your town but need medical help, phone service (very spotty in that area), in some cases clothing and food, a place to gather, and much more. Local reports say everyone in the town and air station pitched in to help. The best of small town America, thrust suddenly into action.

I've also been to Minot ND for half an hour, on the Empire Builder train. "Why not Minot" is their motto. Amtrak serves many small remote places.

My husband has worked in Minot in the past. He says Minot residents are really nice, down-to-Earth people. I cannot fathom my home and town being under that much water. Sad.
