Quote:
Louisiana is embarking on the nation's boldest experiment in privatizing public education, with the state preparing to shift tens of millions in tax dollars out of the public schools to pay private industry, businesses owners and church pastors to educate children.

Starting this fall, thousands of poor and middle-class kids will get vouchers covering the full cost of tuition at more than 120 private schools across Louisiana, including small, Bible-based church schools.

The following year, students of any income will be eligible for mini-vouchers that they can use to pay a range of private-sector vendors for classes and apprenticeships not offered in traditional public schools. The money can go to industry trade groups, businesses, online schools and tutors, among others.

Every time a student receives a voucher of either type, his local public school will lose a chunk of state funding.

Wow, can't see any way this could possibly go wrong at all. I mean, no fiscal oversight and no state testing standards.... it's gotta be a win-win for all! :-bd

It's already going terribly wrong in Ohio, at least from the charter school perspective.

Private schools have gotten certain kinds of federal funding for decades, especially under the original Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965*. I think these are usually in the form of grants for specific purposes like gifted programs, remedial reading, bilingual. Other funding and services is provided by state and local law, for example kids in River City who go to Catholic school ride on a City school district bus. Vouchers for students in private schools is a bonehead idea by the righties who hate public education to try bankrupt public school systems.

* How the hell did one of Pres Johnson's cornerstone pieces of legislation in the War on Poverty get bastardized into No Child Left Behind? :((

I dont have numbers, but know from personal experience that many charter schools have issues with finances, test results and teachers with lower credential levels. But, when you decide tonopen up your education system to the lowest bidder....

I wouldn't have a problem with vouchers if the private schools had to take all kinds of kids, but they don't.

They don't take kids with anything but minor physical disabilities, learning disabilities or behavioral problems.

I know families where the "normal" kids go to private religious school and the disabled siblings, some who need an individual classroom aide, some who need a nurse and all who need very small classes and a lot of individual attention - go to public school.

agree. many private schools also dump children if their scores fall below their standard. I had a friend who son was tossed out of his private elementary school ($15k a year) because his GPA dipped below 3.0 for too many semesters (i think it was 2). it easy to keep you stats up if you don't let in most students and kick out those who are bringing them down.
