Mr. Shelby makes one heck of a good quick chili mix. He will be missed. :D

Edit: can't spell this week

I had not realized that Mr. Shelby stopped racing in 1960. Road and Track May 11, 2012 Remembering Carroll Shelby: 1923–2012 - Special Report
Quote:
His last race was in October 1960, at Laguna Seca in a Birdcage Maserati, where he wrapped up the 1960 USAC Sports Car Championship. Shelby drove most of that season with a nitroglycerin tablet under his tongue, while suffering chest pains from angina pectoris, insufficient blood supply to the heart.

He had a heart transplant in 1990. He suffered kidney problems from the medication prescribed for his heart (anti-rejection medication?) and had to have a kidney transplant a few years later. His son donated a kidney.

He returned to his home, East Texas, to a ranch on which he raised miniature horses. The nearest "town" was Pittsburg (no "h"), to which he donated a building to house the local historical museum. He continued to collaborate on the design of fast cars.

Quote:
"It was fun to blow off a Porsche with a $3900 donkey [the 1965 Shelby GT350 Mustang]."

Slighly spooky. I'd never even heard of Carroll Shelby ( I'm not much of a petrolhead) until the day before he died. A replica of an AC Cobra passed me on I 66 and when I got home I googled the history of the Cobra and there he was.

There's some irony that he went farther with a few add-on parts.

RIP Mitchell Guist - He and his brother were a matched set, entertaining to watch, imagine their lifestyle. I hope Glenn pulls through alright.

Mitchell Guist co-starred with his brother Glenn in History Channel's 'Swamp People.'

What a shame. He was only 29.

[Sorry, just kidding. Couldn't resist it. Poor taste, etc.]

Somehow, I think he'd be laughing at that, Piffle. 8-)

For Mitchell, it was just that I think he'd see the humor in Piffle's words. I think the Shelby RIP going on here at same time may be adding to confusion.

Quote:
Carlos Fuentes, Latin American literary giant, dies in Mexico

MEXICO CITY -- The prize-winning writer Carlos Fuentes, modern Mexico’s greatest novelist and indefatigable author of screenplays, stories and often-scolding commentaries, died Tuesday at a hospital in Mexico City. He was 83.

The national culture council announced Fuentes' death. Although it did not immediately specify a cause, some Mexican news reports said he had checked in a night earlier with heart problems. But the prolific Fuentes, who said he had begun a new novel on the heels of another recently completed one, was not publicly known to be ailing. ...

Fuentes, who also served as a Mexican diplomat, gained wide acclaim for novels such as "Aura" and "The Death of Artemio Cruz," part of a generation of world-class writers from Latin America. U.S. movie audiences may recall the film based on the Fuentes novel "The Old Gringo," which starred Gregory Peck and Jane Fonda.

He won numerous literary prizes and was perennially mentioned as a possible candidate for the Nobel Prize in literature, but never won it.

I was in basic training for the WRNS when SNF was the box office blockbuster. Our house Petty Officer would boogie to the shower dressed only in a towel and carrying a boom box blasting out the soundtrack to SNF. It is an iconic moment for me. The sound track of SNF will be forever burned in my memory. I will remember it on my deathbed. I seriously am sad at the loss of this icon, if only for me. This defined a moment in my life.

I just turned 21, was in college, and liked to disco. Nuff said.
That year will be burned in my memory too or what's left of it. \:D/

I liked that time because you could get the guys to get up and do the Hustle. It was easy to learn and non-contact for the shy boys.
