Can't pull up the Bill itself yet it's short description is

Quote:
Candidates for public office having a minimum age requirement, required to provide certified copy of birth certificate

The fullest news report I've seen is at

http://www.gadsdentimes.com/article/20110422/NEWS/110429923/-1/news02?Title=DANA-BEYERLE-Have-senators-offered-birther-bill-

Quote:
Thirteen Alabama senators have sponsored a bill requiring presentation of a valid birth certificate in order to qualify for elected state and federal political offices that have minimum age requirements, including the presidency.

The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Slade Blackwell, R-Mountain Brook, said the bill isn’t a “birther bill” aimed at President Barack Obama, whom so-called birthers doubt is a natural born U.S. citizen and therefore isn’t qualified to be president.

“This bill is for anyone who is running for office where you have to be qualified with a minimum age,” Blackwell said. “We need to verify everybody’s age.”

...

Sen. Bobby Singleton, D-Greensboro, said the bill is a “birther bill” pure and simple. “Republicans are trying to follow the lead from other states about what is popular,” said Singleton.

...

Doesn't sound very exciting but maybe I'm getting jaded!

Alabama's online system (charmingly called ALISON) is playing up on this bill but there's a copy via:

http://e-lobbyist.com/gaits/AL/SB401

Quote:
Section 1. (a) Any person who seeks election and/or
seeks ballot access for any election to any public office that
has an age requirement for election to that office shall
provide a certified copy of his or her birth certificate that
includes the date and place of birth when the person qualifies
for election to that office.
...
Section 2. The political party or other official
receiving the qualifying papers shall forward copies of the
certified birth certificates to the Secretary of State for
proof of legal ballot access. The Secretary of State shall
hold the copies of the birth certificates until the official
results are certified, or until any legal challenge to a
certification is disposed of, following which time they shall
be destroyed.

Not a lot that I can see - although it needs to clarify what will be expected from those born overseas and what it's going to do about those that didn't get a BC.

While checking I realised today that this bill did actually get out of committee earlier this month- Alabama's website is not the clearest. I'd thought it was languishing in committee.

No matter, it's not had a 3rd reading yet , would have to go through the whole process in the House and there are 4 legislative days left.

Maybe Orly can give this bill a shot in the head arm by endorsing it and urging her clackies to hound pester contact Alabama legislators.

Well of course you need to verify everyone's age, Slade. And you'd be one of those dudes in favor of smaller government...fewer burdensome regulations...less wasteful paperwork...common sense solutions. Am I right?

Besides, I'll bet this'll fix a really serious ongoing problem. Fer instance, in the 150+ years since the Recent Unpleasantness, how many underage darkies chilluns have been illegally elected to office in Alabama? A brace? A passel? A couple of dozen maybe?

Just one? Really?

Since many elected offices have residency requirements, shouldn't Alabama demand proof of this also? Why would this bill only require a birth certificate? But it's not a Birfer bill, no sir!

Kansas Republicans have been in some headlines recently. The Topeka City Council v Shawnee County District Attorney's office (the city repealed domestic violence municipal ordinances), former Kansas Attorney General Phil Kline (possible law license suspension because of abuses against Planned Parenthood and the late Dr George Tiller) and now Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach.
Quote:
Kobach, a Republican elected secretary of state last year, has been a national leader in writing tough anti-illegal immigration laws in various states and cities.

He helped write the controversial SB 1070 in Arizona and, more recently, the law cracking down on illegal immigration in Alabama.

http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2011/oct/1 ... kobachs-l/
I'm not surprised about Kobach's views. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Congress before being elected Secy of State. He's made his opinions well known around here.

House Democratic Leader Paul Davis of Lawrence says Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a Republican, needs to focus on his job and not his “personal crusade” against illegal immigration.
<<snipped>>
Davis said the recent fine levied by state ethics officials against Kobach’s campaign for campaign finance reporting violations showed that Kobach “is spending too much time traveling around the country on a personal crusade and not enough time doing the job the people of Kansas elected — and pay — him to do.”

Last week, Kobach’s campaign was fined the maximum amount of $5,000 for failing to report accurately nearly $80,000 in contributions and expenses in Kobach’s successful 2010 campaign for secretary of state.
<<sniped>>
Kobach has co-authored the most controversial of those laws in the nation, including those in Arizona and Alabama, and is in frequent legal battles over the issue of illegal immigration.

http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2011/oct/3 ... uld-focus/

The chief election official for the state of Kansas receives the maximum fine allowed for campaign violations while he is busy helping state legislators from other states with his “personal crusade”. Maybe Kansans will be lucky in 2 years and Kobach will follow Phil Kline to Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA (founded by Jerry Falwell).
